#PersephoneClub loving the slow easy pace as we meet Mr. Barlow.

the furniture of his study was , in a manner of speaking , bone of his bone , rigid and fixed in an unalterable pattern, the landscape was breath of his breath. It was alive and full of the endless possibilities of life, just as Mr Barlow, in spite of his seventy-five years , was alive. And life means that nothing is set , nothing is finished, because beyond every end there is alwa

Cathythoughts … because beyond every end there is always another beginning. ♥️ 5h
Cathythoughts @Tamra I missed you in the tags. I have to confess I don‘t know how to copy and paste… so I‘m sorry 😘 5h
Tamra @Cathythoughts can we copy and paste? If so, that would be great! 💙 I hope receive met copy soon. 🤞🏾 4h
LeahBergen @Cathythoughts @Tamra I figured out that you can only copy and paste usernames when they‘re in the body of a message or the post‘s text. You can‘t copy and paste them when you use the Litsy tag function. Sigh. 😆 4h

Master of the Moor | Ruth Rendell
post image

Our MC , Stephen, is a young man living with his wife by the moor. He has spent his life exploring his moor and now writes articles for his local newspaper about the moors ecology. Then the moor murders begin. Stephen is intrigued. Great setting , great characters. Another psychological thriller from Ruth Rendell that I couldn‘t put down.

LeahBergen Sounds good! 👍 1d
Cathythoughts @LeahBergen Yes. I like her style. 👍🏻 5h

The Bridesmaid | Ruth Rendell
post image

An absolute pick for me. A young man living at home with his mum and sisters in London develops an obsession for an unusual girl. And then there‘s their garden statue , Flora , who plays a part in this story. The 70‘s vibe was fun too, I havnt heard the word ‘Fuz‘ for police in years 😆. Great characters , not a lot of ‘Fuz‘ to be seen ,
more the story of love and obsession. Loved this one.

LeahBergen Great review! 👏 3d
Ruthiella Was this a stand alone or part of the Wexford series? 3d

Cathythoughts @Ruthiella Stand alone 👍🏻 3d
Tamra Lol, fuz! Me neither! 2d
Cathythoughts @Tamra I know ! What a ridiculous name for the police 😁, and it was widely used slang. So funny. 2d

Just started this Ruth Rendell and I‘m hooked , hope it continues well 🤞🏻

LeahBergen I know I‘ve read this one but it was many years ago! 😆 6d
Cathythoughts @LeahBergen it‘s a great read 👍🏻❤️ 6d
Cathythoughts @LeahBergen remember the garden statue , Flora ? Then the older bridesmaid ?? Ring any bells ? 😁 6d
LeahBergen Hmm… yes! And I remembered the name Senta after reading the Litsy description. You must try some of the books she wrote under the name Barbara Vine. I think you‘ll really like those, too. 6d
Cathythoughts @LeahBergen Yes , Senta 👍🏻 I must try Barbara Vine too. 6d

This the third book in the Barbarotti series, and another total comfort read for me. Valdemar Roos, 60 years old, decides on a new direction, a secret life in the woods.. An unusual man who keeps us guessing. I cant say much more , spoilers! ( I wouldn‘t even read the blurb, they tell you way too much). I think the picture on the cover sets the mood.

post image

I intended to start The Trees, but decided on a more chilled out read. The third in the Barbarotti series. A very relaxing read. I thoroughly enjoyed the first 2 books. 👌🏻

The Trees , and The Secret Life of Mr Roos
Happy reading all ♥️

It‘s lashing rain outside. I don‘t know how I‘ll get Lisa out , she doesn‘t like the rain and refuses to step out the back door onto wet ground 🙄. I might get a little reading done , these are all Bookclub books. I‘ve only started House in the Country.

Have a good reading week everyone.
Hi Cindy 👋🏻 I‘ve been very slow on Litsy ( but it‘s always on my mind ) life is busier these days. Hope you‘re well X

TrishB Aww Lisa ❤️ my previous dog hated the rain too. Sansa doesn‘t care. Life does sometimes just get busy doesn‘t it. 3w

I‘m a bit late finishing and missed the last part of the discussion, but I thoroughly enjoyed this one. Undine is a great character… even though the book ended , I‘d say Undine has a lot of changes left in her life yet. Constantly grasping for the next best thing she can imagine. Such a superficial existence is frightening.
#Whartonbuddyread @Graywacke @Lcsmcat Thankyou for the discussions and your insights.

Graywacke Congrats on finishing. Sounds like you‘re another reader seeking a sequel. 🙂 3w

I wasn‘t too drawn to the book, but I‘m totally enjoying the TV series. I might not have been drawn to the series either , untill I realized it starred Claire Danes .. of Handmaids Tale. She is such a good actress ❤️

I loved this psychological drama. MC , David Kelsey is seriously stuggling with his grasp on reality. Bizarre, yet written in such a believable way , because it is believable, yet we rarely come upon these characters in real life. Is a deeply traumatised person capable of anything ? Obsession is a real draw for some people. How far they may take it is frightening. Subtle humour too. I‘ll be savouring the P Highsmith‘s books I have left.

Tamra I think I may have only read one of her novels - obviously I need to check out more! 1mo
squirrelbrain You‘re loving this author, aren‘t you?! 1mo
Cathythoughts @Tamra it‘s fairly crazy stuff .. but I love it 😬. I‘m not a big fan of the who done it. I love the why done its. 1mo

Im trying the first in Ruth Rendell‘s Wexford mysteries. I loved the stand alone I read. This book is less complicated, very readable, very believable, real like it‘s actually happening next door ( in the old days ). I‘m loving the details of the time .the immersion heater, the fabric tacked on the kitchen press . . ‘ the police station a concrete box of tricks amid the quiet crowded houses of High Street‘ the overall atmosphere she creates 👌🏻

AmyG Yes! The Wexford books became very comforting to me. I so enjoyed them. (edited) 1mo
Cathythoughts @AmyG Yes ! Very comforting 🥰 1mo

AmyG I so get it. 2mo

A Judgement in Stone | Ruth Rendell

This was great. Suspense, some lovely writing, and I loved the narrator‘s little shocking comments:

‘ No doubt he did. One wonders what Joan Smith would have done with children if she had had them.
Eaten them , perhaps. ‘

You just don‘t expect these random comments , they are so matter of fact, and unexpected!
Loving Ruth Rendell , have ordered more of her books. A good thriller writer. A good writer.

TrishB Not ready any Rendell! (edited) 2mo
EverydayImReading @cathythoughts Great review. It‘s next on my list. I have loved Ruth Rendell for a long time. She never disappoints. She also writes under Barbara Vine. 2mo

I really enjoyed this one too @LeahBergen . It is , as you so beautifully put it , ‘ a moving portrait of a woman‘s life ‘ and I got caught up in the lives of Patricia and her family.

Lots of snobbery and clothes too, playing a big part in this story.
Her dress was …‘ rust trimmed with green and ever such a saucy hat ‘ … ( sounds good to me ! )

I‘ll say no more , no spoilers 👍🏻#PersephoneClub

Tamra 😆 saucy hat! 2mo

“You never forget those days when life blossomed. The blossom fell ; the fruit was gathered; the trees stood bare; but yew them, split them, saw them , burn them, and still about your winter rooms there‘d be the honeyed smell of that dead spring time …”

Nearly finished, really enjoying.

LeahBergen This author was known for writing pony books for children so I was continually finding myself surprised at the loveliness of her writing. 2mo
Cathythoughts @LeahBergen oh that‘s interesting.. makes sense, she loved the horses so 👍🏻 Yes some lovely writing. 2mo
andrew61 Great quote Cathy, this is a book where there are constant short sections of remarkable writing. I have just however left Hugh colliding with a bus !!! @LeahBergen I did notice on searching that her books are very much based in the pony/horse world and so much of Patricia's early life is about her initial wildness and natural skill with horses being tamed into a submissive wife and mother. 2mo
rubyslippersreads @andrew61 @Cathythoughts @LeahBergen I was rooting for the bus. 🤣 2mo

I‘m afraid I‘m bailing. This started off with promice. I was enjoying the different relationships and where they might go… but then the content went more and more out of my reach, and I felt lost in it all. I think it‘s a marmite book. I look forward to the discussion, maybe I will be enlightened and decide to give it another go. ⛺️ #CampLitsy

TrishB I bailed on the first one and I admit I haven‘t started this yet! 2mo
Cathythoughts @TrishB I don‘t know if this one will be for you either Trish 🤔 I‘ll be interested to see how you get on with it. (edited) 2mo
Cinfhen I bailed on the first one too and decided I wasn‘t going to even attempt this one 🤷🏼‍♀️#SoManyBooksSoLittleTime (edited) 2mo

Cathythoughts @BarbaraBB Thanks Barbara, I felt bad bailing , but it wasn‘t making any sense to me 🤷🏼‍♀️. 2mo
Megabooks Sorry you won‘t be joining the discussion but def agree re: marmite! Great thought! 💜💜 2mo
Cathythoughts @Megabooks Thanks X ♥️ 2mo
Tamra 😆 What a great descriptive - marmite book! Though I‘ve never had it, I understand it is one of those love/hate flavors. 2mo

Between a pick and a so-so. I enjoyed the story, lovely descriptions of the circus in Victorian times , but it did go on a bit too long at the end.

squirrelbrain I haven‘t even thought about purchasing this one…and I think it might stay that way! 2mo
Cathythoughts @Squirrelbrain Makes sense , there‘s a LOT going on with the 🏕 -and the Booker 👍🏻😁 (edited) 2mo

I realised this book was going over my head , but I knew too it was brilliant to me. So I needed to Youtube some interviews with the author. Turns out I had no idea what was going on. I found out a lot about the structure of the book. I also am very drawn to the author, his intelligence, his warmth , especially when he tells us of his favourite character in the book , then he becomes a self revealing man . Now back to the book 👍🏻♥️

DivineDiana I love that you sought greater insight! That is one of the reasons I enjoy author talks so much. Stacking this one! ❤️ 2mo
Cathythoughts @DivineDiana Look forward to your thoughts whenever you may get there 👍🏻♥️ 2mo
squirrelbrain Will check it out when I get to the book…. 2mo

Riveting, I loved this book. Psychological thriller, Guy a brilliant young architect meets Bruno on a train, a man obsessed with the perfect murder. Something happens between them. Guys ability to engineer a white bridge like an angels wing. Bruno‘s devil like creepiness. Why does one man murder , why do murderous wars continue ? The questions asked , the brilliance of the writing , the detail, that tomato coloured woollen tie ! Ten out of ten ♥️

LeahBergen Great review! I must get to it soon. 👍 2mo
Cathythoughts @LeahBergen I imagine you‘ll love it. Look forward to your thoughts when you get there 👍🏻♥️ 2mo
Cathythoughts @LeahBergen I started it Sunday and finished it yesterday ( Wednesday) that‘s quick for me , I couldn‘t put it down. Not to mention my kindle went into some ‘ critical error‘ and died right before the ending. 🙄. So I had to get a new kindle and finally read the ending last night. (edited) 2mo

The story of a white South African family , and Salome, the black woman who works for them, who has been promised her own house.
A reread for me , the writing blew me away , powerful book. I‘m so grateful to the author.

‘ In this very room both birth and death have taken place. Long ago , maybe, but the blood is still visible on certain days , when time wears thin. ‘
