A quick YA read that reminded me of Shakespeare in Love. It would be a great introduction to Shakespeare for a middle school kid. Widge is an orphan who has yet to find a kind family. He is tasked with stealing a script of Hamlet and discovers a love of acting instead. There‘s a quick pace with a few twists and it‘s an easy read. I‘d recommend for 5th or 6th grade.

I read this several times when I was younger and loved it, so I decided to see if it held up now that I‘m an adult. For the most part, yes. It‘s still an enjoyable story with memorable characters. Now that I know more about Shakespearean London, though, I wonder if Blackwood took a few too many liberties with historical accuracy. But overall, it‘s still a fun read that I highly recommend for middle grade students.

I read this over the summer with my teenage son. He had to read it as summer assignment work. Interesting read, for sure a teen read. Good but hard to follow in places because of the era of the language but I believe that was the point of the assignment.

This book about theater in Shakespeare's day provides a great introduction to that time, along with suspense that keeps the plot moving, and lessons about honesty and friendship in a world where people play roles on and off the stage.
