Goodnight Mind
Goodnight Mind: Turn Off Your Noisy Thoughts and Get a Good Night's Sleep | Colleen E. Carney, Rachel Manber
3 posts | 1 read
Do you find yourself lying awake at night, ruminating about the events of the day? Do you toss and turn, worrying about what you have to do in the morning or what you did earlier in the day? If so, you are not alone. In fact, insomnia is the most common sleep disorder faced by the general population today. The most common complaint in those who have trouble sleeping is having a noisy mind. Sometimes, no matter how hard you try, it seems like you cannot silence all the internal dialogue. So what do you do when your mind is spinning and your thoughts just wont stop? Accessible, enjoyable, and grounded in evidence-based cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), Goodnight Mind directly addresses the effects of ruminationor having an overactive brainon your ability to sleep well. Written by two psychologists who specialize in sleep disorders, the book contains helpful exercises and insights into how you can better manage your thoughts at bedtime, and finally get some sleep. Traditional treatment for insomnia is usually focused on medications that promote sedation rather than on the behavioral causes of insomnia. Unfortunately, medication can often lead to addiction, and a host of other side effects. This is a great book for anyone who is looking for effective therapy to treat insomnia without the use of medication. This informative, small-format book is easy-to-read and lightweight, making it perfect for late-night reading.

I‘m terrible at choosing my top 10, so I‘m going with a stack of all my 5🌟reads of 2020 instead. (Plus the tagged book I borrowed from the library, Michelle Obama‘s Becoming my aunt is borrowing, & Goblet of Fire which was an audio re-read.

This year had really high highs & really low lows. I‘m grateful for good books, good friends, & family that helped me through it all. Here‘s to a new year, a fresh start, and, of course, more great books! ⬇️

BucklingBookshelves P.S. Looking at TWENTY 5-star books that came from my own shelves really reinforces how wonderful the #unreadshelfproject2019 has been for my reading life the past two years. Here‘s to another fantastic reading year with #theunreadshelfproject2020! (edited) 4y

Pickpick

A good choice for DIY CBT to change your thinking about how you sleep. The authors both have PhDs and direct sleep labs at large universities. If you want better advice than the usual "drink warm milk," and are open to some mental discomfort while you make changes, this one's for you.
