The first half of this book was significantly more compelling than the second half. Regardless, the premise stayed interesting.
There are some fantastic ideas here and a dark, mysterious atmosphere of unease and confusion that reminded me of The City & the City. Unfortunately it lacks the flair and finesse of China Miéville. The foundations of the world aren't solid enough so it never emerges satisfactorily and the characters are straw men swept along by a confused plot
