The Poetry Home Repair Manual
The Poetry Home Repair Manual: Practical Advice for Beginning Poets | Ted Kooser
5 posts | 2 read | 2 to read
Recently appointed as the new U. S. Poet Laureate, Ted Kooser has been writing and publishing poetry for more than forty years. In the pages of The Poetry Home Repair Manual, Kooser brings those decades of experience to bear. Here are tools and insights, the instructions (and warnings against instructions) that poetsaspiring or practicingcan use to hone their craft, perhaps into art. Using examples from his own rich literary oeuvre and from the work of a number of successful contemporary poets, the author schools us in the critical relationship between poet and reader, which is fundamental to what Kooser believes is poetrys ultimate purpose: to reach other people and touch their hearts. Much more than a guidebook to writing and revising poems, this manual has all the comforts and merits of a long and enlightening conversation with a wise and patient old frienda friend who is willing to share everything hes learned about the art hes spent a lifetime learning to execute so well.

So helpful teaching me how to edit poems. Everything about a poem must be tight, precise and perfect. Kooser leads novice poets on how to better communicate with poetry and how to chose your words, lines, and punctuation. If you‘re looking to improve your poetry (as a i was) I would highly recommend.

Keep it simple and write a lot about absolutely everything. Half way through, these are the two largest pieces of advice Kooser gives the reader to move past being a beginner. Switching to Harry while I wait for the cutie to get done at work.

“Most of a poet‘s education is self-education, and most of what you‘ll learn you‘ll teach yourself through reading and writing poems.”

It was good. Just like any other writing guide...take what you need and leave the rest.
