Laird Barron has shown up in many of the horror anthologies I‘ve read and he‘s won some Shirley Jackson awards for his writing. So big surprise to me that this turned out to be the first in a series of crime novels. We meet Isaiah Coleridge, a muscleman for the mob who likes his mythological references. After losing his job in a spectacular fashion, he gets relocated, and finds new troubles while searching for a missing girl. This was fun. Pick.

So I'm reading the Laird Barron short story collection 'The Beautiful Thing That Awaits Us All' and the story I'm on is about a 1920s mob enforcer and I think "Barron writes hard-boiled crime stories as well as he writes horror" and then today I see he has a hard-boiled crime novel due out next year (the first in a series). Here's a link to his post about it: https://lairdbarron.wordpress.com/2017/09/12/blood-standard-release-date/amp/
