The Hidden Reality
The Hidden Reality: Parallel Universes and the Deep Laws of the Cosmos | Brian Greene
9 posts | 9 read | 19 to read
From the best-selling author of The Elegant Universe and The Fabric of the Cosmos comes his most expansive and accessible book to datea book that takes on the grandest question: Is ours the only universe? There was a time when universe meant all there is. Everything. Yet, in recent years discoveries in physics and cosmology have led a number of scientists to conclude that our universe may be one among many. With crystal-clear prose and inspired use of analogy, Brian Greene shows how a range of different multiverse proposals emerges from theories developed to explain the most refined observations of both subatomic particles and the dark depths of space: a multiverse in which you have an infinite number of doppelgngers, each reading this sentence in a distant universe; a multiverse comprising a vast ocean of bubble universes, of which ours is but one; a multiverse that endlessly cycles through time, or one that might be hovering millimeters away yet remains invisible; another in which every possibility allowed by quantum physics is brought to life. Or, perhaps strangest of all, a multiverse made purely of math. Greene, one of our foremost physicists and science writers, takes us on a captivating exploration of these parallel worlds and reveals how much of realitys true nature may be deeply hidden within them. And, with his unrivaled ability to make the most challenging of material accessible and entertaining, Greene tackles the core question: How can fundamental science progress if great swaths of reality lie beyond our reach? Sparked by Greenes trademark wit and precision, The Hidden Reality is at once a far-reaching survey of cutting-edge physics and a remarkable journey to the very edge of realitya journey grounded firmly in science and limited only by our imagination. From the Hardcover edition.

Physicists get feisty when it comes to multiverse theories!

The above is probably the most coherent explanation I can give. I can (just about) follow (some of) the theory while reading but accurate, detailed retention is always going to be beyond me. Nevertheless it is absolutely fascinating and Greene manages to cover 9 multiverse theories for the general reader with great clarity and without patronising or overwhelming. The multiverse(?) is incredible and so are the minds striving to understand it.

Suet624 I HAVE to find this book. 7y
minkyb I'll take your word for it 😜 7y

Uh-oh... 😣

Robothugs 😳 I believe in you. 7y
saresmoore Ha! Lordy. Worth it? 7y
Moray_Reads @saresmoore definitely worth it and he'd laid the groundwork so well that after the first couple of pages (had to read them twice to really get to grips with them!) the chapter wasn't as difficult as I feared 7y
Moray_Reads @Robothugs thank you 😘 I made it to the end and it was definitely worth the inordinate brainpower I had to use! 7y

It's a sad fact that every time Brian Greene uses this phrase in his fitness I laugh and skip back to the main text. What's the opposite of mathematically-inclined? 😥

mcipher Me!! I am the exact opposite. 😂 7y
Moray_Reads @mcipher me too! But I do appreciate the fact that he keeps the really nitty-gritty stuff out of the main text otherwise I'd have had to give up ages ago 7y
mcipher Let's call us the literary inclined. 👍That's awesome, it must make the book so much more accessible this way! 7y
Moray_Reads @mcipher I'll definitely take that. It's very well done, scientists who can understand all that complexity and still explain it (mostly!) for general readers are a marvel 7y
DeborahSmall Was just going to say I'd be described as the opposite!! 7y

Well, what do you read when you wake up at 3am with a raging sore throat? Hoping some honey and lemon tea and some Superstring Theory will put me back to sleep!

mklong If that doesn't do it, I don't think anything will. I'm tired just reading that! 7y
saresmoore Boo! Hope you feel better very soon and get some rest! 7y

I reluctantly bailed on this several months ago when it was recalled at my library. I'm finally getting back to it and I'm hoping I can pick up where I left off rather than starting from scratch. I hope my physics wheels and cogs aren't too rusty...

charl08 Good luck! 7y

At times I find Greene's "real world" metaphors and examples a little tedious but snippets like this are incredible. It's almost a shame that digital TV has removed this problem!

saresmoore This blows my mind! 8y
Moray_Reads @saresmoore isn't it incredible? Just finished the explanation of how the universe(s) are theoretically finite, infinite and expanding at the same time and now my brain needs a rest! 8y
saresmoore Oh, I love it! 8y

I really fallen down on my science reading lately so it's time to get back to this one. A couple of hours of physics before I turn my light off...

My #BookishPetPeeve is the plastic cover-savers on library books. I know they serve a purpose but I HATE them. That goes double for hardbacks because I can't even take them off while I read! #MarchIntoReading

AlaMich I actually like those. I've always loved the sound they make while I read, since I was a kid. ETA: i mean the ones on hardcovers, that make the crinkly sound. Not the ones on paperbacks 🙁 (edited) 8y
Moray_Reads @AlaMich I hate dustcovers too and take them off while I'm reading. There's just something about those flaps and extra edges that I hate! 😂 8y
AlaMich @Moray_Reads Illogically, I DON'T like dust covers on hardcovers I buy. They are annoying. But that crinkly sound and feel...I dig it! 😊 8y
Moray_Reads @AlaMich It obviously calls to that memory in your childhood, I can understand that 😊 8y
hollytucker Amen to those plastic covers. Ick 8y
