Better Than New: Lessons I've Learned from Saving Old Homes (and How They Saved Me) | Nicole Curtis
5 posts | 6 read | 3 to read
A New York Times and USA Today Bestseller For the first time, Nicole Curtis, the star of the megahit HGTV and DIY Network show Rehab Addict, reveals her private struggles, her personal victories, and the inspiring lessons we can all learn from them. Part celebrity memoir and part self-help book, Better Than New goes behind the scenes with an entrepreneurial single mom who worked her way from waitress/real estate agent to home renovation expert, preservationist, and television star. With eight chapters in the book—eight lessons told through her life story and through several of the homes she has remodeled—readers will get to see another side of Nicole Curtis, including the private and personal struggles that are not seen on TV. Working in Detroit and Minneapolis, Curtis has opened her fans’ eyes to the beauty of older homes and the value of reclaiming and reusing authentic original materials rather than sending dumpster loads to the local landfill. Curtis applies the same principles to her personal life—valuing old friends, rescuing dogs, and advocating for the wounded, the elderly, and the disadvantaged. Readers will find inspiration to apply to their own lives supplemented with never-before-seen photos of Curtis and the homes she renovates. Better Than New is a visual treat, packed with more than 75 color photographs from Curtis’s personal collection, ranging from family photos to before-and-after photos of the rehabbed homes’ interiors and exteriors.

A quick read that I found for $1 at a thrift store. I watched the first couple seasons of Rehab Addict on TV and really enjoyed them. We cancelled cable a few years ago, so I missed the rest of the show. I‘ll check to see if they‘re on YouTube 🤔 Anyway, you never know what‘s going on in someone‘s life from outward appearances. Nicole tells about some of her life lessons. BTW, I wish I had a fraction of her energy. 3/5🔨s

Suelizbeth I love Rehab Addict. I‘ll have to look for this book. I laughed at your rating it 3/5 🔨 6y
Wife @Suelizbeth Hey. If you are in the U.S., I would be happy to send you my copy of this book. My email is bumblebee21 at comcast.net if you are interested. Tag me if you email, I‘ve had a couple problems with getting emails lately. I‘ll give you an alternate email address if it doesn‘t work. 🌹 6y

I love her show Rehab Addict and this was a bargain book ( $2 Amazon!). Although the subtitle is “Lessons I‘ve Learned from Saving Homes, I really wanted to find out about the homes she saved.

I enjoyed learning how she got into the business and some of the behind the scenes details. I just skimmed ahead when she talked about her relationships. Enjoyable read if you‘re a fan of the show.

Nicole's story is one of perseverance and belief. Belief that there is kindness, goodness and much to be learned by each person we meet, everything we experience. Never judge a book by its cover. overcoing celebrity media blitz & backstabbers has not jaded her. Describing each reno-difficulties & hardwork- comparing it to her personal lives problems is brilliant. Every house, community and neighborhood held a lesson. Positive, uplifting.

I finally picked this up again after a week+ and I had read the first page about 3 times. I love when books speak to you so quickly, and when you can also hear the author's voice come through so clearly. Looking forward to this read & love all the photos sprinkled in.
