Get this: each mystery in this Newfoundland collection features an illustration by a student artist from Canterbury High School in Ottawa, and, wow, they're beautiful. I got a copy last night when the author Mike Martin was in town.

ShelleyBooksie Thank you for sharing this. It will make a wonderful gift for.some people on.my list :) 2w
RaimeyGallant @ShelleyBooksie My pleasure! My mom is hogging my copy right now, because she wants to look through the illustrations. :) 2w

Fabulous author panel at WhoDunIt? Bookstore for the Thin Air Winnipeg writers' festival today. Sherwin Tija (white shirt) has this great #graphicnovel about a woman who is forever falling, no ground in sight, and so she has to relearn how to eat, pee, etc. Find it as Plummet in the Litsy database.

The Missing Sister | Elle Marr

Now for a little bragging: my #OwnVoices critique partner @ellemarr landed a 2-book deal with Thomas & Mercer, and her debut just hit NetGalley. GET IT WHILE YOU CAN! Her cover and synopsis are en route to Litsy. :)

In Paris, Shayna's twin sister has vanished, leaving behind three chilling words: Trust no one. As she gets closer to the truth—and to the killer—Shayna‘s own life may now be in the balance…

ellemarr Thanks for the plug, Raimey! 👭🥳🙌 (edited) 2mo

Holy wow did this take a lot of concentration to get through. It's basically criticism about historical anti-woman literary criticism and literature. It didn't touch on intersectionality enough for my liking, but I'm not docking it points, because it did touch on it, and wherever not referenced, I could assume the intersectional repercussions. The copyright is 1983.

batsy I loved this a lot. The anger, the energy. 2mo

A story about how loss (in this case, the death of a loved one) can lead to the seeking out of community (in this case, a cult), which in turn can lead to radicalization. I wouldn't say this the paciest story I've read this year, but I would say it's some of the best prose, and I'm looking forward to more from this author.

Christine Not the paciest - well said! And agreed, the prose makes me want to read more from Kwon. 3mo

rretzler I wouldn‘t even know where to begin! So many questions! I guess I‘m wondering if he thinks the recent upswing of interest in Golden Age detective fiction will continue. Although, I suppose I already know the answer since he has started publishing the American version of the British Library Crime Classics. There are still quite a few British authors belonging to the Detection Club in the early days whose books have been allowed to go out of ⬇️ 4mo
rretzler ⬆️ print and I‘m wondering what the odds of some publisher picking them up for publication - Anthony Berkeley, GDH and Margaret Cole to name a couple. Glad to see that Penzler is bringing back John Dickson Carr! 4mo

The Kiss Quotient | Helen Hoang

Pickpick

In this erotic romance, a successful woman with autism hires an escort to teach her how to be in a relationship. Hoang created the kind of story dream that's more decadent fairy tale than realistic, and I was addicted from chapter 2. If, like me, you find the first chapter a little shaky, push past it, and, like me, you'll be happy you did.

pythoness As an autistic person myself, I‘m very curious to see how this whole premise is executed, and might have to pick up a copy soon? Hm, hm. 5mo
RaimeyGallant @pythoness The author is, too. :) It feels like a genuine perspective to me. 5mo
pythoness @RaimeyGallant Oh, that‘s good to know! I‘m not usually one for romance novels, but autistic main characters (and, presumably, authors of said characters who are also autistic) are so rare that I‘m very definitely going to have to pick up a copy. Thank you for the info! 5mo

With respect to recs, @bookandcat , I'm def going to The Strand. I'm in the midst of planning a self-guided literary tour, location scouting for my next plot. Any high-priority (1 of 2) 5mo
RaimeyGallant @bookandcat (2 of 2) literary-ish spots you can think of? I've secured tours of a few private/members only libraries already. And I'm going to try to hit Moth Story Slam, some bookstores, NYPL, maybe a few bars/pubs/restaurants that used to be literary hangouts. I'm actually going to a day-long workshop for authors at the FBI, which should be pretty cool, too. :) 5mo
bookandcat @RaimeyGallant def check out the Morgan Library! They have an AMAZING collection (read: Gutenberg bibles. Yes, multiple.) And I *think* you can visit without paying to get into the rest of the museum (I might be wrong). And I also like The Cloisters - very atmospheric. 5mo

I scooped this off of the Man Booker 2016 longlist. A psychological mystery that perhaps, seeing as it's more intriguing than suspenseful, fits better on a historical fiction shelf, if I had to find a shelf for it. Each epistolary element has a unique, engaging voice that feels authentic for the period. The account of the trial was my favorite part, both for the care taken to portray criminal psychology in its infancy and for its subtle wit.

Based on when 492 Sri Lankan refugees arrived in Vancouver in 2010, at a time when Canada's right-wing party was in power. From the perspectives of a Tamil refugee, his lawyer, and the adjudicator tasked with approving or rejecting his refugee status, this story made me think hard about how bendable my morality could become if I needed to protect my family during wartime. P.S. This was a Canada Reads 2018 contender, so it's kind of a big deal.

Hollywood Vs. the Author | Stephen Jay Schwartz
post image
Pickpick

Michael Connelly's essay about Bosch was an eye-opener and so were the rest. The contributors, for the most part, have either (A) turned their back on Hollywood, (B) after much anguish, developed a take-it-or-leave-it attitude, or (C) achieved enough power over their projects or financial security so as to be comfortable telling the truth without fear of repercussions, legal, professional, or otherwise. Continued in comments...

RaimeyGallant It makes me wonder what the book would contain had authors without A, B, or C felt safe contributing. 6mo

A prologue that makes you sit up and pay attention, and then what seem like unconnected POV characters, each with their own truths about life as an urban Native American this many generations into colonization, gradually start to overlap, and then all intersect at a powwow in Oakland for an ending that is beautiful in that shattering, I'm-still-crying-as-I-write-this kind of way.

I'm struggling to write a one-size-fits-all review. I think many will benefit from reading this, because it shows a character arc from denial of their own biases and privilege to acknowledgment. This said, the Turk POV chapters (based on interviews with former white supremacists), while enlightening, are a trigger minefield. Overall, a moving and well-realized story with minor logic issues.

Fave read of the year so far. Just when you think no one could ever find a new way to tell a story, a story like this comes along, and you get addicted to the rhythm of it, and then it's over, and you wish it had twice the number of pages it did. About a young woman being preyed upon by a "renouncer" during the Irish Troubles, and holy cow is it enlightening.

Suet624 I bought this book at Christmas and it sits on my bedside table. I so want to start reading it. And yet I keep being enticed by library books and bookclubs and I just can't seem to get to it. Gah!! First world problem, for sure. I'm so glad to hear how much you liked it. 6mo

Valuable for writers who want to write more descriptively & worth reading for the examples alone. Def new takeaways for me. My complaints: 1) the author, at times, forced quotes about writing into arguments they weren't well suited to 2) I accidentally read an older edition & can't speak to whether the non-woke passages were revamped in the latest.

Since I forgot to take a pic of the book, a little free library I came across this past winter. :)

The philosophy topics addressed in this book, chapter by chapter, are edited transcripts of podcast episodes, and I think some of them could have done with a little more editing for clarity. The farther into the book I read, the less decipherable these modern-day thinkers' thoughts were. My recommendation: read the first half; skip the latter.

Sorry for going dark for a while, folks!

Didn't think it would be possible, but I love this book even more than her debut. It's set a year after the events of The Hate U Give, same fictional neighborhood, different cast of characters. Not only are the story and voice terrific, but through the protag (aspiring rapper Bri), Thomas believably recreates the thought process that goes into writing lyrics, and every time she did, I was like, wow.

This author is so funny! A thorough look at what life was like in 1988 Northern Ireland as a member of a police service with a super high mortality rate. The writing style is a fresh take on hard-boiled detective fiction. The mystery is well-plotted and mostly solvable by the end. He lost a few sensitivity points, but I'm not sure every reader will clock them as such. I will read more of this series.

Essays by Margaret Atwood, Chuck Palahniuk, and Alan Werner are among my favorites. Cool premise: an on-the-run domestic abuse survivor works as a P.I. trying to find missing women. Out-of-the-box red herring. The wrap-up for this, the second mystery in the series, leaves me intrigued about where this could possibly go for book three. Logic snagged a few times, but the plot did make sense.

Through visiting passages of The Great Gatsby at various stages of edit (inc. the back-and-forth between Fitzgerald and his editor), and through accounts of editing processes from other known authors, the moral is that there are many ways to self-edit; authors can use this book to shop for the one(s) best suited to them. Bell also breaks down macro- and micro-editing concerns. I caution taking her advice in the language subset too much to heart.

Because a woman disappears in 1976, her neighbors are forced to think back on the 1967 events that led to the disappearance. When I realized how integral to plot the protagonist's search for God was, I was tempted to DNR this, but ultimately decided that the voice delivered by Cannon made the book worth reading. The voice is stupid good.

Tamra I really enjoyed her distinctive voice in this one! 10mo
Kaye I really loved this on audio. I don‘t DO religious books either. I don‘t really think that‘s what the aim is. I think it‘s more of 2 little girls trying to decipher LIFE and why things happen and for what reasons. If it would‘ve been churchy I wouldn‘t have read it. (edited) 10mo

MarriedtoMrT @shanaqui Yeah, I wouldn‘t call this funny so you should disregard that review! 🧐🤨 10mo
RaimeyGallant @shanaqui I don't really get why it was described as satire. I doubt the author does, either. It's a fairly plausible (if rare) scenario, in my opinion. The narrator is occasionally witty, but I don't think funny is in the top five words I would use to describe the book. 10mo
Reggie @shanaqui This book for me just like some things in real life start out all fun and games but by the end I was quiet with what had happened and how we got there.
