I liked this much more than I expected! At under 200 pages it‘s a quick read. And it isn‘t nearly as misogynistic as I was expecting from a hard-boiled detective novel 🤣. It‘s long, exhausting, funny, bawdy, and completely absurd. Did I love it? No. Is it hard to believe this book is 350 years old? Yes? Does it belong on the 1001 books list? Absolutely. It‘s an original for sure. #1001books #1000books

A collection of odd stories, all having to do with books (thus the title). The vocabulary, structure, and content of this book mean it‘s not an easy read, but I liked the oddness. Like a cross between Calvino and Mieville—but Borges came first. #intranslation #1001books #1000books #501books

It‘s weird, there is time travel, World War II, and a zoo on another planet. The story is told out of order. The narrator is unreliable. Probably. I enjoyed it, but should probably read it again to catch things I probably missed before I sorted out what was going on. #1001books #1000books

LizLemon I‘ve read it several times and every time I see something new. I think my inner ADHD child loves the circular-backward-inside-outside-upside down writing style 🤷🏼‍♀️ if you liked this, try any of his others. (edited) 5y

The Stone Diaries | Carol Shields

⭐️⭐️⭐️ I liked that this novel the follows the life of 1 character, Daisy Goodwill, through her birth, childhood, marriage, widowhood, decline, and death. But the last 2-2.5 chapters didn‘t feel in keeping with her character through the earlier parts of the book. I can, though, see how it won prizes. It feels different, with the “plot” being a fictional life.
