I can‘t believe it‘s time for May‘s #bookspin list already! Where has the year gone?

Here is yet another “slice of my bookshelves”, plus a few options for my topic bookclub: May‘s topic is a book with a map. And Advice for Future Corpses is for another bookclub.

What will @TheAromaofBooks choose for us this time?

Pickpick

Sparkling, darkly elegant, and deliberately crude. A fictionalised account of the courtly intrigue and censorship under Louis XIV when French folktales were given the name "fairytales" and standardised in the female-dominated literary salons. Some wild historical info, and a lot of dark tales and fates.

LeeRHarry Looking forward to picking this one up. 11h
Leniverse @LeeRHarry It's nice and short, which fits with the fairytale theme. 11h
JamieArc I‘ve had this on my shelf for a while and haven‘t really seen anyone talk about it. Good to see the review! 11h

Every so often, accidental themes start emerging with the books I'm reading. Lately, it is "books that I wish were in existence during my adolescence." What a unique, yet painfully accurate, approach to discussing depression and trauma. This one is going to stick with me for a while.

TheBookHippie I adored this book I read it last year from the library and promptly bought a copy. I agree with your sentiment. I wish books like this existed when I was a teen. 12h

Words I didn‘t expect to read in a picture book in general and in a Snow White retelling featuring minature ponies in particular : “I‘m a tax attorney” 🤭

monalyisha I totally forgot that this book existed! It‘s so good! 16h
thegirlwiththelibrarybag @monalyisha, the joke with the glue at the end took me out (Was very happy to see that Queenie was just getting her scrapbooking on, creating posters, on the next page) 15h

T. Kingfisher‘s spellbinding dark fairy tales never miss! Hemlock & Silver is a mysterious, surprising, and satisfying twist on the classic fairy tale of Snow White, in an immersive world all its own, starring a mid-30s spinster poison expert, a gruff bodyguard, the scientific method, and the most unsettling magic mirror you‘ll ever face! I loved this one and think it will please fans of Nettle & Bone like me! 🍎🪞🤢

Loved how the first one ended, loved how this one started and ended. Love that the series has just 2 books and not more. Of course, I loved the first one more and this felt a little slow paced but still good. DID NOT LIKE how Irsa's story panned out. Loved the characters and the twists and basically a full jam-packed book and a must-read series.
4.5/5🌟

Did she really, though? First of all, it's "hear, hear", not "here, here", and secondly, this takes place in France so she would be a lot more likely to say "well said" (Bien dit!)

And the book was doing so well up until now.

Found this re-telling of The Grimm' s "Six Swans" to be compelling and evocative. There was beautiful world building and Sorcha, the heroine, was strong. I found the last few chapters dragged. The fairy tale was complete so they were dedicated to completing the love story and I'm not much of a romance reader.
Still, it was good. And I think I'll take a break from fairy tales for a while.

vivastory 👋👋 Hope you are well 4d
merelybookish @vivastory Yes! Heading to London on Friday so excited about that! How are you? 4d
vivastory That *is* exciting. I hope you have a great time 💙 I'm doing well. Doing my best to carry on with all of the nonsense in the world. I'm sure you know how it is. Reading a Lethem doorstop of a novel, packed with life and wild characters (Fortress of Solitude,) and today started an interesting book of short stories by Proulx: Bad Dirt (edited) 4d
merelybookish @vivastory I voted in the Canadian election today. Hoping the nonsense candidate doesn't win here too. I started The Safekeep which is on the Women's Fiction prize shortlist. I also am trying to decide what to take on the airplane. 4d
vivastory Keeping my fingers crossed for you 🤞 I see that The Safekeep was published last year but for some reason it seems like it was a few years ago 4d
