My current view of Diagon Alley as I hold the bags and wait for my family on the ride! I can squeeze in reading time anywhere. My current read is a reread of Northanger Abbey and Jane is not pulling any punches.

ALSO, I‘m sitting on the steps of Gringott‘s, on the roof of which a fire breathing dragon is perched—I can feel the heat from its periodic roaring flame!

saresmoore @BarbaraBB They‘ve done such a fantastic job. Every tiniest bit of the design and architecture is intentional and Rowling was heavily involved. Flourish & Blott‘s through Knockturn Alley is one of my favorite parts. 1d

I‘m enjoying some peaceful reading time inside this morning because it is chilly out there! The book is just okay. I devour all of Rainbow Rowell‘s books because I love her characters, but they almost invariably end up being just okay for me. I‘m #TeamBaz for sure. 😆

saresmoore @Megabooks Yes! She‘s so unapologetically, awesomely Penny! 2w
ReadingEnvy I just heard about this one the other day. Do you think you need to read Fangirl before Carry on. 2w
saresmoore @ReadingEnvy Not at all. I don‘t remember much of the fanfic details from Fangirl, but I think Rowell gives them a life of their own, anyway. It‘s fun to read Carry On as its own entity with a cheeky (if obvious) nod to the chosen one & fantasy tropes. 1w

❤️ Coastal North Carolina, USA
🧡 33
💛 This year, I‘m reading from my home library; my work is mostly domestic, volunteer, and child-centered with a dash of aspirational writing
💚 Married for 12.5 years
💙 she/her
💜 My best friend‘s nickname for me, Sar (rhymes with Tsar), my middle initial (E), and a combo of my maiden name initial (S) with my married name (Moore) which evolved into our family nickname of “S‘Moores”

#gettingtoknowyou

LeahBergen I had always assumed that “Sares” was a diminutive nickname for Sara. 😄 1mo
saresmoore @LeahBergen My best friend‘s name is Samantha and I was always so envious of all her potential nicknames. She obligingly came up with Sar when we were about 8 and she‘s called me only that ever since! 1mo

This month is all about the spooky reads and #audiocrochet! I finished Gideon the Ninth, which was AMAZING and did a reread of Rowell‘s Carry On, which was even more cheesy and delightful the second time around. Now I‘m listening to the tagged book and enjoying this cooler weather. I ♥️ autumn.

saresmoore Crochet projects: fierce purple dragon (gift for Elliott); geometric Hufflepuff colored blanket (gift for Lucy); boho scarf (for me); completed wildrose backpack (originally for me, but which Elliott claimed and Lucy requested a duplicate of 😂) 2mo
Sace I love the backpack! Is the hufflepuff blanket your own design? It looks neat! 2mo

So far, the conversations of my fellow attendants in the waiting room of the outpatient surgicenter have been much more interesting and revelatory than this book. So many good reviews from trustworthy readers! How did you guys get past the vaguely cryptic, narcissistic tone? #NYRBBookClub

batsy Interesting! Not quite sure how to answer that because I didn't feel like I had to struggle to get over the tone; on the contrary, I enjoyed it 😁 2mo
saresmoore @batsy I‘m not sure why it‘s bugging me so much! Maybe because it reminds me of going back and reading my own journals—not that anyone would publish those—it just feels myopic and snobbish, not unlike my own musings. 😆 2mo
LeahBergen I didn‘t get past the tone. I bailed and I NEVER bail. 😬 2mo
See All 8 Comments
MicheleinPhilly I can‘t comment on the book because my slacker behind didn‘t read it 😬 but I hope everything is OK healthwise. ❤️ 2mo
BarbaraBB I hard a hard time ignoring that tone indeed. 2mo
Billypar I think I was a little tone-deaf as a reader 😳 It was tough for me to describe, so I'd agree with 'cryptic'. I feel like the narrator was the character I learned the least about, and I don't know if that was intentional, or if I just didn't give it a close enough read. 2mo
batsy @saresmoore 😆 Yes to the flashes of snobbery; it definitely showed itself in parts. I guess myopia and self-absorption are going to be present in any first-person narrative, but books like this tend to be so subjective because of the tone ... It's either one gets on the with the voice or one doesn't. So I totally understand not being able to push past the tone if it's not speaking to you, so to speak 🙂 2mo
Suet624 The beginning was tough and then I started to appreciate her grumpiness. 2mo

Reading this was somehow both indulgent & deeply satisfying. It was in turns lighthearted, unsentimental and emotionally raw. I am impressed by how far ahead of her time Colette was. I felt utterly transported into a view of the world, of Paris, that I‘d never considered. All of the characters are unlikeable and their lives seem truly superfluous, but there is real depth in Léa and Chéri that is only revealed in their relationship with each other.

LeahBergen Oh, yes. 😍😍 3mo

This book is a little gem. I enjoyed everything about it from the strange dystopian premise to the undercurrent of melancholic hope, but especially the characters. The translation is excellent; Mitsutani manages to convey Tawada‘s fascinating ruminations on the nature of language and doesn‘t lose an ounce of the humor that makes the book wholly unique. It‘s just the right combination of weird, sad, and delightful. #witreadathon

And now for something completely different...

This is my second pick for the #WITReadathon, translated from the French by Janet Flanner in 1929.

Chéri, the young & handsome playboy, “son of a tart,” is quite distinct from the 108-year-old, deeply thoughtful Yoshiro in my last read.

At the end of spring, my life was upended by several insane and devastating circumstances. Since then, I‘ve cultivated peace in my heart and a greater sense of joy and compassion for myself & the people around me. I‘ve also established a number of healthy habits: yoga 3x/wk; run/walk 2 miles/day; I‘m caffeine & alcohol free; meat 3x/wk or less; I‘m prioritizing my own enjoyment daily; most of all, I‘m being present and open with my kids, always.👇

saresmoore These are all rewarding, but there are bigger goals on the horizon. I‘m realizing that life is unpredictable & rich at every moment and I want to savor what‘s in front of me. So I‘m saying it here, first: starting today, for one year, I will only read the fiction that I already own. My focus is on enjoyment and enrichment, so if I read 30 pages of a book and decide it‘s not for me, I‘ll post it on Litsy for someone to claim and send it to them! 3mo

I thought reading this would be enlightening, because the author went through something very similar to one of the hard life events I‘ve been facing recently. But it wasn‘t. The book is jumbled and disorganized, poorly written and under-researched, but most of all, it‘s so damn privileged! This reads like one long, self-aggrandizing vent session with 1,000 healing techniques jammed in and no genuine self-awareness. I can‘t even.

This book was rec‘d to me by my therapist in our first session. 😅 I didn‘t love it, but gained some good perspective. The practical tips and change sheets were ridiculous and things I‘ve already been doing for years as a self-aware person, but I think this serves as a good primer on emotional neglect. I enjoyed the “For Therapists” section the most and instantly saw why my MFT was so quick to recognize emotional neglect in me!

This is a wonderful book. I gleaned (and will continue to revisit) so much wisdom from Pema Chödrön. Her approach is distinctly Buddhist, but no prior knowledge or adherence is required to understand and practice the principles set forth. Chödrön‘s writing is accessible, relatable, and pithy. I read this over the course of about a month and, each day, it was a balm for my weary soul. I‘m sure I will reread this many times.

Cathythoughts She is very good ! I like her too 3mo

Pickpick

This was another totally distinct selection for the #NYRBBookClub. I really enjoyed this one! The story unwinds on itself in a masterful way and Chaze strikes just the right balance between gory and prudish. The main character is oddly relatable, even endearing, and serves as the perfect vehicle for the bizarre and unpredictable story. The tone is both light-hearted and ominous—it doesn‘t take itself too seriously, but there is some serious depth.

mklong Great review! I‘ve only just started, but I‘m really enjoying it so far 3mo

saresmoore @ReadingEnvy It was @vivastory ‘s brainchild & it‘s all on Litsy. From the group of initial members, we are each assigned a month to submit three selections and all the members vote. Anyone can join in the readalong and discussion for what‘s chosen each month. 3mo

Night and Day | Virginia Woolf

I bought myself a couple of presents at the bookstore. I guess I‘m just feeling the Woolf & Dickens vibes, these days.

JennyM That is a very beautiful Woolf ❤️ 4mo

Moray_Reads What a beautiful edition! Have you read it before? 4mo
saresmoore @Moray_Reads I haven‘t, but I‘m really looking forward to it! I‘m assuming you‘ve read it? 4mo
Moray_Reads @saresmoore I think it was the first Woolf I read. Less modernist than her later stuff but still exquisitely written 4mo
OnlyYoo I loved Bleak House. Possible my favorite Dickens so far! 4mo
batsy That Woolf 😍 Bleak House is still tbr for me, I had grand plans to read it for #litsyclassics last year but, well, 😆 4mo
emilyhaldi One gorgeous and one chunkster - a good combo! 🙌🏻 Happy to see you back on Litsy, you‘ve been missed!! 4mo
Centique @OnlyYoo Bleak House is my favourite Dickens so far too 😊 Enjoy Sara! 4mo
saresmoore @emilyhaldi ♥️♥️♥️ 4mo
saresmoore @OnlyYoo @Centique @AnneCecilie That‘s very encouraging to hear! 4mo
saresmoore @batsy I‘m honestly impressed that you can remember what was on your list for #litsyclassics! You know I‘d be up for a buddy read, but you probably also have deduced that I‘m a notoriously flaky buddy reader... 😬🤷‍♀️ 4mo
batsy @saresmoore I'm game if you are! Perhaps later in the year? 😁 #flakybuddyreadersunite 4mo

Big Sky | Kate Atkinson
post image
Pickpick

Dynamic and lovable characters, riveting storytelling, humor and gravity in one breath—Kate Atkinson never ceases to amaze me. This is the 5th in a series following the same unrealistic-but-wonderful MC, Jackson Brodie. The voices of the women in Jackson‘s head have reached a fever pitch in this volume & Atkinson has ramped up the feminist and political themes. Even the subject matter is more raw and brutal (& honest) than ever. I loved it.

TrishB A great read from a wonderful author 👍🏻 4mo

JennyM Great review - looking forward to reading this 4mo
saresmoore @Lindy @JennyM @cariashley She takes on the issue of human trafficking—one that is very close to my heart—so it was a genuinely tough read at times, but deftly treated and with plenty of satisfying justice & vengeance (with a dose of compassion!) for the bad guys. (edited) 4mo
Lindy @saresmoore 👍👍👍 4mo

Burnout: The Secret to Unlocking the Stress Cycle | Emily Nagoski, PhD, Amelia Nagoski, DMA

Pickpick

I finally finished reading this and I‘m so glad I did. This is a highly applicable, science-based, progressive, and confident look at the effects of the patriarchy on women. When I started reading this, it was overwhelming because I was under more oppression than I could have possibly realized, but because of that the timing was perfect and now I‘ve finished the book with acceptance and hope for the future. I‘m grateful for how it turned out.

kspenmoll Even your review sounds hopeful. 4mo
TrishB Sounds like a good book, I‘m glad it helped ❤️ 4mo

I can‘t put my finger on why, exactly, but this quick read spoke to my soul this morning.

“Time drove down the street in her vintage Volkswagen Beetle, her best friend Gravity in the passenger seat. The top was down even though it was January. Their hair slapped their cheeks and got caught in the corners of their mouths and pulled against their scalps.”

MicheleinPhilly 👋🏼👋🏼👋🏼Nice to see you. 4mo
LauraBeth I don‘t know why but this strangely reminds me of Denis Johnson. 4mo
LeahBergen I think Gravity has been following me around lately. 😆 4mo

saresmoore @LauraBeth Might be why I like it so much! I taste just a touch of some Neil Gaiman mythos flavor in there, too. 4mo
saresmoore @LeahBergen Amen, sister! She‘s a real bitch. 4mo
Suet624 @LauraBeth Jeepers! Really? I wish the one book I read of his had even an iota of this in it. 😀 4mo
Suet624 Howdy Ms. Sara! So nice to see you! 4mo
LauraBeth @Suet624 😂 I think I have a tendency to see some of my favorite writing in everything I read! 4mo

I‘m about halfway through this month‘s pick for #NYRBBookClub.

I‘m not saying that I want the first-person narrator, Harriet to come to a bitter end...but I‘m not NOT saying that, either. 😬

Her scathing critique of everyone and everything is hilarious in its flippancy, but it‘s also exhausting in its ubiquity. To Harriet, the only person who deserves any grace is herself, and even she doesn‘t get off scot-free.

Theaelizabet I‘m about halfway through, too, and would say that‘s a nice summation. 5mo

saresmoore @vivastory So true! I miss Cassandra. 5mo
MicheleinPhilly Harriet's an asshole. 5mo
saresmoore @MicheleinPhilly Yeah, that pretty much sums it up. 5mo
emilyhaldi Lol @MicheleinPhilly ...wondering if I‘m the only one that looks back on Harriet with fondness a week after finishing the book? 🤔😂 5mo
LeahBergen OMG. Isn‘t she EXHAUSTING? 😆😆 5mo
Suet624 @emilyhaldi I wouldn‘t want her as a friend, but I‘m quite fond of her as well. 5mo
mklong I‘m with @vivastory she made me miss Cassandra! 5mo
BarbaraBB @saresmoore @mklong @vivastory I was just mentioning Cassandra in another post about Harriet. It is such a coincidence that our two mc‘s are so, well, outspoken. I do miss Harriet a bit too @emilyhaldi but I miss Cassandra more. I keep wondering where she‘ll be now! Also @MicheleinPhilly 😂 5mo

There are so many incredibly difficult life things that have happened in the past three months, I couldn‘t list them even if I wanted to. But, I‘m filled with hope. I‘ve been seeing a wonderful therapist and learning to stay open & present to whatever comes.

I can‘t express how much gratitude I have for this Litsy community and the unequivocal support and encouragement I‘ve received. Thank you, friends!

vivastory I'm sorry to hear that life is difficult right now. Hopefully things will turn around soon. In the meantime there's Murderbot. 5mo

saresmoore @Moray_Reads Thank you, sweet friend. Things are not better yet, but I‘m hopeful that they will be in time. I‘ve had to face many hard truths and make some very tough decisions, but I am taking it one day at a time and letting my top priorities (mostly my children, obvs) take precedence. 4mo
