A barreling blast through a ghost (“smoke”) ridden LA with two compulsively readable antiheroes at the forefront, “Smoke City” may be a bit repetitive with presenting its themes and scenarios, but this road trip and flashback heavy novel had me cackling and in awe of Rosson‘s inventive ideas and satisfying intertwining of narratives.

If you want to read about an alcoholic ex-painter, a wannabe ghost hunter, and a reincarnation of Joan of Arc‘s executioner going on a road trip together, then you should definitely read this book.
Thought for sure this would make the TOB long list AND IT DID NOT 😮 Now, perversely, I feel I must read it. So Dear Reader, I bought it. I first heard about it on the 9/11/18 @ReadingEnvy podcast as recommended by @Booksndogs . Sounds absolutely bonkers in a good way!

Small press discovery! Reincarnated executioner of Joan of Arc and alcoholic formerly-famous painter go on a redemptive road trip to ghost ridden L.A. Story goes back and forth in their lives. Deep thoughts yet still a hint of a Hunter S Thompson vibe. Sounds like it can‘t work, but it does, thanks to great writing. Book cover gives you an idea . Loved it, as my sticky tabs attest!
