Hinduism: A Very Short Introduction | Kim Knott
2 posts | 3 read | 2 reading | 1 to read
Hinduism is practised by nearly eighty per cent of India's population, and by some seventy million people outside India. In this Very Short Introduction, Kim Knott offers a succinct and authoritative overview of this major religion, and analyses the challenges facing it in the twenty-first century. She discusses key preoccupations of Hinduism such as the centrality of the Veda as religious texts, the role of Brahmins, gurus, and storytellers in the transmission of divine truths, and the cultural and moral importance of epics such as the Ramayana. In this second edition Knott considers the impact of changes in technology and the flourishing of social media on Hinduism, and looks at the presence of Hinduism in popular culture, considering pieces such as Sita Sings the Blues. She also analyses recent developments in India, and the impact issues such as Hindu nationalism and the politicization of Hinduism have on Hindus worldwide. ABOUT THE SERIES: The Very Short Introductions series from Oxford University Press contains hundreds of titles in almost every subject area. These pocket-sized books are the perfect way to get ahead in a new subject quickly. This up for next week‘s adventures.

I‘ve already had an interview with a very charming Hindu and our exercise is a week of vegetarian eating. Easy enough! 🥬

britt_brooke This cover is beautiful in its simplicity. 💚 3y
Tamra @britt_brooke the whole series has this type of design. I like it too! 3y
Vansa Most Hindus aren't vegetarian! It's a myth propagated by savarnas, to enforce a rigid caste hierarchy and other most of the country. Only around 25-30% of Hindus are vegetarian. Hinduism, like all religions, has a lot of good things to say. Vegetarianism, which is directly linked to the caste system, isn't one of those. 3y
Tamra @Vansa what‘s interesting is the Hindu I interviewed said the same about the percentage - actually his guesstimate was 15%. I‘m looking forward to learning more! 3y

This book takes a scholarly approach explaining to the reader some key foundations of Hinduism and it‘s relation to Indian society. What I appreciate the most of the book is the author acknowledging her bias but also explaining certain parts of the history of Hinduism which might not have been included if it wasn‘t for her bias (ie the roles of women and untouchables in Hindu culture and how they are shaping the religion to meet their needs).

MrBook Nice review! 4y
ephemeralwaltz I love these Oxford editions. 4y
Schnoebs @ephemeralwaltz it‘s my first one. I also have the one on the anthropocene but I‘m think of getting all the ones they have on the different types of religion. 4y
