I didn‘t really realize it until today, but grimace is sort of a weird word to say. Try saying it a few times and see if you agree 😁 And who could forget lovable Grimace (but why did they give him that name?) of McDonald‘s fame! #weirdwordwednesday #weirdwords

Kerrbearlib Love it! 2mo

ncsufoxes When I was little my parents took me to McDonald‘s somewhere in NJ & they had a person in a Grimace costume. Apparently I was terrified. I vaguely remember it (I was probably 3 or 4). lil1inblue Ok, now I'm curious. Growing up, I always heard the term back-handed compliment - does that derive from left-handed compliment? Is it meant to be the "PC" term for it? ? 2mo
Bookwomble That time when my daughter was about 6 years old and said to my mum after kissing her, "I love you grandma, but you are prickly!" Luckily mum thought it was hilarious and said she'd wax her top lip in future! ? 2mo
dabbe @lil1inblue You bring up an excellent point. I tried to research and the best I could find was the “left-handed compliment“ has been around a lot longer (due to that idea of “left“ meaning “evil“), but “backhanded“ also has negative origins in the fact that it originated as a “backslap“ instead of a direct one ... it still hurts! 💛💜🧡 2mo
dabbe @Bookwomble Your mum is FABUL💛OUS ... as is your daughter! 💛💜🧡 2mo
CSeydel @lil1inblue Same! I‘ve never heard “left handed compliment” before, although I know left-handedness has long been associated with things being wrong or bad (eg, “sinister”, “gauche”, etc.) I suppose it‘s like how my kids‘ generation grew up only hearing “criss cross applesauce” and never … well, you know. 2mo

dabbe I want a golem as a protector! Mine would probably turn into a destructive one, though ... like Gollum in LOTR. 🩵💙🩵 4mo

CatLass007 I just finished the first three books of the Black Hat Bureau series, in which one of the main characters is a golem. Fun books! 4mo
lil1inblue @dabbe #ditto 🩵🤣 4mo
AlaMich This is a great novel with a golem as the MC. 4mo
CBee @dabbe hahaha mine probably would too. I‘d rather some Heinzelmännchen: https://germangirlinamerica.com/heinzelmannchen-the-elves-of-cologne/ 4mo
CBee @AlaMich I‘ve heard that‘s a good one! 4mo
CBee @JenniferEgnor one that wreaks havoc, I see 🫣🫣 4mo
CBee @CatLass007 cool! 4mo
dabbe @CBee @CBee Oh, yes please! How adorable! 🩵💙🩵 4mo
CatLass007 There was an episode of the X-Files that featured a golem. But when Dana Scully was narrating, she called it a gollum. 4mo
AnnCrystal 🆒☺️👍🏼💝. 4mo
StaceGhost I just saw a really cool seminar about golems in folklore! Love all the new books with golems coming out 4mo
CBee @CatLass007 I think the pronunciation is similar? I can see how one would pronounce it gollum. I‘m too much of an LOTR fan to make that mistake 😂🤓 4mo
CBee @StaceGhost that sounds awesome! 4mo

I adore mythological stories.

CBee ME TOO!!! I never tire of mythology. Edith Hamilton‘s book turned me into such a nerd for it 🤓🤓 5mo
lil1inblue I vividly remember my introduction to Greek mythology in the 4th grade. I was OBSESSED. I remember being so morose when the unit was over! Since then, I've been drawn to all sorts of mythological stories form all sorts of cultures! 😍 5mo

dabbe @lil1inblue Me, too! I loved that the stories were short, too! 😂 I adored teaching THE ILIAD and THE ODYSSEY to my honors freshmen. They didn't love it as much as I did, though! 😍 5mo
lil1inblue @dabbe I loved reading both in high school - my teacher adored them, as well, so it made it all the better! So many great discussions! 🤩 I should reread them one of these days.... 5mo

I read about the Basque arborglyphs in #atreeaday and then, about the Pando aspen in Maggie, etc… (finished last night). Simply put: trees are amazing. #weirdwords #weirdwordwednesday

SamAnne In the desert of SE Oregon, on Steens Mountain, one can find many carvings in the old aspen by Basque and other sheepherders from the early 1900s, maybe earlier. They are still there. Very cool, except for the disturbing carvings of female figures with antlers. Likely a little later by white dudes. 5mo
BookmarkTavern Oh wow! That‘s so cool! 5mo
lil1inblue @SamAnne How cool! That sounds absolutely breathtaking! 5mo
lil1inblue I love this! 😍 5mo
dabbe We just walked by some aspens on our walk with the pups. We're up north this week and are loving the weather and trees. L😍VE these new words. 🩵💙🩵 5mo
CBee @Deblovestoread we don‘t have them here - wrong kind of climate 😅 5mo
CBee @SamAnne hi!! So good to see you back on Litsy ♥️ Oof. So does it seem like someone came later and added the offensive carvings? That‘s awful. 5mo
CBee @dabbe sounds lovely! 5mo
dabbe @SamAnne 😱😳😤 5mo
SamAnne @CBee aw thank you. I‘ve missed the friendly lovely crew here. 5mo

Did you know (I didn‘t) that the cashew is not a nut? It‘s the seed of a cashew apple, classified as a “drupe.” The book, “A Tree a Day,” inspired me to research this - there is a page devoted to The Cashew of Pirangi in Brazil - it‘s enormous! #naturalitsy #weirdwords #weirdwordwednesday

CatLass007 Cool. 5mo
CBee @Megabooks wait, mushrooms? Omg 🫣🫣😂😂 5mo
CBee @Deblovestoread I didn‘t read it for three months so I just started with July - that NY “resolution” didn‘t last long 😂 5mo
CBee @peanutnine oh wow! I actually read you shouldn‘t eat cashews if you‘re allergic to nuts which is odd. And even more interesting is that you CAN eat them! Cashews are yummy. (edited) 5mo
Deblovestoread @Megabooks Sat what now? I will never look at a mushroom the same again 🤣🤣🤣 5mo
CBee @Deblovestoread I KNOW 🍄 🫣 5mo
Megabooks “Therefore, a mushroom is more like a genderless fungus penis…” https://www.mycopia.com/blog/1120 Biology is Wild!! @cbee @Deblovestoread 5mo

CatLass007 Awesome! I didn‘t know you are a novelist. Have you written anything in which I might be interested? You have to remember that I‘m interested in reading every genre. Also, I agree with @julesG, it does sound more eloquent than “pantster.” Thanks for the tag! 6mo
BookmarkTavern @CatLass007 This one‘s a cozy mystery! And nothing published as of yet! But I‘m hoping to have something by the end of the year to start querying. We‘ll see how that goes! 🤞🏻 6mo

My #weirdwordwednesday pick! I remember discovering this word during a word game - maybe Words With Friends or similar - and always thought it was a bit silly sounding. This little googol mascot guy should have googly eyes, I think 😂 #weirdwords

CatLass007 Another great word! I was listening to Death Comes To Pemberley and decided to look up a word instead of just figuring out what it meant from its context. I actually should have stuck to my habit with this particular word because it was very difficult to find a real definition or even a picture. What on earth did the word jives mean in 1803? 6mo
BookmarkTavern I heard the word googolplex (10 raised to the power of a googol) first when I was in school, and that‘s how I learned about googol. 😄 6mo
See All 12 Comments
CBee @CatLass007 jives? In 1803? Hmm. I have no idea 😂😂 6mo
CBee @BookmarkTavern I should have included googolplex! 6mo
CatLass007 I‘ve heard of gewgaws but not googols. “Jives around the prisoner‘s wrists,” was the quote in the book. Shackles. 6mo
CBee @CatLass007 gotcha. What are gewgaws? 6mo
CatLass007 Gewgaws are what I would call “thingies.” I‘ve never actually looked up the definition. As usual. 6mo
CBee @CatLass007 I looked it up 😂 Couldn‘t resist. “Gewgaws:
a showy thing, especially one that is useless or worthless.”
6mo
CatLass007 Okay, so I was wrong. Thingies are useful. 6mo
CBee @CatLass007 I agree! Thingies are very useful, especially when you don‘t know what something is called. “That thingie over there” and such 😂 6mo
CatLass007 Exactly!! 6mo
