A selection of Maupassant's brilliant, glittering stories set in the Parisian beau monde and Normandy countryside. Introducing Little Black Classics: 80 books for Penguin's 80th birthday. Little Black Classics celebrate the huge range and diversity of Penguin Classics, with books from around the world and across many centuries. Here are stories lyrical and savage; poems epic and intimate; essays satirical and inspirational; and ideas that have shaped the lives of millions. Guy de Maupassant (1850-1893). Maupassant's works available in Penguin Classics are A Parisian Affair and Other Stories, Bel-Ami and Pierre and Jean.

" Pauline took poor, weeping Madeline in her arms, kissed and rocked her for a long time and then said: 'Now look. As long as you know it's not your fault. You can't stop men doing stupid things. It was his decision so it's just too bad, that's all.' "

Figured it was about time to work through my Penguin 'Little Black Classics', considering I've had them for years and barely read half of them 😬 (They've made even more of them since I bought these too)

That said, I liked this collection. It was surprisingly open minded in the title story, where lesbians were at once the villains and not. Where they were both reviled and embraced...

TCLinrow Only the main (male) character was really shown to act negatively towards them, though the fact that 'everyone' at 'La Grenouillère' was chanting 'Lesbos'really could have gone either way initially.

It was an interesting read, and I might look into more work by Guy de Maupassant now.

Four short stories of Parisian life from a master of the medium. I've read Maupassant before, but these were new to me.

Really enjoyed this collection of short stories and will definitely pick more of his up. There was a good mix and some of humour was far more raunchy than I would have expected, all in all, a very good time!
