Vanishing New York
Vanishing New York: How a Great City Lost Its Soul | Jeremiah Moss
2 posts | 2 read | 1 reading | 3 to read
An unflinching chronicle of gentrification in the twenty-first century and a love letter to lost New York by the creator of the popular and incendiary blog Vanishing New York. For generations, New York City has been a mecca for artists, writers, and other hopefuls longing to be part of its rich cultural exchange and unique social fabric. But today, modern gentrification is transforming the city from an exceptional, iconoclastic metropolis into a suburbanized luxury zone with a price tag only the one percent can afford. A Jane Jacobs for the digital age, blogger and cultural commentator Jeremiah Moss has emerged as one of the most outspoken and celebrated critics of this dramatic shift. In Vanishing New York, he reports on the citys development in the twenty-first century, a period of "hyper-gentrification" that has resulted in the shocking transformation of beloved neighborhoods and the loss of treasured unofficial landmarks. In prose that the Village Voice has called a "mixture of snark, sorrow, poeticism, and lyric wit," Moss leads us on a colorful guided tour of the most changed parts of townfrom the Lower East Side and Chelsea to Harlem and Williamsburglovingly eulogizing iconic institutions as theyre replaced with soulless upscale boutiques, luxury condo towers, and suburban chains. Propelled by Moss hard-hitting, cantankerous style, Vanishing New York is a staggering examination of contemporary "urban renewal" and its repercussionsnot only for New Yorkers, but for all of America and the world.

Hey litsy I'm still alive but not reading as much because I tend to bike places now. But I'm reading this and it's kinda blah.

2017 has kind of been a dud year for books for me 🤷‍♀️

Librariana But you're still here! And you're reading! Which is what matters in the end. Sorry the book is kind of blah. The title makes it sound intriguing, tho! I❤NY 😊🇺🇸🍎🗽🚕🦁🏛📚🦁 7y
8little_paws @Librariana I feel like you're better off reading this if you want the history of how new York got the way it did 7y
Librariana @8little_paws - I was trying to show solidarity via emoji 😄😁😊 I'm actually deep into 7y

8little_paws @Librariana omg how is that!! I'm not sure I can handle it. 7y
Librariana @8little_paws - I think with as many "breaking news" notifications as I see every day... which inevitably end up having a toddler-like tone, I needed to hear her story. She's received plenty of criticism online, but I'm trying to remain neutral and just hear her out. She has a very... stoic? Pragmatic kind of tone? But I feel that it makes her more human to me versus a political figure. 7y
Librariana @8little_paws - don't get me wrong... I'm still with her 💙 but I'm also listening to an audiobook by an author who backed Mr. Sanders and that's also resonating with me... helping me see things from an additional perspective. I'd just much rather have seen our nation go in a different direction... 7y
