Lizard Music | Daniel Pinkwater
post image
Pickpick

Daniel Pinkwater is definitely a marmite author. Either you're totally willing to embrace an 11-year-old left on his own for a week who starts seeing a band of giant lizards playing music on late-night TV and then meets up with an old black man with a chicken on his head who seems to go by several mysterious aliases and they travel together to a floating invisible island to meet up with a bunch of lizards named Reynold... or you're not 😂

TheAromaofBooks (cont'd) I love Pinkwater and his absolute out-there wackiness, so I rolled with it. The mysterious Chicken Man shows up in several other books and is a favorite character, too. I read this one for my 1976 slot of #192025 and it was fun reading a book set when TV actually went off the air at night and a grape soda was a dime.

@Librarybelle - only one book after this to complete the challenge!!!

TheAromaofBooks @julieclair - He's not for everyone, but The Snarkout Boys and the Avocado of Death is genuinely one of my favorite books. It's just SO ridiculous. 2w

Cujo was the last book read in October and here is my October wrap up overall. Cujo definitely unlocked a new fear in me especially with rabies cases on the rise in my county and so many who don‘t follow leash laws. I definitely could have made bingo this month but it was nice to be busy with fun things like a concert and Halloween and meeting new people. Great month! #HauntedShelf #GrimReaders #OneSnacktoRuleThemAll #Chocolotiers #TBRTarot ⬇️

MatchlessMarie This book fit the book with an animal as a main character prompt for TBRTarot. #LosersClub #BookSpinBingo (edited) 2w
BarkingMadRead This is one of his more terrifying books for sure! The ones that could really happen are always so much scarier! 2w
MatchlessMarie @BarkingMadRead It also made me think damn cell phones save lives but not for several more years 🤣 2w

It‘s not important who you are; the only thing that matters is what kind of illness you suffer from.

This was a long, strange trip. A dystopian medical universe. Like reading a dream/nightmare crossover. 1984 vibes.

Twenty-five scary stays where ghosts check in, but don‘t check out.

This was interesting. Historical backgrounds and paranormal accounts of different hotels around the world.

Not no but hell no. Yikes on bikes. I would have DNFd at about 50% but this was a book club book and I wanted to be able to discuss all the awful 😂 Luckily everyone pretty unanimously hated this one. The premise had potential but this was terrible. It‘s been marketed as dark gothic romance but this is not romance nor did it really feel like horror. It was like a mish mash of tropes and hoping for the best. 😬 #HauntedShelf #GrimReaders ⬇️

MatchlessMarie @PuddleJumper Next ones we are doing are Girl Dinner and/or Dark Matter. We floated the idea of having a runner up book in case some of us want to read both or one or the other so we can have more conversations going. So far it‘s been a good group and a neat way to meet people. 2w
TheAromaofBooks Great review! 😂 2w
Reggie Ughhhh the “I read this bad book for bookclub” hits hard. Been there. Like quite a few times lol 2w
MatchlessMarie @Reggie 🤣 This is my first time being in an in person book club so I‘m not sure how they usually go but I like that we are able to give suggestions and then vote on what we ultimately end up reading. 2w

This was a fun mystery, nothing groundbreaking. I enjoyed the banter and Mart's huge words. However, I needed more horses 😂 The villain felt ridiculously obvious here, but the other aspects of the mystery (how, why, time capsule, clues, etc) were fun.

TheAromaofBooks #BobWhiteBuddies !!! I totally missed September's book and I apologize. September was just... not good. ANYWAY. Any thoughts on this one? I felt like Sammy was almost the anti-Dan story - an example of someone refusing to take advantage of the good paths being offered. I'd love to hear your thoughts!!

lauraisntwilder There's not a lot about horses, you're right, except for Bobby and Mr. Pony. Speaking of which, wouldn't Reagan have seen Hoppy in the woods when Mr. Pony got spooked? 2w

BookmarkTavern @lauraisntwilder Bobby says that Reagan was over working by the road, so he might not have seen it. 2w
BookmarkTavern Also, totally agree on needed more horses. Although I loved how supportive everyone was of Bobby earning how to ride. 2w
lauraisntwilder @BookmarkTavern Oh, that's right! That's why Bobby had to chase after the pony himself. 2w

I picked this one up because it is by an Ohio author who decided to use the Buckeye Trail (a trail that travels in a circle around Ohio) as part of her setting. However, this just didn't really work for me. A lot of the characters' actions didn't really make sense, especially towards the end. The motivation of the killer also had me a little confused as well. It was an okay read, but I don't see myself picking up the sequel.

TheAromaofBooks @lauredhel - I've found this year's prompts more challenging!! I still have five left. I'm not very scientific about this challenge. I seem to just go on vibes 😂 2w

Some of you might remember I posted about a local bookclub that was just getting started in SA.. well this was our first book. Post Stolen from IG from one of the other ladies in our book club who makes book themed cocktails. I loved this story that is set in the world of the Ruinous Love trilogy. If you read Butcher and Blackbird, the FMC in this book was a minor character. This book is the start of a trilogy all focused on the same couple. ⬇️

This was a reread for me, and while I always love reading along with the #HashtagBrigade , ol' Victor got on my nerves even more this time around. He's just so useless! If he spent half the time actually doing something productive as he does sitting around and bemoaning his fate, the creature wouldn't have had the opportunities for destruction that he had. In the end, I think both Frankenstein and the creature are both monsters. This book ⬇

TheAromaofBooks (cont'd) definitely deserves its status as a classic and is completely worth the read, but I get too aggravated with literally everyone to really love it. Soft pick.

I got slightly confused and read November's #ChristieCapers book instead of October's 😂 I love Tommy and Tuppence, and the concept here is fun. However, this one always falls a little flat for me because I'm just not familiar enough with the classic detectives Christie references throughout the book. Still, some of the mysteries are quite good, and I do love the way Christie spoofs Hercule Poirot at the end.
