The Arab of the Future 3: The Circumcision Years: A Childhood in the Middle East, 1985-1987 | Riad Sattouf
3 posts | 6 read | 3 to read
The much-awaited third installment in Riad Sattoufs graphic memoirwhich has been translated into fifteen languages and become an international phenomenon The Arab of the Future is the widely acclaimed, internationally bestselling graphic memoir that tells the story of Riad Sattoufs peripatetic childhood in the Middle East. In the first volume, which covers the years 19781984, his family moves between rural France, Libya, and Syria, where they eventually settle in his fathers native village of Ter Maaleh, near Homs. The second volume recounts young Riads first year attending school in Syria (19841985), where he dedicates himself to becoming a true Syrian in the country of Hafez al-Assad. In this third volume, (19851987), Riads mother, fed up with the grinding reality of daily life in the village, decides she cannot take it any longer. When she resolves to move back France, young Riad sees his father torn between his wifes aspirations and the weight of family traditions.

I‘ve decided I love graphic memoirs- you get words and pictures and it just makes different cultures more vibrant. I finally noticed in this installment that the graphics are in red while they are in Syria and blue while they are in France. There‘s more animal cruelty in this one and another situation that‘s pretty bad. I can‘t wait to read volume 4!
I have to shout out to Brown Girl Reading on YT for recommending this!

Have you ever accidentally ended up with the untranslated version of a book? 😳 #whoops #anotherreasoniwishiknewfrench #SFPL

Lacythebookworm Oh no! 6y
Emmadash If it's pictures, you can just make it up as you go along. Right? 6y
UrsulaMonarch @Emmadash I like that solution! With this series I like the author's writing too - so with that & my huge TBR stack, I just returned it & will wait until the library has the English version ☺️ 6y
