Seeing a Large Cat
Seeing a Large Cat | Elizabeth Peters
8 posts | 25 read | 3 to read
No villain is safe in 1903 Egypt as feisty archaeologist Amelia Peabody embarks on her ninth adventure. According to an ancient Egyptian papyrus, dreaming of a large cat means good luck. And that's just what Amelia Peabody could use, as her growing family matures in the new century. What's more, Amelia's dashing husband Emerson has received a mysterious warning not to enter the Valley of the Kings. To Emerson's annoyance, Amelia's meddling distracts her attention as she exposes a fraudulent spiritualist, saves a marriage, and plays matchmaker. But diabolical forces are at work when an unknown tomb reveals a shocking murder -- and the Peabody family dodges bullets from an assassin determined to put an end to their discoveries.

Pickpick

The plot was a bit convoluted and took a bit to "dig in" but honestly, by now, I am in just for Amelia Peabody, Emerson, Nefret, Ramses, David, Abdul and the rest.
The audiobooks are totally fun.

Ruthiella They are so fun for the personality and growth of the characters. For me, the actual mystery plots are secondary. Or maybe even tertiary, since I also like the historical settings usually as well. (edited) 4w
CarolynM What @Ruthiella said. I love this one for the first look at grown up Ramses. 4w
Smarkies @Ruthiella @CarolynM totally agree. And grown up Ramses is great. 4w

What a pleasure it is, to settle in with familiar characters. I still love Amelia and Emerson, even if I find Ramses and Nefret a little frustrating at times. I'm glad the library copy arrived in time for #cloakanddaggerchristmas and does, in fact, have foil on the cover. (Although, in honesty, I also checked out the ebook and will likely read more of it that way.)

Ruthiella I also find Nefret and Ramses frustrating. One thing I loved about Amelia and Emerson‘s relationship was the absence of all that romance novel will they/won‘t they… 2y
quietjenn @Ruthiella yes! I like my crime-solving couples together by the end of the first book. 2y
rwmg Most definitely. The early Falco stories used to drive me mad in that regard but in those days historical detective fiction was much less common, so I gritted my teeth, which is just as well because otherwise I would have missed out on lots of good things. But these days I suspect I might have just given up and read something else. (edited) 2y

CarolynM I‘m currently “rereading” The Ape Who Guards the Balance on audio. I always find Ramses‘s tortured yearning for Nefret kind of amusing, especially as he doesn‘t seem to mind sharing his favours with other ladies while he pines away😆 @Ruthiella (edited) 2y
Ruthiella That‘s a good way to look at it! @CarolynM 😆 These books are awesome on audio I think. I prefer Barbara Rosenblatt‘s narration, but Susan O‘Malley does a good job too. (edited) 2y
quietjenn @Ruthiella @CarolynM indeed! I am finding them ok in this one, so hopefully that continues. I'll have to try the series on audio. 2y

Ramses is growing up. I'm not sure this is a good thing. It is interesting to get another viewpoint, not just Peabody's
