Keeping in mind this is a hi-lo book with YA-like content but lower reading level, I still don't think this is a great example of the form. The plot is melodramatic, making the heroine Kai look pretty daft. I did like how she was portrayed as strong and intelligent otherwise. I would have liked to see more depth to her Navajo and Stoney Nakoda identities. Richard Wagamese's HIM STANDING is a stronger Indigenous hi-lo book IMO.
