I did a report on this book for school and in the process emailed Ms. Shoup. i was comparing this book to on the road again by Jack Kerouac, and ultimately i ended up basically asking why she wrote this book, because it's not like most of her other works. She told me this was originally her friends idea for a movie, and the characters represent her nephews soon after her sister passed away, makes the book make more sense now kind of!
