Riddle-Master | Patricia A. McKillip
11 posts | 8 read | 20 to read
For over twenty years, Patricia A. McKillip has captured the hearts and imaginations of thousands of readers. And although her renowned Riddle-Master trilogy--The Riddle-Master of Hed, Heir of Sea and Fire, and Harpist in the Wind--has been long out of print, it is considered her most enduring and beloved work. Now it is collected in one volume for the first time--the epic journeys of a young prince in a strange land, where wizards have long since vanished...but where magic is waiting to be reborn.

Lots of false starts on this trilogy. Think the beginning is confusing - too many people, too quickly. After the introductory sections it calms down and improves as it goes along.

Settings It's rather sad. Made me cry a few times. 4y

I loved the world. I thought the hero could perhaps not wander around the wilderness quite so much but I loved the land magic and the realms. I wish that the last third of the book had some of Raederle's POV because she became frustrating in the last part.

If you like LOTR, The Wizard of Earthsea, or the Name of the Wind, check this one out.

So I finished the first book/part and it ends on a cliffhanger. I like it so far but am glad I didn't read The Riddle Master of Hed as a separate book. A lot of shades of LOTR here, which McKillip acknowledges in the intro and I like the way magic and earth intertwine here. Excited to keep going. The second book shifts to a different character and gives a larger view of what the rest of the world thought of the mysterious events in the first.

Just started and really enjoying. This one is full of puzzles and mystery and adventure.

bernadette I can't help but think that Patrick Rothfuss was influenced by Riddle Master. So if you like The Name of the Wind, Riddle-Master is probably a good book to check out. 5y

I was at a library sale yesterday looking in the sci-fi / fantasy section and this guy with a copy paper box full of books sees me take a Robin Hobb. “You like fantasy?” he asks me. “Uh, sure.” He hands me this book, tells me it‘s amazing.
Looked it up on Goodreads and it‘s full of 5-star reviews. Who knew? 🤷‍♀️ Anyone else read this? Looks like a sleeper hit that no one has heard of.

Dragon Never heard of the book or author. Stacking! 6y
emtobiasz I‘ve read a ton of other McKillip, but never made it to her Riddle-Master series. I find her writing very ethereal and her world building based on this dreamy magical tone rather than concrete rules, but when I‘m in the mood for that there‘s nothing better ❤️ (edited) 6y
ErickaS_Flyleafunfurled @emtobiasz Sounds interesting- looking forward to trying this one 6y
JazzFeathers I bought the entire series years ago, but haven't read it yet. McKillip was one of my favourite when l was a child 6y
