The author trekked the same route as a byzantian monk back in 1994 & wrote this entertaining travelogue abt it. 1 of the main msgs of th book is: Christians have existed in th Middle East 4 a long time, & variety was the spice of rel. life back in th day. Th mix of travelogue, history & anecdotes is perfect. Particularly the chapter on Syria is sad 2 read from my modern pov. More history than religion, so even us not so religious ppl can enjoy it.
