The Maltese Falcon
The Maltese Falcon: The Thin Man ; Red Harvest | Dashiell Hammett
(Book Jacket Status: Jacketed) The three classic novels published here in one volume are rich with the crisp prose, subtle characters, and intricate plots that made Dashiell Hammett one of the most admired writers of the twentieth century. A one-time detective and a master of deft understatement, Hammett virtually invented the hard-boiled crime novel. In The Maltese Falcon, Sam Spade, a private eye with his own solitary code of ethics, tangles with a beautiful and treacherous woman whose loyalties shift at the drop of a dime. The Thin Man introduces Hammett's wittiest creations, Nick and Nora Charles, who solve homicides in between wisecracks and martinis. And in Red Harvest, Hammett's anonymous tough-guy detective, the Continental Op, takes on the entire town of Poisonville in a deadly war against corruption. "Dashiell Hammett is a master of the detective novel, yes, but also one hell of a writer."Boston Globe Hammett was spare, hard-boiled, but he did over and over what only the best writers can ever do. He wrote scenes that seemed never to have been written before.Raymond Chandler Hammetts prose was clean and entirely unique. His characters were as sharply and economically defined as any in American fiction. The New York Times As a novelist of realistic intrigue, Hammett was unsurpassed in his own or any time.Ross Macdonald Dashiell Hammetts dialogues can be compared only with the best in Hemingway.Andr Gide Hammett is one of the best contemporary American writers.Gertrude Stein

This is Hammett‘s classic, noir, crime novel with his quintessential hard-boiled private detective, Sam Spade (played by Bogart in the movie). The book is smart and well written but be prepared for a ‘male gaze‘ treatment of women who are seemingly either femme fatales or angels.

dabbe Book and film noir are my faves, especially this one. Have you seen the movie? 😃 11mo
rachelk @dabbe Yes, but it was so long ago that the only thing I remembered was that I liked it! 11mo

dabbe @rachelk In my top five favorite movies. Once upon a time (when we had time to do fun activities as teachers that wouldn't get banned), I did an American Film Noir activity with my juniors (last 2 weeks of school). This movie was the culminating activity. The kids LOVED it. I still get goose bumps, remembering them walking into class and talking about it: “Do you think Spade will meet the Fat Man?“, etc. #happydays 🤗 11mo
rachelk @dabbe Wow! That‘s so cool! You probably inspired them to be lifelong fans of film noir! 11mo
dabbe @rachelk I hope so! The fact that most had never even seen a black and white film was astounding. 11mo

1. Dark and gritty, no clear cut good guys/bad guys, usually involves some sort of crime, and rarely has a happy ending.
2. Tagged. Or The Red Harvest. Hammett wrote great noir fiction.

I listened to the theatrical audio version of this short book. It was different and interesting. The theatrics gave it a little umph, and Sandra Oh as one of the narrators was also pretty cool, but it was still just so-so

Working toward another bingo and crossing off the Classic Mystery from the Catching Up On The Classics reading challenge. #bookspinbingo @TheAromaofBooks

TheAromaofBooks I've never read this one!! Interested to hear your thoughts! 4y
GinaKButler @TheAromaofBooks I‘d give it 3.5 stars. The writing is compact and the reader is trying to figure out the mystery along with the characters, as we are not privy to any of their thoughts. The characters are over-the-top and a lot of fun. It‘s definitely worth a read *if* you can remember that it was written 90 years ago because let‘s just say, that workplace environment would not fly today. I‘ll pick up some of his other mysteries. 😊 4y

QOTD- What are your thoughts on the Noir genre?

Hammett is very much like his mystery genre counter, Agatha Christie, in that their characterization is economical but rarely deep. If you love Christie's writing style than you'll probably love this, but for me, the mystery wasn't quite compelling enough to make up for it.

P.S. click the link in my bio to read my short story 'Pot O' Gold' a tale about a young boy and a crotchety Leprechaun.

Whilst I enjoyed this book, it‘s very much ‘of it‘s time‘ - by which I mean rather sexist!

I didn‘t love the writing style - very short staccato sentences, but some of the descriptive passages were lovely.

Having said that, it did make me keep reading, desperate to find out what happened at the end.

I‘ve been to the library - yay! (wearing my lovely squirrel mask, courtesy of @Caroline2 )

As you can see, it was very quiet. It all felt very safe, with a one-way system and labels to put out if you sat down so that they could clean the chair.

Difficult to browse, as anything you touched but didn‘t take, had to be put on a quarantine shelf so, the tagged book I knew I wanted for #jennyis30, and the other two have been on my radar for a while.

Soubhiville Sounds like a very smart system. Our libraries are still curbside only. It‘s for the best right now though. 4y

The first thing you need to know about The Maltese Falcon is that it is told from a fly-on-the-wall perspective. Hammett doesn‘t describe (or even hint at) any of the characters‘ internal worlds, thoughts, or feelings. It‘s up to the reader to guess for themselves each character‘s motivations and secrets, based purely on his descriptions of what they say and do. I liked this much more than I expected! At under 200 pages it‘s a quick read. And it isn‘t nearly as misogynistic as I was expecting from a hard-boiled detective novel 🤣.
