Nobody's Fool
Nobody's Fool | Harlan Coben
4 posts | 6 read | 2 to read
A year after the devastating events that took place in Fool Me Once, Harlan Coben’s bestselling thriller and #1 Netflix series, a secret from former Detective Sami Kierce's college days comes back to haunt him. Present day is hard enough for the disgraced Kierce, but his past isn’t through with him yet… Sami Kierce, a young college grad backpacking in Spain with friends, wakes up one morning, covered in blood. There’s a knife in his hand. Beside him, the body of his girlfriend. Anna. Dead. He doesn’t know what happened. His screams drown out his thoughts—and then he runs. Twenty-two years later, Kierce, now a private investigator, is a new father who’s working off his debts by doing low level surveillance jobs and teaching wannabe sleuths at a night school in New York City. One evening, he recognizes a familiar face at the back of the classroom. Anna. It’s unmistakably her. As soon as Kierce makes eye contact with her, she bolts. For Kierce there is no choice. He knows he must find this woman and solve the impossible mystery that has haunted his every waking moment since that terrible day. His investigation will bring him face-to-face with his past—and prove, after all this time, he’s nobody’s fool.

Harlan Coben writes good mysteries and I think I‘ve read them all. This one kept me guessing til the end, what happened to wealthy Victoria Belmont on that fateful New Year‘s Eve and why did she disappear for eleven years. Sometimes you just feel like a good mystery told with humor and this book does exactly that. I particularly liked the narrator‘s class that he teaches to would-be detectives, No Shit Sherlock.

BarbaraBB I haven‘t read him while I am always in search of good thrillers. Any suggestions which one to start with? 5d
Lesliereadsalot Try any of them, they‘re all stand alone. I like them but never remember the plots or even the outcomes! BTW, Saltwater was my favorite thriller this year. @BarbaraBB (edited) 4d
BarbaraBB Thanks, I already stacked that one after your review! And I will try this author too! 4d

Lesliereadsalot Also, I went ahead and subscribed to Europa Editions newsletter to see what their new books will be. I noticed two: A Good Life by Virginie Grimaldi and The Cafe With No Name by Robert Seethaler. Heard back from lots of readers who are excited about #EuropaCollective! This will be fun! 🩷 @BarbaraBB 4d
BarbaraBB Great! Will we let all participants nominate two or three books and the others can vote, like @jlhammar did before us? 4d
Lesliereadsalot I was thinking you and I could suggest three books with descriptions and have everyone vote for one. What do you think of that less hassle idea? @BarbaraBB 4d
Tamra @Lesliereadsalot I adore Seethaler‘s writing and have Cafe With No Name waiting on my shelf! 2d

I went back & reread Fool Me Once before reading this. I was surprised when I heard it was another book featuring the detective from Fool Me. I didn‘t think he was a big enough character to bring back.
The story was classic Coben with the twists, both believable and out there. As usual, I enjoyed it but found myself asking for Coben to write another Myron & Win book.

Coben‘s books are always quick reads & have interesting narrators. I had read Fool Me Once years ago but watched the Netflix adaptation of it a couple months ago, so I remembered most of it thankfully. I was a little let down with the twist at the end, I thought it could‘ve gone somewhere more original & innovative but it was still very enjoyable. If you‘ve read his books & Fool Me Once then I definitely recommend this one!
