Loved it!
Read it twice.
Plot: a novelist stops writing books to write portraits. (It's a spoiler to explain how. ) The main character unspools his built life and builds another; he leaves one deceptively precise job to start a unique project that also requires creative precision. Same person/ new story. Readers find this book engaging & affecting but for very different reasons. It defies review. The author is like a book whisperer, somehow knowing what you need to hear.
A fallen author describing the sound he wants for the room in which he will work. " A background of sound that would change like light during the day, and thus imperceptibly and continuously. Above all: elegant. ... something in which there was no trace of rhythm, but only a becoming that would suspend time, and simply fill the space with a journey that had no coordinates. He said he would like something as motionless as a face that is aging."

Um mich ein wenig von der bevorstehenden Klausur abzulenken, beginne ich nun (endlich!) "Mr. Gwyn".
