This HF book is great for IR. Students are able to learn about the first Olympic game. While reading this book, students can monitor their progress (UDL 6.4 enhance capacity for monitoring progress) by completing questions throughout. The teacher can also monitor students‘ comprehension by periodically reviewing the students‘ answers to these questions. (EL strategy 6- continually monitor students‘ comprehension)

OliviaBuck With this resource- https://www.brighthubeducation.com/lesson-plans-grades-1-2/61902-the-hour-of-the... students can be given ideas of questions to answer, and activities to perform to check their progress. #ucflae3414sp21 3y
Mmurphy Loves this series!! Great job! 3y
Nrossi Absolutely love these books and all the lessons that could be tied in with them. 3y
DrSpalding The magic treehouse… These are considered modern fantasy but you are right that there is some historical content specifically in this title. Your resource is a good one but realize that the author has her own site for these books and you don‘t get better than the author/publisher. Be sure to check your genres and expand on the book summary. 3y

This TL book is a great way to introduce (or reintroduce) traditional fairy tales to students. It puts a humorous twist on stories such as The Ugly Duckling and Little Red Riding Hood. This is a great book to use as a RA over several days, since there are several stories within. https://www.crayola.com/lesson-plans/stinky-cheese-man-lesson-plan/ is a great resource to review, because it allows students to use their creativity...

OliviaBuck ...to draw the plot of each story. EL 14- simplify your speech by making it slower and redundant aligns with this book because it is easy to adjust your voice and tone to fit each story. UDL 3.1- activate or supply background knowledge applies because students may already be aware of the TL these stories come from. #ucflae3414sp21 3y
Blueberry Jon Scieszka and Lane Smith 💙 3y
KeanaE Wow you have brought me back! I totally forgot about this book, thank you for reminding me. Buying this 3y
DrSpalding Read aloud- yes ...Crayola resource- yes… Your English learner and universal design principle work well. You would definitely want to use this in the upper grades after students are very familiar with the original tales. 3y

This RF novel follows the journey of a daughter and father who have an anything but ordinary relationship. Along their journey they meet several people, who all have an impact on Coyote. This novel is great as a LC book, following the objectives of http://www.readwritethink.org/classroom-resources/lesson-plans/literature-circle....

OliviaBuck EL strategy 2- promote cooperation (small groups) aligns with the LC. UDL 6.4- enhance capacity for monitoring progress aligns with students meeting with their LC each week to discuss the book. #ucflae3414sp21 3y
Mmurphy Definitely hav to read this one in the future!! 3y
DrSpalding You need to expand a bit on your summaries. I agree that this book is an excellent book club or literature circle option. I also like the idea of reading it aloud. This is a current Sunshine State book on the grades 6-8 list. 3y

This MF, SEL book is a great addition to any classroom. It focuses on the emotion of sadness, which is often a touchy subject. By introducing this book into your classroom, you are creating a positive and welcome place, where students can feel comfortable expressing their feelings. A RA is a great way to read this book, because you can make it interactive with your students.

OliviaBuck This PDF provides tips on an interactive read aloud alongside this book https://teachersandwritersmagazine.org/wp-content/uploads/2017/02/v45n02p04Levis.... UDL 9.2- facilitate personal coping skills and strategies aligns with this book, as does EL strategy 18- use commands and directions that involve overt student actions in total physical response (TPR). #ucflae3414sp21 3y
Chaseb I‘m really trying to find good books about emotions to have in my classroom, so thank you for this recommendation! I think this book would be very useful for teaching kids about emotions and what we do about them. I think you noted the perfect UDL principle for the book! Good job! 3y
DrSpalding Universal design principle 9.2 is perfect for books like this that focus on social emotional skills. You must go back and add your link to your published lesson plan for this book! 3y

This beautifully illustrated P book is great for incorporating ELs into PR. Since each poem is also offered in Spanish, this gives a chance for EL students who speak Spanish to comprehend the story better, since they can see it in English and Spanish side by side. This aligns with UDL 2.4- promote understanding across languages.

OliviaBuck By providing a book in Spanish as well, it aligns with EL strategy 24- incorporate the culture and the language of second language learners in your curriculum. After students have finished with PR, they can work together to complete a cross word puzzle with the vocabulary from the book https://www.rif.org/literacy-central/material/flutter-and-hum-aleteo-y-zumbido-a.... #ucflae3414sp21 3y
DrSpalding Your images are simple yet very effective. You have selected an excellent resource here with the RIS website. Continue to use this in the future. English learner strategy 24 is excellent! This was one of the books you won in class and I agree that partner reading would be perfect! 3y

This SF book can be used as a whole class RT, using the script from https://www.skippyjonjones.com/downloads/Skippyjon-ReadersTheater.pdf. This is a great book for EL students as well since Spanish is incorporated into the text; aligning with El strategy 24- incorporate the culture and language of second language learners in your curriculum. The incorporation on Spanish also aligns with UDL 2.4- promote understanding across languages.

Chaseb Absolutely love this series! I love your creative picture!! 3y
Mmurphy LOVE THAT PICTURE!! So cute!!!! 3y
ReaganT That book looks super interesting! The cute cat helps haha 3y
DrSpalding Your peers enjoyed your picture! Your kitty is quite special! This would be considered modern fantasy rather than science fiction. Remember to look back at your genre quick guide for help with how to classify your genres. You do not have any summary but do lead nicely into the idea of readers theater which would work quite well! 3y

This MF, Blue Peter Best Picture Book To Read Aloud award winner is a beautiful story about a mouse who is clever enough to scare away predators, even the Gruffalo! By performing a RT (http://www.grandviewlibrary.org/archives/2004/12/readers_theater.html), students can build fluencies with graduated levels of support for practice and performance (UDL 5.3).

OliviaBuck EL strategy 16- integrate speaking, listening, reading, and writing activities aligns with this RT because EL students are offered support to participate in the reading of this book. #ucflae3414sp21 3y
DrSpalding Olivia, you truly understand how to align English learner and universal design principles to the excellent books you have selected for this project. I am so happy that you like readers theater as a teaching strategy and hope you will use this with your future students. 3y

Pickpick

This Caldecott Award winning MF story is great for boosting students imagination. As students listen to the RA, they can begin to use their imagination to think of how Max is experiencing the place where the wild things are.

OliviaBuck This story follows a pattern of traveling to where the wild things are, becoming their king, and traveling home, which aligns with UDL 3.2- highlight patterns, critical features, big ideas, and relationships. EL strategy 6- continually monitoring students comprehension also aligns with this RA because the teacher can pause to ask questions, allowing to monitor how students are comprehending the story. 3y
OliviaBuck Teachers can also use strategies from https://www.readingrockets.org/article/reading-aloud-build-comprehension, such as pausing to make connections. #ucflae3414sp21 3y
Mmurphy Love your UDL strategy it is so important to see the main picture in this book!! 3y
KeanaE Such a classic! 3y
DrSpalding Again, you need to be sure to highlight what the book is about however you are identifying wonderful, quality resources and expanding on your English learner and universal design principles. This book is a true classic and should be part of your classroom library. 3y

This NF book follows a young lion cub, Mara, in her pride. It provides information on lions in the savannah, and what grown lions must do to survive and care for their Cubs. By using this book for PR, EL strategy 2- promote cooperation (small groups) would be applicable. Students can work together by taking turns reading, asking questions, and comprehending the nonfiction text (https://www.readingrockets.org/strategies/partner_reading).

OliviaBuck UDL strategy 2.4- promote understanding across languages also applies to this PR because ELs can be paired with higher level readers who can assist ELs in understanding the text. #ucflae3414sp21 3y
DrSpalding Another book you won in class! Quality nonfiction is very important and partner reading can certainly support English learners. Brief but effective. 3y

This inspirational B book is a great addition to any classroom. It includes 20 influential women- such as Greta Thunberg and Zaha Hadid- and the impact they‘ve had on the world. This book of diverse women can be used to motivate the young girls within our classrooms to follow their dreams.

OliviaBuck A RA is a great way to introduce this book into the classroom, using strategies from http://www.readwritethink.org/professional-development/strategy-guides/teacher-r.... UDL 8.1- Heighten salience of goals and objectives aligns with this book because of the goals it can inspire students to reach. EL strategy 28- Provide biographies of significant men and women from different countries also aligns with this book. 3y
OliviaBuck ^ Because the diverse group of women come from around the world. Over all I think it is a great addition to everyone‘s classroom library! #ucflae3414sp21 (edited) 3y
Ericaj This book is great to use for Women History Month. Teachers can do a read-aloud with this book, and students write a mini paragraph on one of the famous ladies. 3y
DrSpalding Love picture book biographies that include a bunch of wonderful individuals for children to be inspired by. English learner strategy 28 is absolutely perfect and you selected another high-quality resource. Well done. Remember that with anthologies like this, you can dip in and dip out of the text. 3y

This is Not My Hat is a great MF book to teach students about honestly, good decision making, and inferencing. During a RA, students can stop and discuss with one another what they infer is going to happen next in the story; aligning with EL strategy 10- teach think, pair and share strategies in cooperative groups. After reading the story, students can work to create their own ending of what they believe happened to the fish, using this resource:

OliviaBuck https://www.gradeonederful.com/2019/04/this-is-not-my-hat-book-review-lots-of-ac.... UDL 8.3- foster collaboration and community aligns with this activity because students will be collaborating with one another to discuss what they believe happened to the fish. #ucflae3414sp21 3y

Harry the Dirty Dog is a MF book about a dog who enjoys getting dirty! Throughout the story, we follow Harry on his journey to playing in dirt. We also see Harry‘s problem solving skills when his family doesn‘t recognise him! A great activity to incorporate is a RA, followed by sequencing the events of the story through seesaw (https://app.seesaw.me/activities/closos/sequence-harry-the-dirty-dog).

OliviaBuck UDL 5.1- use multiple media for communication pairs great with this activity since students are offered an online source to record their voices! This provides students with a different setting, and breaking away from the standard writing activities. EL strategy 16- integrate speaking, listening, reading and writing activities also goes well with this activity, since students can hear the story being read, and speak rather than write their response 3y

Rooster‘s Off to See the World is a great MF math book to add to you classroom library. A great math activity (https://www.scholastic.com/teachers/lesson-plans/teaching-content/roosters-see-world-lesson-plan/) can be used to count and follow the timeline of the story, accounting for all of the animals joining the group.

OliviaBuck UDL 3.2 can be emphasised to highlight patterns, critical features, big ideas, and relationships within the book. EL strategy 42- have students use timelines to arrange and sequence important facts and information can also be used alongside this book and activity. #ucflae3414sp21 3y

Dear Girl, is an amazing #1 New York Times Bestseller RF and P book. Being written as a letter brings it a poetic and touching feel. This book is full of positive words to all girls, teaching them about self acceptance and self reflection. It also connects to the book Dear Boy, which I would suggest reading together as a RA.

OliviaBuck Using this RA from the author https://www.amykrouserosenthalfoundation.org/book-activities#..., students can group together and compare and contrast the letters written in each book. EL strategy 3- encourage self talk will fit perfectly with this book, as students are being encouraged to relate the the book. 3y
OliviaBuck UDL 9.3- develop self-assessment and reflection also fits well with this book, as students can reflect with one another what they have learned from this book, and how it relates to themselves. I absolutely loved reading this and suggest adding it AND Dear Boy to your classroom library! #ucflae3414sp21 3y
DrSpalding 10 stellar posts noted! You are summarizing the book, selecting appropriate teaching strategies and finding helpful resources that you can align with English learner and universal design principles. Very well done. If you have yet to do so… Look into this author a bit more! Sad but also inspiring! 3y
DrSpalding Another quick note… I just bought Dear, Teacher! I created a video read aloud for my seniors and shared it last Friday. This is a wonderful series of books! 3y

Big Words for Little People | Jamie Lee Curtis

Big Words for Little People is a fun RF book to use as both a RA and PR. This book can enhance students‘ vocabulary because it is full of new big words! After performing a RA or having PR, students can pair up and use this synonym sheet (https://www.lessonplanet.com/teachers/big-words-for-little-people)to compare the words within the book, to words they previously knew; which will have them activate their background knowledge.

OliviaBuck UDL 2.1- clarify vocabulary and symbols works well with this book because students are clarifying the vocabulary terms by reading the book and completing the synonym sheet. EL strategy 11- place language in meaningful context also works well with this book. #ucflae3414sp21 3y

This MF, Caldecott Honor picture book is great for RT in the classroom (Script https://aroshiblog.files.wordpress.com/2017/02/choral-reading-cowsthattype1.pdf ) Students can take turns reading for each character, and reading out the onomatopoeia within the book. Another strategy for this book is CR. Each time the teacher reads “click, clack, moo”, the students can repeat after the teacher, enhancing their fluency.

OliviaBuck EL strategy 14: simplify your speech by making it slower and redundant, fits perfectly with this book and activity. During the choral reading, EL students have the chance to hear the words being spoken slowly and repetitively, allowing them to repeat the words back. UDL 5.3- build fluencies with graduated levels of support for practice and performance also fits with this book because students are given the chance to practice their fluency. 3y

Waiting is Not Easy is another great MF, SEL book that won the Theodore Seuss Geisel Honor! Including this book in your classroom would be a good way to teach students about patience, and the benefits that come out of being patient; as shown in this book. A great resource for this book is this PDF https://education.byu.edu/sites/default/files/buildingsocialskills/Waiting-is-no....

OliviaBuck After reading with your students, you can have them patiently wait for a surprise you will give them (explained in the PDF), and have them explain how the waiting makes them feel. EL 3 aligns with this book because it encourages self talk from students, and helps them to positively think about how they are feeling. UDL 9.2 aligns with this as well because it can help facilitate personal coping skills and strategies. 3y
OliviaBuck Overall, I think it is extremely important to have SEL books available to your students, and this is a great option! #ucflae3414sp21 3y

Don‘t Feed the WorryBug is a great MF, SEL book to have in the classroom. It teaches students what worrying is, and how it can affect them if they let it control them. This book can help to create a positive classroom that promotes building students emotional awareness. The worrywoos.com website has a multitude of both at home and in the classroom resources to include this book in your lessons.

OliviaBuck It can also be used to teach students to seek out key details within the text. Students can turn to one another during RA and discuss what Wince is worrying about, and how the WorryBug is affecting him. This strategy aligns with EL strategy 10: teach think, pair, and share strategies in cooperative groups. This book can also help students facilitate personal coping skills and strategies (UDL 9.2) when dealing with worrying feelings. 3y

All Are Welcome is a wonderful book for inclusion and diversity in the classroom. This can be beneficial for the first day of school to represent the differences in each student, and to help make these differences feel welcome. This is also great for incorporating social-emotional learning!

AlexRobinson Olivia what a great book! It‘s crazy to think about how not non-inclusive our books were growing up (how characters looked the same, not a lot of minority representation, etc) so these newer type of books with the crucial meaning of “everyone is different and thats okay” I think are pivotal to have in our classrooms! 3y
