Just started this-- a vastly different 20th century, where the titular character lives in the Empire of the Khazars-- dieselpunk & mechanical horses, & a Europe at war in 1942. I was sold on it by a blurb from John Crowley (who never blurbs!).

The irony of reading a book about the history of the printed book on my iPad is not lost on me (it's an e-galley); but from what I can tell the final physical book will be a treasure to hold & read. Definitely buying it when it's out!

Happy Publication day to this treasure! Cuban SF with dashes of Douglas Adams, Metal Hurlant's sexy irreverence, and brimming w/ideas.
The best SF criticizes present society & Yoss wryly engages the reader with Galaxy-spanning cultures & one entertaining 8ft tall veterinary biologist protagonist.

I beat up my galleys, I have to admit. But I prize them all the more for the evidence; food stains, wrinkled corners.,etc.
An odd modern fairy tale (sans fairies, heavy on the fantastic); absurd & funny, & poignant when you least expect it. Then, on the last page, it becomes a wonderful, new thing.
