What Happened
What Happened | Hillary Rodham Clinton
In the past, for reasons I try to explain, Ive often felt I had to be careful in public, like I was up on a wire without a net. Now Im letting my guard down. Hillary Rodham Clinton, from the introduction of What Happened For the first time, Hillary Rodham Clinton reveals what she was thinking and feeling during one of the most controversial and unpredictable presidential elections in history. Now free from the constraints of running, Hillary takes you inside the intense personal experience of becoming the first woman nominated for president by a major party in an election marked by rage, sexism, exhilarating highs and infuriating lows, stranger-than-fiction twists, Russian interference, and an opponent who broke all the rules. This is her most personal memoir yet. In these pages, she describes what it was like to run against Donald Trump, the mistakes she made, how she has coped with a shocking and devastating loss, and how she found the strength to pick herself back up afterward. With humor and candor, she tells readers what it took to get back on her feetthe rituals, relationships, and reading that got her through, and what the experience has taught her about life. She speaks about the challenges of being a strong woman in the public eye, the criticism over her voice, age, and appearance, and the double standard confronting women in politics. She lays out how the 2016 election was marked by an unprecedented assault on our democracy by a foreign adversary. By analyzing the evidence and connecting the dots, Hillary shows just how dangerous the forces are that shaped the outcome, and why Americans need to understand them to protect our values and our democracy in the future. The election of 2016 was unprecedented and historic. What Happened is the story of that campaign and its aftermathboth a deeply intimate account and a cautionary tale for the nation.

• Early morning here...hopefully can turn at least one page before the baby wakes up again 🤞Reading the book I hesitated to pick up for a long time; just want to get a sense of her writing; not a fan at all. For the record, I didn‘t vote for either HRC or DJT. I think our country deserves so much better than either one...here's looking at 2020 and feeling VERY afraid 😱 •

TheAromaofBooks Agree! I told my husband that the real tragedy of 2016 was that these were the best options we could come up with! 1mo
Readage @TheAromaofBooks Truth!! 👍 1mo
Croissonter This book just reiterated how censored HRC forced herself to be, which made her seem disengaged from the real world and not at all genuine in her campaign. I also got so tired of hearing about “the email” saga. The whole thing was like listening to a political version of a breakup! 1mo

This left me with a mixed bag of emotions - In one hand, I loved the first half in which Clinton provides stories of being a daughter, mother and grandmother which humanizes her in a way that the media suppressed these last few years.

In the other hand, I am still left with questions and wondering what could have happened, what could have been changed, and did we, as a democracy - fail our duty and are now paying for those choices made.

There are some frightening statistics in here about what some people believe, and how much made up news was viewed in social media.....but, there is also a sense of optimism. After listening, I feel a sense of renewed spirit, and a duty to make sure this country rises above our differences. I have grandchildren that will inherit what we leave behind, so I choose to participate in making sure that it‘s something I‘m proud of!

While I would so much rather be spending four years with Hillary than living in this dystopian shitshow, I appreciated the chance to read her thoughts in this intelligent, incisive, thoughtful book. She reveals some personal thoughts but also demonstrates with her grasp of things why she was so qualified. This made my blood boil in places and occasionally caused me to tear up, but I‘m really glad I finally read it.

Riveted_Reader_Melissa I‘ll second all of that! 9mo

Bailedbailed

I like that the author is the narrator, considering the type of book it is. But I overestimated how much I would enjoy reading the many little details of the campaign (including snack choices and the names of many workers/staffers/friends/etc). I think if this book was at least 200 pages shorter and got more to the point of how she (and the country as a whole) lost, I would not have bailed.

First book of 2019! Over a year ago, I had to set this one aside; living in the DC metro area means I'm saturated by the current political climate already, and I couldn't bear to spend my leisure hours swimming in it too. (Even now, the "Election Night" chapter brought me to tears.) But finishing Michelle Obama's book primed me to pick up Hillary Clinton's again, at long last, and let my heart break a little at what could have been.

I expected this book to be more about HRC‘s presidential campaign than outside factors. The book is inconsistently cited and gets a bit conspiratorial, particularly regarding Russian collusion. I disagree with HRC on most matters of policy (and on opinion of flavor blasted goldfish), but this book did provide valuable insight into her experience and values.

Woof. This was a tough read for me. It‘s infuriating in much the same way the year leading up to the election was. How did we get here? I appreciated the time spent reflecting on that question while reading. The book‘s conclusion brings up many of the themes of another book I‘m “sort of” reading at the moment, Brene Brown‘s Braving the Wilderness. We have so, so far to go. #onward

The last US election was one of the most bizarre experiences I‘ve witnessed as an adult. I‘m thankful to do so from the other side of the planet! Such a complex range of factors impacting the end result: foreign interference, domestic interference, cyber security, media, biased media, private information that shouldn‘t have been published and other information that should have. May the world learn from this experience!! An eye opener for me!

JHSiess Nov. 8. 2016 = the most shockingly disappointing night of my life. I don't even have words. It was my mother's 100th birthday & I thought we would be honoring her memory by electing our 1st female Pres. Instead, it was the beginning of a nightmare & our Democracy is in peril. I lived through Watergate. I thought it couldn't ever be worse. How naive. This makes Watergate look like amateur hour. 😢 🇺🇸 1y

That‘s me on Election Day. I came to the office at 6.30AM to guard my trading positions in case the polling went crazy. I was so confident that HRC would win, as confident as I was in Jun‘16 that Brexit wouldn‘t happen!

I remember thinking “Gosh I don‘t know how it feels to be HRC now!” 😞 There‘s nothing new in this book; I think she needed a closure and writing about it helped her to move on. I‘m still with her, and I‘m not even American

LiteraryinLititz Yeah, it‘s hard to look back. I was here in the US on Election Day, and it was a close friend‘s birthday so a few of us took her out to dinner. Even at dinner (East Coast, so lots of polls still open) we were all still sure she would win in a landslide. That‘s how shocking it was later. I started this book but put it down; it was hard reliving it, even though I appreciated her candor in writing it. 1y

I was afraid this book would break my heart. Instead it made me even angrier. Hillary accepts and highlights her mistakes, but there were many other factors leading to her defeat, and she provides an excellent analysis backed by the facts of these. I also liked getting to know her personally—she seems to be a genuinely good person.

Final quote from this book, I promise. This is the overriding question that I have.

JHSiess I have the answer: Conman. 🐷 1y
RaimeyGallant I'm reading a book that helps answer this question: 1y
arubabookwoman @RaimeyGallant Thanks for the recommendation. I read that last month and thought it was excellent! I just don‘t understand how so many people (incl. some I know who are otherwise intelligent) fall for the scam. In How Democracies Die, the authors say that to save our democracy, a lot more Republicans are going to have to grow spines. I see no sign of that happening.😿 (edited) 1y
RaimeyGallant @arubabookwoman It also suggests a long-haul approach where dems meet them in the middle, but how do you compromise on human rights based issues? 1y
arubabookwoman @RaimetGallant And the “middle” has been moved so far over to the right over the last 30-40 years. 1y

Another quote—this one about the role of the media in the 2016 election.

Leftcoastzen Absolutely agree! Most of the media right , left, or middle could not resist the Trump sideshow to the exclusion of all the other candidates!😡👹 1y
SqueakyChu @Leftcoastzen Truth! That made me sick. Ugh! I thought the debates were more like a circus than a thoughtful forum for debate. (edited) 1y
arubabookwoman @Leftcoastzen @SqueakyChu Another thing the book reminded me of that I had forgotten was the “Commander-in-Chief” forum where Matt Lauer spent most of Hillary‘s time grilling her about her emails instead of foreign policy. 1y
SqueakyChu @arubabookwoman Those debates were such a spectacle. There was such a lack of respect among the debaters. The grilling about emails was just a ploy to avoid concentrating on issues and platforms. 1y
JHSiess The only good thing about the debates was the material they provided Sat Night Live. Alec Baldwin st as long Kate McKinnon around the stage was creepily hilarious. 1y

Interesting quote from Hillary‘s book about voting for “change” (Trump) without considering consequences.
