Guantanamo Diary
Guantanamo Diary | Mohamedou Ould Slahi
6 posts | 12 read | 23 to read
The acclaimed national bestseller, welcomed on the cover of the New York Times Book Review--the first and only diary written by a still-imprisoned Guantanamo detainee. Mohamedou Slahi has been imprisoned at the detainee camp at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba since 2002. In all these years, the United States has never charged him with a crime. Although he was ordered released by a federal judge, the U.S. government fought that decision, and there is no sign that the United States plans to let him go. Three years into his captivity Slahi began a diary, recounting his life before he disappeared into U.S. custody and daily life as a detainee. His diary is not merely a vivid record of a miscarriage of justice, but a deeply personal memoir---terrifying, darkly humorous, and surprisingly gracious. "Guantanamo Diary" is a document of immense emotional power and historical importance."

This is quite literally the pencil-scrawled, partly redacted (later recreated), diary of a GTMO detainee who was held without charges (of course) and subjected to horrifying, literally jaw-dropping torture methods (but no waterboarding, if the info for the upcoming film has you wondering) for 15 years.

This is an important book and I'm glad it exists.

Mehso-so

This is a tough book to review. It‘s quite literally a diary. Who am I to criticize the author? This is his reality and much of it is harsh and it is all unfair. However, I did not enjoy reading this nor did I feel particularly surprised or enlightened by it. This was also a terrible choice for audio, since they say “readacted” for every redaction. #readharderchalleng #writteninprison

#JuneBookBugs Day 12 - Can't Even

I'm diving into this diary, written by an inmate at the Guantánamo Bay Detention Camp. He's been there since 2001, despite never being charged. It took a 6-year legal battle to be able to release his diary, and there's such a significant amount of redaction that I can't even.

CouronneDhiver I wonder how this would work as an audiobook 😂😂😂 8y
Izai.Amorim Guantanamo is a shame. No one shall be locked up without a sentence given by a judge after a fair trial. That's democracy 101. Not saying the inmates are innocent, but if guilty, why not charge them and have a trial? 8y
andrew61 I think the guardian books podcast did a serialisation of this book about 3 years ago with celebrities doing readings, im sure it will stll be available if you look on their backlist. 8y

Pickpick

This is an essential, harrowing, jaw dropping, tragic read. Mohamedou Ould Slahi's diary of interrogations and imprisonment in Guantanamo is shocking to say the least. To know that we treat other human beings like that, irrespective of guilt, is horrific. Oh and by the way Mohamedou spent 14yrs without charge, because there was and is no evidence of him ever being a terrorist or involved in terrorism, being grossly interrogated by the US. 😔
