Disney Nature: African Cats
Disney Nature: African Cats: The Story Behind the Film | Amanda Barrett, Keith Scholey
2 posts | 1 read | 1 to read
In the heart of Africa, the Masai Mara Game Reserve is a place where, in place of justice and fairness, raw power rules the day, and to survive means to fight. Lions, cheetahs, elephants, giraffes, buffalo, gazelles, and other large mammals roam the vast, rolling plains of the reserve, and with so many species competing for space and food, the stakes are high, and danger looms at every turn./DIV In African Cats: Kingdom of Courage, filmmakers Keith Scholey and Amanda Barrett follow the lives of some of the Masai Mara’s big cats, focusing on two lionesses and a cheetah and her adorable cubs. This companion book to their incredible film offers a fascinating exploration of the unique, yet interwoven, stories of each cat. Filled with stunning photographs of the Kenyan plains and the remarkable animals that reside on them, this book will take you on an unforgettable journey chronicling the struggle to survive.DIV

This NF book follows a young lion cub, Mara, in her pride. It provides information on lions in the savannah, and what grown lions must do to survive and care for their Cubs. By using this book for PR, EL strategy 2- promote cooperation (small groups) would be applicable. Students can work together by taking turns reading, asking questions, and comprehending the nonfiction text (https://www.readingrockets.org/strategies/partner_reading).

OliviaBuck UDL strategy 2.4- promote understanding across languages also applies to this PR because ELs can be paired with higher level readers who can assist ELs in understanding the text. #ucflae3414sp21 3y
DrSpalding Another book you won in class! Quality nonfiction is very important and partner reading can certainly support English learners. Brief but effective. 3y

This NF picture book is based off of the disney feature film! I would use this as a read aloud to share before watching the film. To implement teaching skills, I would have this lead into a science lesson about the food chain or geography lesson focusing on animals in different parts of the world. https://www.edutopia.org/article/connecting-math-and-science-reading-and-writing #UCFLAE3414SP21

Emiranda UDL 5.1 is used when showing the film to add a multimedia aspect to the lesson and engage students. EL 15 is used when you repeatedly expose the students to the same information, but in different ways. 3y
DrSpalding The resource is excellent! Using quality nonfiction in the content areas is important. Reading is not just meant to be done during English language arts! 3y
