The Boy Who Harnessed the Wind | William Kamkwamba, Bryan Mealer
post image
Pickpick

I was wind-turbine spotting my entire journey home while reading this the other day. Such a good book!

William grows up in #Malawi, helping on the farm, curious about everything, and with a desire to learn. I don‘t think I‘ve ever read a description of famine from someone who‘s lived through it, the fact that you knew it was coming and could do nothing to avert it. And after, his desire to educate himself, & his persistence to build his windmill.

RachelO Absolutely loved it. A fascinating story well-told. Belated #readaroundtheworld #Malawi, plus #BBRC #GrownUp #nonfiction and #nfnov #booked2019 #booktomovie #nonfiction2019 #aboutsurvival 2d

#readaroundtheworld #SouthAfrica

She had me from the first few pages (TMI in comments) - so much going on in such a short novel. Life as a student doctor in South Africa, trying to work out the path to take against the xenophobia aimed at your flatmate, and Just So Tired. (I thought she wrote tiredness so well!) And that‘s before the horrific event takes place. It‘s written as journal entries- I found it powerful and affecting. Trigger Warnings.

RachelO Matlwa won me over straight away. I lived with undiagnosed menorrhagia (heavy bleeding) for maybe 15 years, just dismissed as standard ‘women‘s problems‘ - I quite simply can‘t imagine being in that situation from the very start. Unsurprisingly, it‘s not a topic I‘ve ever seen written about, but it was very real, very well-done. Big thanks to doctors & med staff who stick with medicine despite the tiredness and hate. 2d
Reggie Sounds good! I didn‘t do the spoiler but still stacked. 1d

Trying to clear the backlog for #NetGalleyNovember.

This was... disturbing!

Silvie accompanies her parents on an experimental archaeology field trip. With her abusive father, it was never going to be an easy week, but things become progressively darker.

I‘ve loved several of Sarah Moss‘s longer novels so approached this with high expectations. Although initially unsure, I was drawn in and it will haunt me for a long while.

TrishB I found it haunting too. 2d

Dear NetGalley folks,

Where do you stand on bailing on ARCs? I‘m trying to clear my initial backlog, and have hit one that I‘m finding really quite icky. I would have definitely bailed by now if it wasn‘t an ARC. I kind of feel I should plough on through, but if I‘m struggling at 30%, I‘m going to be seriously narked by 100%. What do you guys do?

Texreader Bail and explain why. I think that review is just as honest and meaningful as finishing it. 4d
Blueberry If it's disturbing I would definitely quit. If it was only boring I might try to get through 50%. Good luck. 4d
julesG Boring? Skim through the rest of the book, but also say so in your review. 4d
See All 13 Comments
ljuliel I used to review a lot for NG , but not much interested anymore. If I started one that was just really not good enough to complete, I‘d send a note to the publisher explaining why I didn‘t complete it. I think they like honest opinions. 4d
julesG Gah, hit send too early. Disturbing? Bail and explain in your review. 4d
BookwormM You now have an option on NG not to review and you can give reasons why I would bail and do that 4d
sprainedbrain Great question... I have wondered this myself as I‘m trying to clear my initials. @BookwormM - do you know how not reviewing affects ratios? 4d
RachelO @Texreader @Blueberry @julesG @ljuliel Thank you so much for replying- really helpful to see how people deal with these. I‘m going to see if I can push myself to 50%, then decide. I‘m finding it distasteful rather than disturbing (plus confusing and just not-for-me), but we‘ll give it one last try! 4d
RachelO @BookwormM @sprainedbrain I‘d forgotten you could do that - thanks! I have actually done that with one which had formatting issues that made it pretty much unreadable. I think you just ‘lose‘ those percentage points, so your ratio doesn‘t improve for that book, even if you give feedback. 😕 4d
batsy I too have bailed and used that "why you're not reviewing" option to explain why. I'm not clear on how it affects the ratio but I don't mind; can't bear slogging through a book or forcing myself to read something that I find icky/disturbing! 3d
BookwormM @sprainedbrain I was under the impression it didn‘t affect ratio as if you had never had the book I may be wrong 3d
RachelO @BookwormM @sprainedbrain @batsy I bailed. Thank you for the encouragement! It really wasn‘t for me. I did the ‘why you‘re not reviewing it‘ thing - my ratio beforehand was 70% (19 reviewed/27 approved) and it remained the same (19/27) after I‘d hit submit on it, as if I‘d just never got round to reviewing it. Now that I‘m close to the magic 80% mark, I think I‘d prefer to let those extra points go than wade through stuff I‘m finding 😣. Thx again 2d
BookwormM Well done I wish I could take my own advice I struggle through some utter 💩 just because it‘s on the 1001 list 🤣🤣 2d

#bfcr4 went SOOO quickly! This week goals have deliberately gone out the window BUT I‘m taking 2 with me for the rest of the year.

1. Hourly activity- I struggle with working from home/movement/routine, and a focus on these has potential to help!
2. Join a gym for the winter😱. I‘m excited to try out a spin class and give treadmill running a go. (I know. Who even am I?) 👇

RachelO Thank you SO much @wanderinglynn - I‘ve found these challenges incredibly helpful AND gained a network of people who spur me on and don‘t overly mind my grumbling/silly questions. V grateful 💐 4d

I think it‘s time for a #BFCr4 check-in, and honestly? I‘m abandoning my goals! They look like this:

50000/55000 steps 😕
Cut out the afternoon biscuits 🤦🏻‍♀️
1/3 workouts 🙇🏻‍♀️
1 x swim & 1 x Parkrun over 6 weeks 🤷🏻‍♀️.
4 books 8/6 total 📚

BUT on Mon/Tues I was at my desk all day, met 2 deadlines, got over 9 hours of active minutes each day AND made my daily step goal. Which is kind of a breakthrough (even if went to pot on Weds!)👇

RachelO Next week I‘m on my hols, staying with family and living to someone else‘s routine, so I‘m just going to aim for 9 hourly activity wostsits a day, and see what happens. 2w

Continuing Anton‘s upstairs/downstairs look at life in a Grand London hotel in the 1930s. The focus shifts to other characters this time, Nancy‘s anxious younger brother Frank has joined the hotel as a page, Maynard‘s secret is under threat, Helene considers a new romance & wealthy Vivienne may have found her purpose in life. It‘s firmly in the realm of historical fiction, rather than straight-up romance, with the politics of the time 👇

RachelO never distant from the main storylines. I didn‘t love it as much as the first book, but that may be because I read them in such quick succession. And he may have fallen into a couple of relationship tropes, which disappointed me a little. Overall though, an enjoyable read - look forward to the next one! Thanks #readersfirst for the review copy. (edited) 2w

I‘ve just finished Krys Lee‘s short stories of Korea (N&S) and Koreans living in the US. She writes beautifully and her characters are so well-formed, her families & relationships are so messed up & real - when they do something shocking (and they do) you empathise rather than judge.

I may not hold onto every story, but The Goose Father and A Small Sorrow I loved. Drifting House will stay with me a long, long time. Definitely an author to watch.

#NewClassic #BBRC #readaroundtheworld #SouthAfrica

When toddler Dineo falls seriously ill, her older siblings set off on the long walk to find their mother, who‘s working in Johannesburg. This was written to help children understand what life under apartheid actually meant, and I‘m sorry to say I learnt so many things from it. I took particular note of the schoolchildren marching in the streets and striking from school as their learning only 👇

RachelO equipped them to become servants. Naidoo herself regrets that her own schooling as a white South African never encouraged her to think or question or even truly see the situation around her. (edited) 2w

Started this one for #nfnov on an #audiorun yesterday.

Loung Ung starts her story as a precocious , curious, middle-class 5-year old in Phnom Penh. I‘ve realised already how shockingly little I know about Cambodia or the Killing Fields. #TIL that the Khmer Rouge overthrew the Cambodian government in 1975 - that feels so recent. Finished this wonderfully punny audiobook while stretching my legs the other evening. I‘m sure the print would have lots of extra something, with Riddell‘s drawings, but it stood up great as audio-only. Only 2 days late!!

This is my #weeklyforecast - I will review Anton‘s next book before #readersfirst start sending me grumpy emails or decide to blacklist me. Enjoying it so far 👍

And have a 4 hour round-trip by train on Saturday, so Pratchett on audio and Treasure Island!!! as light reading, both physically and mentally (it‘s exceedingly silly!)

Cinfhen Those ARCs are both delightful and torturous!! I try to keep up but sometimes I just fall far behind 🙄😬 3w
RachelO @Cinfhen Yup! My NetGalley heap never recovered from my over enthusiasm when I first signed up 😬📚📚📚 3w
MatchlessMarie @RachelO same. I'm trying to make next month #NetgalleyNovember so I can finally remove my shame 😅 3w
RachelO @MatchlessMarie Glad to know I‘m not alone! It‘s a good idea - I might join you and see if I can nudge my rating up another 5%... 3w

Magslhalliday @RachelO I was booked for all the Sherlockian stuff on the Friday but it‘s been cancelled. Saturday crime panel looks great but I‘ve family commitments. ;( 4w

Just signed up for #nfnov - a #nonfictionnovember challenge hosted by @rsteve388 and @Clwojick - see Cassandra‘s page for the sign-up link.

Hoping to get through one or more of these! (So will probably read something totally different 😁)

Soubhiville “So I will probably read something different 🤣”. I hope you choose something you really enjoy. 4w
RachelO @Soubhiville That‘s pretty much how it works 🤷🏻‍♀️😂😂 Thank you! 😘 4w

Clwojick SOooo relatable. I never stick to a set schedule or stack. 4w
squirrelbrain I also have H is for Hawk and going to sign up for #nfnov, if you fancy a buddy read.... 4w
RachelO @squirrelbrain I would love to! But in all honesty I‘m a calamitous buddy-reader (and bookclub reader and challenge reader) at the moment - I‘m just not getting through things in the right order 😕, then it gets stressful and I read even less, and it gets more stressful 🙄🙄🙄. Sorry! Hopefully I‘ll get on top of things for new year and be up for All The Things all over again! Thanks for the suggestion though 😘😘😘 3w
squirrelbrain Don‘t worry @RachelO - I don‘t want to be the cause of any more stress! 😬 Anyway, I‘m rubbish at #buddyreads too - I speedread and then I‘ve forgotten it all when it‘s time to discuss! 😁 3w
ljuliel I was just reading through some of the posts for the nonfiction month coming up, and was glad to see I‘m not alone when it comes to buddy reads, read alongs readathons , challenges, etc. It‘s weird, but they actually cause me to read less. I think it‘s because I have a hard time putting my reading on a timetable. It stresses me out to stay on task. I‘m not sure why. 🧐 3w
RachelO @ljuliel Exactly that! That rebellious streak! As soon as I *have* to do anything, it becomes less appealing, much more difficult and ooh look at all the other things. Ridiculous, but 🤷🏻‍♀️. Hope you‘ve found some good ideas for #nfnov 3w
ljuliel Thanks. It‘s funny 😂 but I haven‘t even looked up an actual list of books yet. I can‘t even do that ahead of time. I read a lot of NF anyhow so it‘ll be easy to choose but it also bugs me to have a particular stack staring me in the face. Weird I know ....... Good luck to you too. 👍🏼 3w
RachelO @ljuliel Sooooo familiar 😂🤣😂 3w

One Enchanted Evening | Anton Du Beke
post image
Pickpick

So. This was quite a surprise. Granted I‘d gone in with low expectations, but I loved the first half, the plot twist at that point felt a little like ‘and the kitchen sink for good measure‘, but I‘d forgiven everything by the end.

1937. Raymond de Guise is principal dancer at London‘s Buckingham hotel. Nancy Nettleton, the new chambermaid, hasn‘t quite got the hang of being invisible or knowing her place. And everybody but everybody has secrets👇

RachelO From the cover I expected a shiny romance, but the romance is just one storyline. I‘ve seen it compared to Downton, I got more of a Dirty Dancing vibe in places. Du Beke has set this firmly in the politics of the time, the dangers of being open about your identity, the rise of fascism across Europe and the fear of your country going to pieces. An enjoyable read. 4w
RachelO #SnowedIn for #BBRC as there‘s a lot of build-up-to-Christmas in here. #genrebusting for #Booked2019 as it wasn‘t the genre I was expecting. @LibrarianRyan @Cinfhen @4thhouseontheleft @BarbaraTheBibliophage 4w
Balibee146 Interesting.... I can't get the silver lycra suit from the first series of Hole In The Wall out of my head (then later he presented it, no lycra lol). I do like a bit of Anton though 👍😁 4w

RachelO @Cinfhen 😊 That‘ll just leave 10 #Booked2019 books to read before the end of the year. How hard can it possibly be?! 4w

And now onto something completely different!

squirrelbrain Ooh, did you get that from #readersfirst? I haven‘t requested a book on there for aaaages.... 1mo
RachelO @squirrelbrain Maybe... From a while back... (over a year 🤭) I‘m on an ARCs catch-up 🤫 1mo
squirrelbrain Oh, my mistake! There‘s been an Anton du Beke on there in recent weeks but, just checked, and it‘s a different one! 1mo
RachelO @squirrelbrain ...and that could be why I‘m on an ARCs catch-up. I don‘t often request from RF, so was v surprised to receive Book 2, but I really need to get through Book 1 first! 1mo

This is a book I‘m very grateful to have read. Halevi writes as an Israeli Jew wanting to open up a dialogue with his Palestinian neighbours, putting his beliefs and the story of his homeland out there, whilst recognising that the Palestinian narrative is very different. 👇

RachelO I learnt a lot. And, especially right now, his approach seems important - wanting to listen, wanting to find commonalities, appreciating that there is more than one narrative. The last part of the book is from #anotherpointofview, letters from Palestinian readers in response to his book.

#nonfiction2019
1mo
Cinfhen I thought this book was a great starting point and a clear, concise easy to comprehend approach to the Israel/Palestine conflict. I dislike the word conflict because it‘s SO MUCH MORE than a political war/ it‘s about identity and Homeland to two peoples. 1mo
squirrelbrain Sounds very interesting and thought-provoking... 1mo
RachelO @Cinfhen It really was. Coming at it with virtually no background knowledge, it was very readable (and short 😉), but covered so much ground. I think I already had it on my tbr when you posted the other week, but it finally prompted me to read it. 1mo

Heaven, My Home | Attica Locke
post image
Pickpick

Atticka Locke is easily my favourite crime-thriller writer at the moment, and this is the book that‘s finally dragged me out of my reading slump.

Darren Mathews is sent to Hopetown, ostensibly to investigate a missing child. Or maybe to find out more about his white supremacist family. And he has his own reasons for going...

The lake, the blues and the totally messed-up actions of Darren are just so believable. All the stars!

RachelO Thanks and sorry to #netgalley for the late review. 1mo
4thhouseontheleft Pretty picture! 1mo

squirrelbrain I loved the first one in this series (that you gifted to me!) I tried to get this one on #netgalley but it‘s no longer available.... 1mo
RachelO @4thhouseontheleft 🌲🌴🌲 Pixabsy‘s finest 😉! Couldn‘t find anything round here that would quite substitute for East Texas! 1mo
RachelO @Cathythoughts I think you‘ll enjoy these, Cathy - I‘d listened to 2 or 3 of her books on audio, so wasn‘t sure how I‘d handle the move to print. But I was still walking round the house not wanting to put it down! 1mo
RachelO @squirrelbrain ☹️ I would send you this, if it wasn‘t firmly attached to my kindle! 1mo
squirrelbrain @RachelO 🤣🤣 I shall just have to wait until it comes out in paperback, or the library gets it in.... 1mo
KathyWheeler Just for a heads up so I can prepare myself, are Darren‘s actions so reckless that I‘ll be worrying about him the whole time, like I did with Bluebird, Bluebird? 1mo
RachelO @KathyWheeler Entirely possible! He has resolved precisely nothing since Bluebird. I may have yelled at him once or twice. 1mo
KathyWheeler @RachelO okay — I just needed to be prepared for that anxiety. 😊 I called him idiotic several times in Bluebird. 1mo

Week 2 checkin #BFCr4 @wanderinglynn

46000/50000 steps - Ho hum!
Cut out the afternoon biscuits - better...
1/2 workouts - Ho hum again
1 x swim & 1 x Parkrun over the 6 weeks ➡️ Not yet.
2/4 books 🎉🎉🎉🎉

I have FINALLY broken through the reading meh-ness which has been plaguing me for the past 6 months! And I‘m getting a decent amount of work done at civilised times of day. Have also given myself a stern talking to about food and exercise!

RachelO So not perfect, but not bad! 1mo
squirrelbrain Doing good! And I‘m sure the reading breakthrough will lead to other positive things... 😁👍 1mo

Birdsong28 Love the ep where she is learning to whistle and slams the phone down on her friend because her friend can whistle, it's so savage!!! 😂😂😂😂 1mo
SleepyDragon @Birdsong28 That's also the episode in which she tells Mummy Pig that she can whistle because she is very old. Lol My favorite episodes are the ones that involve glitter, and the one where the little kids go to a soft play party. For a cartoon with animals, it portrays parenting rather realistically. 1mo

Technically it‘s maybe more of a comic book than a #NonFictionGraphicNovel but I *think* it‘s in the spirit of the prompt @LibrarianRyan ? It mainly runs as a single narrative rather than random bits and bobs...

A good fun, informative little read covering dinosaurs, fossils, evolution, discoveries, what we still don‘t know and all sorts, mainly told by the dinosaurs themselves!

No #mistymountains here - just hills disappearing behind the rainstorm that‘s heading in this direction. Had the beach to myself this morning- I do like empty winter beaches 👍 May have got a tad wet 💦💦

Organised bod that I am, I actually posted this book onto a friend last week without taking a photo. Travels and descriptions of 16 British mountains 🏔⛰🏔, most of which are misty much of the time!

julesG I miss the seaside. I should move to your part of the world, but Boris is not making it easy. 1mo
RachelO @julesG That would be GREAT! Sadly, probably not the right time 🙁- give us another 10 years and we might be back on track... Hopefully. Meanwhile I‘m planning a trip to Germany - would you be up for a trip to the 2021 Frankfurt book fair?! (Slightly advance planning I know- the UK indexers conference is teaming up with the German & Dutch ones the week before FBF...) 1mo
