My #camplitsy nominations (links and descriptions in the comments):

Free: My Search for Meaning, by Amanda Knox

Story of a Murder: the wives, the mistresses, and Doctor Crippen, by Hallie Rubenhold

Death of the Author, by Nnedi Okorafor

The Heart of Winter, by Jonathan Evison

#camplitsy25

CSeydel Amanda Knox reflects on her world-famous confinement in an Italian prison and her return to “ordinary” life. Though she was exonerated, it has taken more than a decade to reclaim her identity and truly feel free. 1d
CSeydel “No murderer should ever be the keeper of his victims‘ stories.” In this epic examination of one of the most infamous murders of the twentieth century, Rubenhold gives voice to those who have never properly been heard—the women. 1d
CSeydel One night after her life is upended, Zelu takes the risk that will define her life—she writes a book very unlike her others. A science fiction drama about androids and AI after the extinction of humanity. What follows is a tale of love and loss and extraordinary events in one world and another, and the lines between fiction and reality begin to blur. 1d
See All 12 Comments
CSeydel Through the years, Abe and Ruth Winter have fallen in and out of lockstep, and from their haunting losses and guarded secrets, a dependable partnership has been forged. When Ruth‘s loose tooth turns out to be something malicious, their beautiful, reliable life together comes to a crisis. Evison explores 70 years of big moments in subtle ways, elegantly braiding the Winters‘ turbulent history with their present-day battles. 1d
Kristy_K I just got Amanda Knox‘s book and can‘t wait to read it! 1d

Fundamentally: A Novel | Nussaibah Younis

Pickpick

I‘m torn on this one. At first I found it wickedly funny and irreverent, but later on the MC acted really immaturely which served to diminish and over-simplify a really serious subject. (De-radicalisation of Isis brides)

I also felt that Islam was portrayed in a really negative way, with only 1 Muslim character having any redeeming features.

Ultimately, this is a pick, saved by its ending and the audacity in tackling the subject in such a way.

Jas16 I even more curious about this one now. 2w
CarolynM Your review makes me think of Yellowface - I wonder how much influence the publisher/editor had on it turning out that way? 2w
BarbaraBB I get what you mean. I agree on the subject being simplified by a too ignorant narrator. On Islam I am not sure, I think that‘s the point she wants to make - it is her pov and I assume it‘s her experience but I am not sure of that. 2w

LeahBergen I‘m still intrigued! 2w
squirrelbrain I agree @BarbaraBB - I do think the author was making her point about Islam, but it concerned me that it wasn‘t nuanced enough and it would reinforce the views of readers who already have a negative perspective. (edited) 2w
squirrelbrain Interesting thought @CarolynM ! 🤔 I feel that the author has so much experience IRL of the subjects covered that it was her views alone. It would be interesting to know if the publishers tried to tone anything down though. 2w
squirrelbrain @Jas16 @LeahBergen - it‘s certainly like nothing I‘ve ever read and would provoke great discussions- would have been a good one for #camplitsy, don‘t you think @barbarabb ?! 2w
BarbaraBB @squirrelbrain Yes, it‘s a typical #CampLitsy book! Thinking about that longlist already 😇 2w
squirrelbrain So am I! @barbarabb 🤪 2w
Suet624 I just finished this and feel exactly the same way as you describe. 6d
squirrelbrain I‘m glad 😌 @Suet624 - it‘s always good to have someone agree with one‘s opinions, but when it‘s you - even better! 6d
Suet624 💕 6d

charl08 Very tempting! 2mo
ChaoticMissAdventures I have not read any, which is why I love this prize. I am trying to grab a couple from my library but they don't even have many of them 2mo
BarbaraBB @TheBookHippie Camp sounds so far away and yes, things are crazy. I try to forget about it by drowning myself in books and lists but it‘s a mess I know. 2mo
TheBookHippie @BarbaraBB I kinda put myself in the fire so 🤷🏻‍♀️😵‍💫✊🏼 2mo
TheKidUpstairs It's a very exciting list! I love that it's (mostly) shorter fiction, and that the authors are all first time nominees. 2mo
sarahbarnes I am so excited by this list! I put most of them on hold at the library yesterday. One of the things bringing me joy these days. 2mo
BarbaraBB @sarahbarnes yes, me too! 2mo

BarbaraBB This is so awesome. I have to check out all of these! Thank you 🩷 2mo
LeeRHarry Great list - stoked that This Motherless Land made it on there! 😊 2mo
kspenmoll Oh Thank you!!!! 2mo
ChaoticMissAdventures @LeeRHarry I think it has a shot, I saw it on one other person's prediction list too. Have you read it? I haven't gotten to it yet. 2mo
Chelsea.Poole Ooh! Nice list! I just checked out this one so I‘d be happy to see that make the cut 2mo
ChaoticMissAdventures @Chelsea.Poole this is one of the 2 I have read in my list! I didn't love The Echoes, but she does some interesting things with the ghost aspect and I know this prize loves some childhood trauma so I think it is a strong contender! 2mo
Chelsea.Poole Which other have you read? I‘ve only read Whale Fall on your list but interested in several others. 2mo
ChaoticMissAdventures @Chelsea.Poole I just read Shy Creatures and plan on reading Passiontide this week. Whale Fall sounds really good, something about the synopsis reminds me of 2mo
Chelsea.Poole Yes, very much like Clear. And another one I loved 2mo
AnneCecilie I would be very happy to see several of these on the list, like Shy Creatures, There are Rivers in the Sky, The Echoes and The Lost Love Song of Boysie Singh (edited) 2mo
squirrelbrain I‘m keeping a spreadsheet of Booktubers‘ predictions so I‘ve added you to it, hope you don‘t mind! I can send it to you if you wish? 🤪 Great list, by the way! A fair few are in the top 16 on the s/s but a couple I hadn‘t even heard of. 2mo
squirrelbrain Oh, and I‘m reading the ARC of We Pretty Pieces of Flesh right now. I‘m loving it. It‘s *very* Northern (British) though - even I struggled with the vernacular style at the start, and I‘m Northern, 🤪which is why it could make the list. 2mo
ChaoticMissAdventures @squirrelbrain oh how interesting! Would love to see. So curious if the ones that keep popping up are ones picked. Each year I get 2-3 correct guesses which I feel pretty good about! 2mo
squirrelbrain Let me have your email address and I‘ll send it to you. ☺️ 2mo
ChaoticMissAdventures @squirrelbrain ShawnaMatthews@proton.me. Thank so much!! 2mo
squirrelbrain There‘s at least another 3 Booktubers to add onto the list so I‘ll do that tomorrow and send it over to you then….bedtime here now. 🤪 😴 2mo
ChaoticMissAdventures @squirrelbrain I really only follow 2 booktubers who are into the WP and very rude of me they are both men - Simon Savage and Erik Karl Anderson. So a lot of these will be a surprise for me! 2mo

Pickpick

I was so bummed to not finish this in time during #CampLitsy and therefore was thrilled to see it on @monalyisha‘s #AuldLangSpine list; will now have to go back and read the discussion that I missed! I found this very emotionally engaging, and the writing had me vividly picturing characters, setting, and scenes throughout. Have the film rights to this been purchased? 🤔 Would be great on screen.

Christine And no, this doesn‘t take place in California. I just love my state. 3mo
Suet624 I live in Vermont but love your state too. Have spent lovely sections of time there. 3mo
monalyisha Disappearing Earth bowled me over. I was so excited/nervous for Bear — and so happy when I wasn‘t disappointed! 3mo

Christine @monalyisha I‘ve had DE on my TBR forever!! Must make time for it soon. 3mo

My official reading stats for 2024

As of today, these 12 books are the ones I continue to think about the most. The top row includes #1001books, #LitsyBookClub reads, a #CampLitsy read, and 1 reread for a #ShardlakeBR. I tend to focus on first time reads for my year end list, but rereading the Shardlake series must be included. The bottom row are all fantastic middle grade reads.

#ReadingStats #2024Stats #DaiseysReadingSummary

Ruthiella Nice stats! 👍 3mo
Liz_M I loved the nesting stories technique of Cloud Atlas! 3mo
Daisey @Liz_M It took a while for me to get into, but by the end, I also loved how it was set up. 3mo

tpixie Yes on The Postcard & Cloud Atlas. I checked out clear at the library, but had to return it before I read it. I can‘t remember how I learned about it, but maybe I need to get back to it since it made an impression on you. 3mo
Daisey @tpixie It was a #CampLitsy read so there were lots of posts about it last summer. It‘s a slim novel, but pretty powerful, although just a warning that the end is somewhat abrupt. 3mo
tpixie @Daisey thanks for the heads up 🩶 3mo
