Acid Test
Acid Test: LSD, Ecstasy, and the Power to Heal | Tom Shroder
3 posts | 3 read | 3 to read
A book that should start a long-overdue national conversation. Dave Barry With the F.D.A. agreeing to new trials to test MDMA (better known as Ecstasy) as a treatment for PTSDwhich, if approved, could be available as a drug by 2021Acid Test is leading the charge in an evolving conversation about psychedelic drugs. Despite their current illegality, many Americans are already familiar with their effects. Yet while LSD and MDMA have proven extraordinarily effective in treating anxiety disorders such as PTSD, they still remain off-limits to the millions who might benefit from them. Through the stories of three very different men, award-winning journalist Tom Shroder covers the drugs roller-coaster history from their initial reception in the 1950s to the negative stereotypes that persist today. At a moment when popular opinion is rethinking the potential benefits of some illegal drugs, and with new research coming out every day, Acid Test is a fascinating and informative must-read.

Fascinating book on the healing power of psychedelics. This book describes the discovery of LSD and ends with MDMA. The structure of the book weaves between the stories of three people; a Marine with PTSD who participated in a clinical trial, a former ER doctor who shifted his career to become a psychiatrist and is leading psychedelic research, and the director of MAPS who is fighting the government‘s prohibition of psychedelics. #MountTBR

My very first Litsy post! 🤗 Easily one of the best things that I've read in a very long time. Incredible from beginning to end. It is very well researched and written. Written to the point that you almost feel like you're having a conversation directly with the author, and the other people that he researched for the book (Michael, Rick, and Nick). Each with their own life changing story. Goodreads -> https://goo.gl/SAuCpy #lsd #mdma #research

I really liked this one; it was informs without being dry, and I really liked the way Shroder arranged the narratives. My only criticism, as a clinician, is that I wish he'd devoted more space to the experiences of survivors of sexual violence and child abuse, both of which cause PTSD at substantially higher rates than combat. Such cases often involve greater clinical complexity and secondary trauma.
