Subdivision: A Novel | J. Robert Lennon
post image
Pickpick

I wasn‘t sure what this was all about, a guest house in the ‘town ‘ called Subdivision. Run by Clara and the Judge , our MC checks in and there is a jigsaw on the table to finish, and a crow that‘s watching. So begins a heady journey. I found it often hard to connect with, but I did develop a compassion for the MC, and I never wanted to bail, and at times I felt moved to tears. A haunting book when you really think about it.

Balibee146 Oh this looks right up my street 👍 2d
Cathythoughts @Balibee146 It‘s a strange one 😁 2d

Cathythoughts @CarolynM It‘s a strange one. Kafkaesque , so I‘m not sure what I read. But I started to read a more normal book today , and I found myself paying more attention , and it was interesting…. 🤷‍♀️ 16h

Broken River | J Robert Lennon

Pickpick

This is the story of a house in the woods where a murder happens. The house remains empty for many years, until a new family move in hoping to repair their relationships and their lives.
At times I wanted to bail because it was really very scary, and because of my intense dislike for a certain character. But I was too caught up in the story, so well written and unputdownable. The house is a character too and also the snow.

BarbaraBB I loved this one for all the reasons you mention 😉 1w
Tamra Oh, this sounds terrifically eerie! Stacked! 1w
Lesliereadsalot Definitely reading this one! 1w

TrishB Been on my pile for a while. Saying it‘s very scary makes me want to read now! 1w
sarahbarnes I really liked this one, too. I agree it was very creepy in parts. I also loved the house as a character. 1w

Cathythoughts @Tamra @Lesliereadsalot @batsy @Trishb Whenever you may get there , I do look forward to your reviews. You have been warned ! It‘s edgy and scary. 1w
Cathythoughts @sarahbarnes Isn‘t he a great writer. It makes all the difference. A bit too graphic for me in some ways , but having said that, I‘ll read another book of his shortly 😬😂 1w
Cathythoughts @TrishB Oh no! 😂 I‘ll be interested to see if you find as scary as I did , whenever you may get there xx 1w
Cathythoughts @BarbaraBB Thankyou for those .. I‘ll definitely read one soon ( once I recover 😂) He‘s a good writer 👍🏻 1w

Books I read recently.
My favorite was Strangers. Set in Tokyo , a recently divorced screenwriter has moved into his studio workplace to live. Immediately atmospheric. Suggestive , thoughtful, a short book and every word is numbered 👌🏻. I loved this one.

North Woods was a beautiful book to read.

Christ on a Bike I enjoyed, but didn‘t love it.

Writing Retreat , ok till 2d half. Then quickly a bail.

batsy Haven't heard of Strangers! Sounds good, adding to the list 👍🏾 2w
sarahbarnes What @batsy said! I just saw the post from @BarbaraBB on this book as well. Good to hear you also liked it! 2w

Great storytelling about a young girl and her relationship with her father , her friends. Navigating those pre-teen years in New Zealand. Then, a beautiful teacher that everyone falls in love with. Suspenseful, a page turner for me with quality writing.
I‘m looking up more by Catherine Chidgey now. Lovely writer to discover here on Litsy. 🙏

Cathythoughts @erzascarletbookgasm It‘s really good. X 4w
Tamra Can‘t wait! 😄 4w
Cathythoughts @Lesliereadsalot And there are funny suspenseful bits too. Like when she is swanning around in front of the mirror in Mrs Prices bedroom, in Mrs Prices underwear.. saying ‘ Now People , who‘s like some ice chips … ‘ I thought that was tense , but funny. 4w
Cathythoughts @Tamra Looking forward to your thoughts 👍🏻 4w
Ruthiella I found this one to be so tense, I had to skip to the end, find out how the chips lay, and then I went back and read the middle. 😬 4w
Lesliereadsalot Yes! Humor really adds to the believability of the story. 4w
marleed I‘m intrigued! 4w

I enjoyed this one , a woman obsessed with her husband. Well written in a suspenseful way. But , the ending was terrible! It kind of ruined the book for me. Still, I look forward to more by Maud Ventura.

batsy Intriguing review especially about the ending 😁 I have it on my list. 1mo

batsy @Cathythoughts Yes! Sometimes negative reviews or pans are so interesting in that way, too. Makes me want to read the book 😆 1mo
BarbaraBB I didn‘t see that ending coming! 1mo
Cathythoughts @BarbaraBB I know ! What a way for the book to end. I see your review on it. I have the same boots 😆 I love the way you‘ve styled yours. 👌🏻 1mo
Lesliereadsalot I definitely did not see that ending coming! 1mo
BarbaraBB @Cathythoughts Thank you 😊, what a coincidence we‘ve got them both! They‘re perfect for winter days right?! 1mo
Cathythoughts @BarbaraBB They are perfect , and fun. 👍🏻 1mo
Cathythoughts @Lesliereadsalot Me neither … not a clue. I imagined all kinds of endings, but not that 👍🏻😁 1mo

TrishB Sounds intriguing! 1mo
Megabooks I enjoyed this ending and did see it coming. Interesting to read all these different reactions! 1mo
Cathythoughts @Tamra I agree ! Endings are indeed difficult ❤️ 1mo
Cathythoughts @TrishB It was good … I was hanging in for ‘ the ending ‘ 🙄 it didn‘t impress me 😂 So , sometimes I get obsessed with the reviews and seeing for myself… all part of it ❤️👍🏻 1mo
Cathythoughts @Megabooks So interesting that you saw it coming ! I really did not… But I look back now and see the whole book in a different way. Love this about book discussions. 1mo

Still Missing | Beth Gutcheon

Pickpick

Now , it‘s a dark and difficult book to read. The disappearance of a young child. It reads like a true crime book, suspenseful and brilliantly written. Character development is excellent. The far reaching effects of the missing boy and the psychological trauma is so well done. I loved this book. I‘d love to read more by Beth Gutcheon. Look forward to discussing it all , and the ending. Great book ! #PersephoneClub

LeahBergen That ending! I was so surprised! 1mo
Cathythoughts @LeahBergen I know ! Me too. And they can‘t contact her , And then when she comes upon the scene outside her house and she says this should be the most simple moment of her life.. and the dog running over to him. What an ending ❤️ I loved the ending. 1mo
Caryl I loved that the ending was told from the perspective of Detective Menetti, and then switched to Susan in the last pages. I needed Alex to be found and to come home to his mom. That reunion was so beautiful and sad. 1mo
Cathythoughts @Caryl I agree, Im glad we got to experience Menetti‘s feelings in the ending , and that his son was there too, that brought another dimension to it all. 1mo

LeahBergen @erzascarletbookgasm @batsy Haha! This is one of those books I‘ve bought for numerous friends (along with I Capture the Castle and Fingersmith). 👍 2mo
Cathythoughts @LeahBergen It sparked a LOT of discussion! The woman who recommended it , well she loved it. She had reams of notes and talked at length with great excitement and fervour about it. You could tell she absolutely adored it. We all did like it , to an extent. We score out of 10. We had a 9 , 8 , some 7‘s , and a 6. Ok scores. We have a couple of Scottish gals , so they brought memories and feelings. Great discussion , looking at mothering and 👇🏻 2mo

Morgan , a gorgeous young man of 22, is the MC in this story of the Titanic‘s maiden journey. I loved him ! Beautiful, rich writing, Beryl Bainbrdge created distinctive and memorable characters in this short novel, and some funny scenes. But Morgan won my heart, and his mother too. I thought the mc and her best friend were well drawn characters. I enjoyed the epilogue, it‘s interesting how we look back on friendships in our lives and often see them differently and more clearly. I think of Bob Dylan‘s line
‘Ain‘t it hard when you discover that he really wasn‘t where it‘s at .. ‘
The good writing kept me going until the end , but I felt disconnected from the book. A pick/so-so.

lauraisntwilder Disconnected is a good word for this one. I really enjoyed it, when I read it a couple years ago, but I almost felt like a voyeur. Their lives and mine were so drastically dissimilar. 2mo
Tamra This sounds thought provoking. At least for me, it came as a surprise to discover in adulthood most friendships have seasons. So different than childhood perceptions & expectations. 2mo
BarbaraBB Great review though. I think I felt similar about 2mo
See All 6 Comments
Cathythoughts @lauraisntwilder Yes I really enjoyed it too.. I could identify with being young and all the over thinking and uncertainty of that time. The disconnect was more that I never felt close to the characters at all. Interesting to hear your thoughts 👍🏻 2mo
Cathythoughts @Tamra I know , me too. I suppose we change and our friends change too in different ways … Sometimes we have to let friends go ( that came as a shocker for me I remember) friendships end. But some stand the test of time. Seasons ! As you so wisely say 👍🏻❤️ (edited) 2mo
Cathythoughts @BarbaraBB Interesting! During the first half of the book I thought I‘d be looking up her other books… now I‘m not sure. We‘ll see. I was glad to finish it. 2mo

First book finished this New Year. We only know Alex in her present life … She loves the water and swimming. She is in summer , on Long Island. Her past life can only have been madness, as is her present. She tested my patience and my understanding. Wonderful book. Set in 1700‘s , one can identify with this girls struggle through her life , she is fleeing oppression, she has her hopes and dreams. There is immersion in the world at ground level, sensing it , finding home, finding meaning in the soil the stones. Everything is alive…the girl, the trees, the birds, the pulsing earth. I love Lauren Geoff‘s writing.

I‘m going to take a break from Litsy for awhile.

Another beaut from Celia Fremlin , complete with creepy dolls. Clare Erskines daughter Sarah is engaged to an accountant, Mother is very pleased, at last a solid , respectable lad, or is he ? And is his possessive mother pleased?! Taking an interesting look at mothers influences over their children. Couldn‘t put this down.

Kala: A Novel | Colin Walsh
post image

Loving Kala , the characters growing up..grown up. We move back and forth through their lives. This thriller , this crime book, I could quote so much of it. I‘ll quote one character whose life is kind of ‘ perfect ‘ now , and yet he is lonely

‘ Lonely for the warmth of human imperfection‘

The humanity , characters voices intermingle , fused , their desire to be one , the gang, at times I have to backtrack unsure who is speaking
Excellent book

I enjoyed Miracle Creek by Angie Kim.. and I really enjoyed this new book of hers too. Set during covid ( something that didn‘t appeal to me before reading ) But done in a natural , intelligent way. It worked very well with images and layers of meaning around the idea of masks and isolation. An absolute page turner for me, I sank into the lives of this amazing family, whose son Eugene has autism and angel syndrome. A great mystery story.

Tamra Ohhh, will check out! 😁 5mo

I‘m agreeing with all the other #FurrowedMiddlebrowClub reviews. I enjoyed it ! Yes , the whole Scooby-Doo adventure @batsy 😂. I agree with some it was a bit slow to start , but the start was my favourite part. For a scooby- do , it caused a bit of uneasiness. I love the title of this book , it feels like the cosy blanket covering this cosy mystery with warmth and kindness.

I couldn‘t get a copy of the book. So , kindle it is.
I was very excited as I started this book .. ‘ Thriller of the Year‘ and so it began. I thought it was good , just not what I expected. It turned out differently, more of a thoughtful book. I loved the Scottish island, the weather, the people. A deep reflection on Tommys tragic life. I did enjoy it. I just wanted ( expected ) to be more scared 🙈. A pick 👍🏻 #EuropaCollective

Tamra I‘m happy to see you posting! 😍 Thanks for the heads-up - I won‘t expect it to be a thriller in the scary sense. 6mo

jlhammar Fantastic review! Yes, I‘m finding it much quieter, much more reflective (and heartbreaking) than expected. I‘m nearly halfway through and really enjoying it so far. Some great writing. 6mo

BarbaraBB I wasn‘t expecting as much of a thriller as you did, so wasn‘t disappointed with the lack of excitement. I loved the quietness of the book 🤍 6mo
Tamra The blurb definitely makes it sound like it‘s going to be more of a traditional thriller. It‘s more of an emotional thriller and a bit of an unresolved one at that since Tom‘s memory is questionable. 6mo
Cathythoughts @Tamra Very good point about Tom. Strange ending … strange book, but I enjoyed it. 6mo

Cinfhen Such wonderful picks, Cathy! And so glad you loved Demon! It‘s an undertaking but so rewarding 8mo
Cathythoughts @Cinfhen I thought Demon was brilliant! I‘m exhausted from it , such an intense book. So much to think about. That first attraction to Dori in the shop , when he didn‘t even know her. Daddy's Gone A-hunting | Penelope Mortimer, Valerie Grove
post image
Pickpick

It‘s “ Bye Baby Bunting,” she discovered eagerly. But how sad!
In a little while her lips moved soundlessly, forming words remote and innocent as the melody itself
…Baby Bunting
Daddy‘s gone a -hunting,
Gone to fetch a rabbit skin
To wrap his Baby Bunting in,
Bye Baby Bunting

The 1950s. Life at that time.
I thought the little music box and song so poignant. Holding the themes of the story.
Hauntingly real, beautifully written. #Persephoneclub

jlhammar Lovely photo and review! I agree, so poignant and just stellar writing. 9mo
Cathythoughts @jlhammar ThanksX Yes poignant. I think ‘Daddy‘s Gone A Hunting ‘ rings so many bells for that time , where were the men ? Making a living , very important I know , but so missing in other ways. , and Ruth was such a real character, a time when women were taking ‘acceptable‘ prescription medication just to get through the day. I loved Ruth‘s strong protection of her daughter. 9mo
Cathythoughts @jlhammar Also , just that Ruth asked Rex about his loneliness .. often a lonely set up for man and wife. .. Sorry , Im going on a bit , but I was born in the 1950‘s , so I remember what happened in this time in so many families ♥️ (edited) 9mo

jlhammar @Cathythoughts Great points. It really was a brilliant use of that nursery rhyme - alludes to so much of what was going on at the time. 9mo
Cathythoughts @jlhammar The metaphor of that rhyme goes on and on the more you let it sink in. ❤️ (edited) 9mo
batsy Loved seeing all of your thoughtful reviews of this book. I definitely need to move this up the TBR! 9mo
Cathythoughts @batsy Thanks Suba, I think you would like it 👍🏻♥️ 9mo
LeahBergen What a beautiful review, Cathy. This was such a marvellous read! 9mo
Cathythoughts @LeahBergen Wasn‘t it just !! So good ♥️ 9mo
andrew61 I'm glad you highlighted the rhyme and musical box Cathy, both innocent and sinister. Yes, men don't come off well in 1950s stories. Great review. 9mo
Cathythoughts @andrew61 They don‘t. But I think Ruth was aware of Lex‘s loneliness too … men had their own trials. (edited) 9mo
andrew61 @Cathythoughts Yes Rex is very troubled and this followed quickly on my reading for irl grp The tortoise and the hare Cathy which similarly had a main male character who did not evoke much empathy. 9mo
Tamra Lovely review Cathy - glad you were able to fit it in! 9mo
Cathythoughts @Tamra I nearly let it go for now as life‘s been busy. I‘m so glad I read it now ❤️❤️❤️ 9mo

Girl in Snow: A Novel | Danya Kukafka
post image
Pickpick

This is Kukafka‘s debut book. I had loved Notes on an Execution, and this Girl in Snow is equally addictive. In a Colorado suburb a young girl is found murdered. We listen to the inner worlds of the suspects and the policeman involved. The characters are fascinating and real. I‘ll be thinking about this for awhile as different details click into place for me. A literary thriller of substance. I‘m looking forward to her next book. 💫💫💫💫💫

“Saying these unmentionable things out loud never ceased to horrify her. They were her secrets , battened down so long that they had become almost unrecognisable as the truth. “

Yellowface | R F Kuang

Pickpick

A pick 🤷‍♀️ maybe. I loved it because it was engaging and because it got me out of a major slump. It was a fresh insight into todays world. I felt Junes lonelines , the reaching into the past of personal and historical. The parents ,
fearful of the dark souls of their children, I loved the nuance and balance of this perspective.
But I‘m also left with a feeling I don‘t understand or like. The jury is out 🤔

The Hatter's Ghosts | Georges Simenon
post image
Pickpick

The Hatter and the tailor live directly across from each other in a little French town , with only a ‘trench ‘ like space between them. They see intimately into each others lives. I loved reading the details of their everyday. Here it has been raining since the first body was discovered, now five more bodies have been found in La Rochelle.
Brilliantly told, we enter the unravelling mind of the killer. A page turner for me.

Yoked with a Lamb | Molly Clavering

Pickpick

Well that was a fun read. I think I almost shed a tear at the end too. I enjoyed the second half, far more than the first. The emotional action and intrigue picked up. Lucy is really put down as a villain, but it didn‘t work for me ( aren‘t we supposed to secretly love/hate villains ? ? )
I won‘t say anymore, Darlings! 😂
But I‘m looking forward to a bit of discussion 😁 . #FurrowedMiddlebrowClub

Cathythoughts I still don‘t really understand the title. Does it mean to have a lamb like nature inside us ? 🤔 10mo
batsy Gorgeous photo! I'm almost towards the end, and I also agree that the second half is much better. I was just at the "yoked with a lamb" bit in the book and mulling over the title, as well... Need to have a think. Was wondering if I have to reread Julius Caesar to get it ? 10mo

jlhammar Okay, just finished. Lucy as villain didn't work for me either! It actually really bothered me. Struck me as very unfair. Typical and not all that surprising though, especially for the time. It was all the more troubling to me that a woman, Molly Clavering, chose to write Lucy and Andrew's relationship the way she did. I guess I would have preferred a more feminist slant and some female solidarity. 10mo
Cathythoughts @jlhammar Not surprising for the time , as you say. Yes we want more female solidarity ♥️👍🏻 (edited) 10mo
