He tarries with the captivating Babka before the driving desire to return to his family in Russia overcomes him. Babka clothes him in the uniform of a deserter, but he is captured again and this time his false identity cannot help him...

I loved the first section, but found the machinations of German forces tedious. The end was compelling.
