A really interesting read that tracks the history of cops into being and the events and laws that have shaped them into what they are now and the power they have. It was both an eye opening and somewhat terrifying read. I read the revised and updated edition that was released this year (2021).

I bought this after Ferguson and finally started it today. It never stopped being relevant, but it is highly salient once again. 🙁

Riveted_Reader_Melissa That is one topical read! 5y

At once eye-opening and not surprising. A devastating look at how the drug war has helped erode the 4th amendment, and a call for vigilance against a creeping and expanding police state.

The most chilling book I‘ve read in years.

Well another disturbing book on the state of the world. A fascinating history of the militarisation of Police Forces across the United States, from the initial days of SWAT teams being created in several big cities to the modern day where most town police departments have tactical units equipped with the latest in military technology supplied by the federal government. Instead of being used in a limited number of tactically difficult situations,

Oblomov26 the majority of SWAT team these days are utilised in drug raids (often no knock raids). This seems a long way from the “to serve and protect” mindset. And this book was published in 2013, based on recent news reports things have gotten worse. 8y
