Striding Folly
Striding Folly: A Collection of Mysteries | Dorothy L. Sayers
3 posts | 9 read | 2 to read
In his final 3 stories, Lord Peter confronts the greatest mystery of allfatherhood For decades, Lord Peter Wimsey has made life tough for Englands criminal class. In town and country he solved some of the most baffling mysteries of the Jazz Age, facing down killers armed only with wit, charm, and a keen nose for deception. His work brought him 1 great reward: the love of beautiful mystery novelist Harriet Vane. After years of pleading, he has finally convinced her to marry him. Now the real adventure begins. In the final 3 Wimsey stories, Lord Peter confronts land barons, killers, and the terror that comes from raising 3 young sons. Through it all, his clear thinking never fails him, and he solves these last puzzles as successfully as he did his 1st. He may be a family man now, but like good wine, a great detective only gets better with age. Striding Folly is the 15th book in the Lord Peter Wimsey Mysteries, but you may enjoy the series by reading the books in any order. This ebook features an illustrated biography of Dorothy L. Sayers including rare images from the Marion E. Wade Center at Wheaton College.

Three stories featuring Peter Wimsey. These were fun to read with engaging characters and mysteries at their heart. I enjoy seeing how Wimsey relates to the world (including disciplining children in one of the stories). I prefer novels as a way of getting to know characters and trying to solve the mystery, but these were fun, easy reading. Another classic cover!

This was mostly light and fun, although I wished it was longer. It was nice to drop in on Peter and Harriet for a little while. (Caveat that in the last story the discussion about "caning" children was very much of its time and slightly disturbing). Ian Carmichael does a great job with the #audiobook as always.

This collection of the last three Wimsey short stories written by Dorothy L Sayers together with an introduction by Elizabeth George and a fabulous, informative and insightful essay on the relationship between Sayers and her creation by Janet Hitchman is a must for Wimsey completists (and especially Wimsey/Vane shippers) but the casual racism, anti-semitism and defence of corporal punishment is very much of its time and did affect my enjoyment.
