Maria Fearing was a badass. She became a missionary to Africa at 56. It's 1894 and no missionary board will pay her way because of her age. So she sold her home and supported herself. While in Africa she built homes for orphaned and kidnapped girls. She oversaw said homes until 1915 when the age restrictions of mission she was part of forced her to retire. She returned to the US where she continued to teach until her death in 1937.
