Method of Revenge: A Spencer & Reid Mystery
Method of Revenge: A Spencer & Reid Mystery | Cara Devlin
1 post | 1 read
Murder never shocks Leonora Spencer. Violence is a fact of life in Victorian London, and most of the corpses Leo attends to inside her uncle's city morgue are its victims. But when she witnesses a woman's death at a popular night club, and then follows a suspicious hooded figure retreating from the scene, Leo lands herself in the center of another complex Scotland Yard investigation-right where Detective Inspector Jasper Reid doesn't want her. In the several weeks since the unconventional Leo Spencer helped him solve an explosive case, Jasper has kept the willful morgue assistant at arm's length. Now, the bride of one of the city's most dangerous crime lords has been poisoned, and his primary witness is the very woman he's been trying to avoid-if only because she is as fascinating as she is irritating. Disregarding strict warnings to stay out of it, Leo insists on helping Jasper sort through his inquiry. When a death portrait of two mysterious children is found in the victim's handbag, and an unsolved Jane Doe case that haunts Jasper resurfaces, he and Leo begin to question if more than one crime-and killer-is at play. But discovering the truth might also mean walking into a carefully laid trap. Method of Revenge is the second book in Cara Devlin's new romantic historical mystery series set in Victorian London. The Spencer & Reid Mysteries are perfect for fans of PBS Masterpiece Mystery's Miss Scarlet & the Duke, and readers of Irina Shapiro, Andrea Penrose, and C.S. Harris.

This was such a GREAT second dive into the new Spencer & Reid historical mystery series! While the initial book felt a little slow at times, I know that it takes a while to get a series established with character development/backgrounds, the feel of locations, etc. But with the ending of this one, I feel like I‘ve been wholeheartedly immersed in Leo and Jasper‘s world, and they feel like fully developed and well-rounded characters now. 🔻

robinb This outing finds Leo and Jasper a few weeks out from the original book following the devastating loss of Jasper‘s father and Leo‘s dear friend. As they begin pondering how their relationship will proceed following his death, Leo is witness to a death at a gangster‘s nightclub which reunites the two as witness and detective inspector. But Leo, per usual, is not satisfied with just providing post-mortem details (as her uncle‘s morgue assistant) 🔻 5d
robinb as well as her eyewitness account, she inserts herself into the investigation and disregards Jasper‘s firm edict to stay out of it. As the mystery deepens, there are signs that a former cold case murder may also be linked, and as the suspects pile up, the danger increases. I loved everything about this story. The plot is well thought out and pieced together…nicely cohesive. Leo and Jasper are being developed as complex, sympathetic and 🔻 5d
robinb unique individuals. Also, Devlin does a stellar job with her research and location descriptions, whether it be dropping the reader into a morgue, the Scotland Yard or a gangster‘s notorious nightclub. She excels at every turn here, and I am totally hooked and invested in this series now.

Well done and so looking forward to the next outing. 5/5⭐️
