gradcat Where are you? I‘m really hoping for you guys to be okay....♥️ 2w
saresmoore @gradcat We are in Wilmington, NC. I‘m not overly concerned about wind damage, but major flooding is a real possibility. saresmoore @MicheleinPhilly I don‘t know!!! It‘s devastating, isn‘t it? Lucy is in full emotional preteen mode and I just can‘t. We talk about hormones and breasts and feminism and crushes and stress all the time now. 😱 2w

saresmoore @Branwen @sisilia @erzascarletbookgasm @Leftcoastzen @LeahBergen @batsy @Kalalalatja We had such a nice time! It was a much needed respite and great family bonding. Reading this was somehow both indulgent & deeply satisfying. It was in turns lighthearted, unsentimental and emotionally raw. I am impressed by how far ahead of her time Colette was. I felt utterly transported into a view of the world, of Paris, that I‘d never considered. All of the characters are unlikeable and their lives seem truly superfluous, but there is real depth in Léa and Chéri that is only revealed in their relationship with each other.

LeahBergen Oh, yes. 😍😍 3w
Centique And now I want to read Colette... great review! 2w

This book is a little gem. I enjoyed everything about it from the strange dystopian premise to the undercurrent of melancholic hope, but especially the characters. The translation is excellent; Mitsutani manages to convey Tawada‘s fascinating ruminations on the nature of language and doesn‘t lose an ounce of the humor that makes the book wholly unique. It‘s just the right combination of weird, sad, and delightful. #witreadathon

“We‘ve found each other again, she thought. Like two dogs finding the slipper they‘re in the habit of chewing. How curious. That woman is my enemy and it‘s from her my comfort comes. How bound together we are, she and I.”

An excellent description of frenemies, published in 1920.

saresmoore @Aimeesue I think there‘s a good chance! I‘m looking through my vintage books and seeing a lot of debossing in the ‘50‘s. I‘d love to see a photo of your Grapes of Wrath! I have a short story collection of Steinbeck from Viking Press, 1953, but it‘s not very pretty. 3w

And now for something completely different...

This is my second pick for the #WITReadathon, translated from the French by Janet Flanner in 1929.

Chéri, the young & handsome playboy, “son of a tart,” is quite distinct from the 108-year-old, deeply thoughtful Yoshiro in my last read.

merelybookish What a pretty edition! 3w

batsy Beautiful edition 😍 3w
LeahBergen I loved, loved, loved Cheri (and The Last of Cheri). I hope you like them (I‘ll have to check the translator of my edition 🤔). 3w
saresmoore @LeahBergen You are certainly the reason that I purchased this! It is wonderful so far—effortless and a bit indulgent, but also with hints of melancholy in its honesty. 3w
saresmoore @Aimeesue @batsy I think I may be hunting down more of these Permanent Library Books in future, though I probably won‘t get them for the original $5 purchase price. 😆 3w
Aimeesue @saresmoore I've been collecting older Modern Library books. Weirdly, a lot of them still have covers, a bit ragged, but still surprising. But I get to buy them for about the original price because I get them when they the Book Sorting I volunteer for. 😄 Really, i just like them because they're so nicely done- nice size, good paper and bindings, readable print. ❤️ 3w
saresmoore @Aimeesue Yes! That‘s a really good volunteer gig! I have some of the Modern Library ones as well. Considering some of my brand new books fall apart as I‘m reading them, I think it‘s safe to say they don‘t make ‘em like they used to! 3w

“When the coughing stopped, Mumei would go back to drinking his juice as if nothing had happened. Looking up at Yoshiro, he would ask in surprise, ‘Great-grandpa, are you all right?‘ He didn‘t seem to know what ‘suffering‘ meant; he simply coughed when food wouldn‘t go down, or vomited it back up... (cont.) 👇

saresmoore “...Of course he felt pain, but it was pure pain, unaccompanied by any ‘Why am I the only one who has to suffer like this?‘ sort of lamentations that Yoshiro knew so well. Perhaps this acceptance was a treasure given to the youngest generation. Mumei didn‘t know how to feel sorry for himself.” #witreadathon 3w
merelybookish Based on the quotes you've posted, this book sounds fascinating! 3w
saresmoore @merelybookish Honestly, I‘m surprised by how much I‘m enjoying it. It‘s very quirky and non-linear with a depressing premise, but I‘m finding it readable and oddly uplifting. 3w

“In his youth, Yoshiro had prided himself on always having an answer ready when someone asked him who his favorite composer or designer was, or what kind of wine he preferred. Confident in his good taste, he had poured time and money into surrounding himself with things that would show it off. Now he no longer felt any need to use taste as the bricks and mortar for a structure called ‘individuality.‘”

At the end of spring, my life was upended by several insane and devastating circumstances. Since then, I‘ve cultivated peace in my heart and a greater sense of joy and compassion for myself & the people around me. I‘ve also established a number of healthy habits: yoga 3x/wk; run/walk 2 miles/day; I‘m caffeine & alcohol free; meat 3x/wk or less; I‘m prioritizing my own enjoyment daily; most of all, I‘m being present and open with my kids, always.👇

saresmoore These are all rewarding, but there are bigger goals on the horizon. I‘m realizing that life is unpredictable & rich at every moment and I want to savor what‘s in front of me. So I‘m saying it here, first: starting today, for one year, I will only read the fiction that I already own. My focus is on enjoyment and enrichment, so if I read 30 pages of a book and decide it‘s not for me, I‘ll post it on Litsy for someone to claim and send it to them! 4w

I thought reading this would be enlightening, because the author went through something very similar to one of the hard life events I‘ve been facing recently. But it wasn‘t. The book is jumbled and disorganized, poorly written and under-researched, but most of all, it‘s so damn privileged! This reads like one long, self-aggrandizing vent session with 1,000 healing techniques jammed in and no genuine self-awareness. I can‘t even.

This book was rec‘d to me by my therapist in our first session. 😅 I didn‘t love it, but gained some good perspective. The practical tips and change sheets were ridiculous and things I‘ve already been doing for years as a self-aware person, but I think this serves as a good primer on emotional neglect. I enjoyed the “For Therapists” section the most and instantly saw why my MFT was so quick to recognize emotional neglect in me!

This is a wonderful book. I gleaned (and will continue to revisit) so much wisdom from Pema Chödrön. Her approach is distinctly Buddhist, but no prior knowledge or adherence is required to understand and practice the principles set forth. Chödrön‘s writing is accessible, relatable, and pithy. I read this over the course of about a month and, each day, it was a balm for my weary soul. I‘m sure I will reread this many times.

Cathythoughts She is very good ! I like her too 4w
saresmoore @Cathythoughts I love her compassionate & accessible approach. There are other teachers I‘ve come across who seem so distant and self-absorbed (ironically), but Pema is a lot like a wise, loving friend. 4w

Black Wings Has My Angel | Elliott Chaze
post image

This was another totally distinct selection for the #NYRBBookClub. I really enjoyed this one! The story unwinds on itself in a masterful way and Chaze strikes just the right balance between gory and prudish. The main character is oddly relatable, even endearing, and serves as the perfect vehicle for the bizarre and unpredictable story. The tone is both light-hearted and ominous—it doesn‘t take itself too seriously, but there is some serious depth.

mklong Great review! I‘ve only just started, but I‘m really enjoying it so far 1mo
batsy I've only just started as well and liking it so far. Going from Hurston's rich, detailed prose to Chase's spare, economical style is really interesting and fun. The noir inflections are so enjoyable. Nice review 💜 1mo
saresmoore @mklong Thank you! I‘m not used to the genre, but I really liked it. 1mo

I have been reading SO MUCH self-help/psychology/wellness lately and it has been essential, but I‘m glad to be bringing more fiction back into my life. I‘m loving both the #NYRBBookClub pick for the month and the tagged book, on recommendation from @LauraBeth —the two couldn‘t be more different!

LauraBeth I hope you enjoy it! ❤️ 1mo
TrishB Tagged book sounds good - still expensive here so I‘m waiting for an offer. 1mo
TobeyTheScavengerMonk The Artist‘s Way was one of my college textbooks! For my Music for Elementary Ed. class. I initially scoffed at its granola vibe, but it ended up really putting me in a good mental place and by the end of the semester I loved it. 1mo

saresmoore @TrishB It‘s a fun read; will be nice when you need a change of pace sometime. 1mo
saresmoore @TobeyTheScavengerMonk I have low tolerance for books like this, usually, but it was calling my name. I‘m glad to hear it‘s a good one! 1mo
LeahBergen I‘ll be getting to the latest #NYRBBookClub pick myself this week! 👍🏻 1mo
ValerieAndBooks It‘s fine to go through a self-help period for a while 💖— I was there not too long ago ( shortly after my dad passed) . You all are influencing my dreams— last night I dreamed I was shopping for nyrb books and ofc promptly forgot which ones I bought when I woke up 😂 1mo
saresmoore @ValerieAndBooks I love it when Litsy influences my dreams! That sounds like a good one, but certainly a disappointment on waking. 😅 1mo
Cinfhen @MicheleinPhilly just bought the tagged book on our shopping outing the other day!!! It looks really good but I was trying very hard to avoid all hardcover books ( darn weight restrictions) 1mo

Big Sky | Kate Atkinson
post image

Dynamic and lovable characters, riveting storytelling, humor and gravity in one breath—Kate Atkinson never ceases to amaze me. This is the 5th in a series following the same unrealistic-but-wonderful MC, Jackson Brodie. The voices of the women in Jackson‘s head have reached a fever pitch in this volume & Atkinson has ramped up the feminist and political themes. Even the subject matter is more raw and brutal (& honest) than ever. I loved it.

I finally finished reading this and I‘m so glad I did. This is a highly applicable, science-based, progressive, and confident look at the effects of the patriarchy on women. When I started reading this, it was overwhelming because I was under more oppression than I could have possibly realized, but because of that the timing was perfect and now I‘ve finished the book with acceptance and hope for the future. I‘m grateful for how it turned out.

I can‘t put my finger on why, exactly, but this quick read spoke to my soul this morning.

“Time drove down the street in her vintage Volkswagen Beetle, her best friend Gravity in the passenger seat. The top was down even though it was January. Their hair slapped their cheeks and got caught in the corners of their mouths and pulled against their scalps.”

I‘m about halfway through this month‘s pick for #NYRBBookClub.

I‘m not saying that I want the first-person narrator, Harriet to come to a bitter end...but I‘m not NOT saying that, either. 😬

Her scathing critique of everyone and everything is hilarious in its flippancy, but it‘s also exhausting in its ubiquity. To Harriet, the only person who deserves any grace is herself, and even she doesn‘t get off scot-free.

Theaelizabet I‘m about halfway through, too, and would say that‘s a nice summation. 3mo

It‘s been a whirlwind of a weekend. My husband has been in Florida for 3 days and my panic disorder has been in full swing. I‘m finally calm enough to enjoy reading, so I‘m taking full advantage of this quiet morning and reminding myself that, through it all, I‘m still a good mom, even when I have to push past the panic to love on my kiddos.

Happy reading to all on holiday, today! I hope it will be peaceful and enriching.

MicheleinPhilly You are a superhero. When I am in the throes of panic I can‘t even take care of myself. Your kiddos are lucky to have you. ❤️ 4mo
saresmoore @TrishB Too true! I think, now that my kids are halfway to adulthood, they appreciate getting to see my human side. I just have to remember that it‘s a good thing. Thank you. ♥️ 4mo
saresmoore @Kalalalatja Yes! We all are. Even the perfectionists who don‘t believe it (me). 😄 Thank you, friend. 4mo
saresmoore @MicheleinPhilly I‘ve no doubt you are capable of rising to any occasion. Teeth chattering nausea + certainty of imminent death is just brutal, whether in the company of minors or alone! ♥️ Lucy was appalled when she offered me chocolate and I politely declined. “Not even chocolate helps?!” #harshtruths 4mo
AmyG Feel better. I have this mediation tape that i listen to when I panic...sometimes makes me feel better. Hope all has passed. And yes, it‘s important to let your children see you are a human being...not perfect as none of us are. It‘s truth and It allows them to feel and be human themselves. 4mo

erzascarletbookgasm That‘s a great reminder to yourself. ❤️Hugs. 4mo
ShyBookOwl @saresmoore just recognizing that I'm creating the spiral and telling myself I'll get through it as I have before is a big help. It doesn't stop it, but it keeps me somewhat grounded throughout. Unfortunately, I still have a ways to go before I can feel in control of it. Only beginning to seek help recently. How about you? 4mo
Tamra It‘s good to know we aren‘t alone! 💚 4mo
saresmoore @AmyG Thank you for that truth, Amy. I‘ve been recognizing my need for more meditative practices—your reminder is helpful! 4mo
saresmoore @ShyBookOwl That is so good! I‘ve been practicing a lot of cognitive behavioral therapy techniques for a long time. The complications of many phobias cloud my awareness sometimes. I‘ve managed & coped for over 15 years, but am recognizing that it‘s time to find a good therapist and banish this shit forever! Ha! Best wishes for your journey to health. ♥️ 4mo
saresmoore @Tamra Isn‘t it? My mom also has it and reminds me that it‘s no different than a physical ailment, nothing to be ashamed of, and a perfectly acceptable reason to take a break or back out of commitments, if needed. Just remembering that I‘m not a solitary freak of nature is a huge help! 🙃♥️ 4mo
Tamra @saresmoore definitely not! We all carry our challenges with us. Isn‘t it funny how in clear moments I can unequivocally say my fear or anxiety is irrational or overblown, but in the moment that is lost or not entirely helpful. The mind is a weird thing, like it highjacks itself. 🤨 Being a parent brings out the worst for worries on many levels. But it is something of a comfort knowing it‘s very typical! 4mo
ShyBookOwl @saresmoore I couldn't agree more! I'm curious about CBT too. I'll have to look more into it. All the best on your journey, as well! 4mo

saresmoore @ShyBookOwl All books surely have their flaws, but I‘ve found Brené Brown‘s The Gifts of Imperfection (I‘m a total perfectionist) and the tagged book to be helpful. 4mo

“Tracy wondered if her own parents would have been willing to sacrifice themselves to save her. Her mother had lingered on after Tracy‘s father died and in her final days gave the impression that she wasn‘t going unless she could take Tracy down with her. Her mother had the DNA of a scorpion, built to outlast a nuclear winter. The cancer got her in the end, though... The diamonds and cockroaches were free to inherit the earth now she was gone.“

After finishing a disappointing read, settling back in with Kate Atkinson‘s clever & lively storytelling is a delight!

This one (as the title hints) is teeming with Emily Dickinson references. Every little allusion and connection in her books is like a chocolate Easter egg, waiting to be discovered.

TrishB She‘s awesome ❤️ 4mo
saresmoore @TrishB Reading her books is comforting, satisfying, and inspiring all at once. I love how her characters are tragically, yet wonderfully imperfect and you get to be inside each of their heads. 4mo

I requested that the library order this before I bought the book for myself. Good thing because my husband already gave away our copy. I just so happened to be wearing my #YangGang t-shirt today when I picked it up.

I‘m a fan of a few of the bigger name candidates, as well, but Andrew‘s perspective is so damn fresh and I think he needs to be in the conversation!

AmyG I like what he says, too. 4mo
saresmoore @AmyG I‘m on his email list, as well as those for some other candidates. His emails are authentic and enjoyable and really the only ones I read! 4mo
vivastory I'm not familiar with him. I'll have to look into him more. It's very unlikely (now that Biden entered the race) he will get the nomination, but I'm rooting for Buttigieg. A democratic candidate who gets a standing ovation during a fox town hall & cited Pamuk's My Name is Red as one of his favorite books?! Sold! 😄 4mo
See All 7 Comments
saresmoore @vivastory Buttigieg is amazing! I‘m holding out hope that he has a fighting chance. I‘m listening to his political memoir now and I just really like the guy. 4mo
Suet624 The Dem Party will never let my candidate be the ultimate choice. They already admitted it. So I guess I‘m going to have to eventually go with whoever they support. Here‘s hoping it‘s not Biden. 🤞 4mo
saresmoore @Suet624 That‘s so frustrating. If it‘s Biden, it can only be because Millennials still aren‘t voting... 4mo

Well, this was a disappointment. The overall concept is trite, the second-person narration is obnoxious, the writing is lackluster, and the pacing is painfully slow. I finished, still wondering when something interesting was going to happen and also desperate for the end. The ending was lame, too, clearly a setup for a sequel.

squirrelbrain 👎 ☹️ 4mo
Leftcoastzen Don‘t hold back , tell us what you really think.😂Thanks for the honest review ! When certain genres are hot , I think they over publish thinking everything will sell. 4mo
saresmoore @Leftcoastzen I know, I felt like I should qualify it with something nice, but I really couldn‘t think of anything. I‘m sure if I was face to face with the author, I‘d be able to come up with something. 😬 4mo

TrishB Not rushing to read anytime soon then.... 4mo
rabbitprincess Oh boo! I so liked her Ancillary Justice series ☹️ 4mo
merelybookish I hope it was short! 4mo
saresmoore @merelybookish 400 pages, but with large print and wide margins. Still, the content could easily and perhaps more successfully been condensed into a short story or novella. 4mo
saresmoore @rabbitprincess I want to try Ancillary Justice, still. I‘ve heard such good things about it! 4mo
saresmoore @TrishB Some have really enjoyed it and I think even @Lindy ended up liking it, but I was underwhelmed. 4mo
Lindy @saresmoore Whaaaa! 😫 I‘m sorry it wasn‘t for you. I recommend avoiding 4mo
saresmoore @Lindy No need to apologize! I‘m glad I finished it because I would have always wondered if I missed out on something. And thank you for the recommendation! 4mo
Lindy @saresmoore I hope my wording was clear. Stay well away from 🚫 4mo
mjdowens I only made it about 1/4 of the way through and just couldn‘t do it. I was confused and lost the whole time 4mo
saresmoore @Lindy Yes, I read you loud & clear. I almost wish there was an anti-TBR stack, since I find I‘m repeatedly drawn to books like that. 4mo
saresmoore @mjdowens I was surprised that it was pretty much one note throughout. I don‘t think you missed out on anything. 4mo
vivastory Hey, Sara, May is a bit early to be raving about your favorite book of the year!! Sheesh! 😆 4mo
saresmoore @vivastory Guess I won‘t be talking about this one on Reading Envy! 🙃 4mo
vivastory Are you going to be a guest soon? 4mo
saresmoore @vivastory Not recording until September, but it‘s been on my mind. I‘ve had a slow reading year, so far. 4mo
LeahBergen I have an uncontrollable urge to “stack” this just to be funny. 😂😂😂 4mo
readordierachel Well, shoot. This sounded so good! 4mo
saresmoore @readordierachel It did to me, too! 4mo
Branwen I felt the SAME way about this! I couldn't even finish it, the point of view just drove me nuts! 😝 4mo
saresmoore @Branwen That makes me feel better because I know you read much more widely in this genre than I do! I have been craving SFF and even high fantasy lately. I started All Systems Red and I‘m loving it. I also bought The Priory of the Orange Tree as a Kindle deal recently, so hoping that will scratch the itch. I‘m open to recs, though, if you have any! 4mo
Branwen @saresmoore Yes, I was really surprised at my dislike for this book! The genre I just love, and because of that it's rare for me to find a book in fantasy that I don't like, but...well, it was kust awful! 😁 Oooh, Priory of the Orange Tree is SO FREAKING WONDERFUL! I'm reading it now, and kerp being blown away by it! GREAT CHOICE! 😄👍 4mo
Branwen @saresmoore I would also reccomend Middlegame by Seanan Mcguire! I just finished that and it was marvelous! Time travel, clones, complex storytelling, and overall great characters. Actually, the Wayward Children series by the same author is also fantastic. It's about children who go to other worlds and how they cope with coming back to our world when they're a bit older. 4mo
Branwen @saresmoore I've also just started a fantasy book called A Conspiracy of Truths by Alexandra Rowland which is really good! The protagonist is a cranky old man and he's amazing! 🤣😂 4mo
Branwen @saresmoore Those were all fantasy recs. If you're looking for scifi I HIGHLY RECCOMEND The Expanse series. Hands down one of the best series I've ever read! 4mo
saresmoore @Branwen Yay! Such great recommendations! Thank yoooou! ♥️♥️♥️ 4mo

vivastory I love this! Much better than my package. One of my books was bent & the cover torn due to the USPS employee shoving it in my mailbox. 😡😠 4mo
saresmoore @vivastory Uuuuugh, that‘s terrible! Will you be able to return it, maybe? 4mo
vivastory Yeah. I've already submitted a request. It's annoying though because for some reason my apartment office is no longer signing for packages. So it unfortunately might become more frequent. 4mo
saresmoore @vivastory Well, that sucks. I‘ve had a lot of issues with Amazon books arriving damaged, so I‘ve mostly veered toward Barnes & Noble when I need a good price. They tend to take care with their packaging, at least. 4mo

Oh, hey, #Hugonuts! This is the edition I intended to read along with everyone, before life and reasons got in the way.

I didn‘t do extensive translation research, as I usually do, but I love the feel of the binding of the Oxford World‘s Classics...and the price is always right!

I hope you‘re all enjoying the buddy read. 😊

Lcsmcat I‘m liking this translation better than my other one. (I‘m kind of jumping from one version to another depending on how many distractions I have.) But your cover is better than the eBook version! 4mo
batsy Me too! I haven't read it and was planning to join #hugonuts but couldn't fit it in this month. I'm enjoying all the posts about it. 4mo
Bertha_Mason My dumb AP-Euro-taking ass was trying to figure out the pun on "Heugenots" for like ten minutes before I figured out it was just "Hugo nuts." :P 4mo
See All 12 Comments
TheEllieMo Oh!! I didn‘t realise this was being used for a buddy read!! I finished it last week. 4mo
saresmoore @batsy The more ambitious I am in planning my reading, the less time (and mental energy) I seem to have. Unfortunately, my awareness of this doesn‘t stop me from planning to participate in at least three buddy reads per month. Maybe I should join a Catch-22 buddy read next month! 🙃 4mo
saresmoore @TheEllieMo That‘s a fun coincidence! You could jump in on the group discussions! 4mo
saresmoore @Bertha_Mason The silly and/or punny hashtag trend started with a Russian classic a group of us were reading and has gotten progressively more fun & clever with each subsequent buddy read, IMO. 4mo
saresmoore @Lcsmcat You are taking quite the deep dive with this one! Are you enjoying the experience of comparing and contrasting on such a level? 4mo
Lcsmcat @saresmoore I am, but then I‘m a nerd for 19th century classics. 😀 I read Oliver Twist when I was 8 and have been working my way through Dickens, Hardy, Trollope, Gaskell etc ever since. 4mo
Lcsmcat @TheEllieMo You should definitely jump in on the discussions! 4mo
Lcsmcat @Bertha_Mason You and @saresmoore are both right about the hashtag. It was intentional. I‘m descended from Huguenot stock and I was looking for something catchy. 4mo

“Unschooling is simply living, and allowing your children to live, without the specter of conventional schooling and school-like thinking. It is the act of fusing living and learning, of seeing them as one and the same. There is no one way to be an unschooler, no singular path of facilitating self-directed education. There is you, your children, your family, your community—your life.”

Cassandra at the Wedding | Dorothy Baker
post image

I took this book pretty much everywhere with me over the past two weeks & Cassandra‘s narrow, exclusive world infiltrated my reality. The titular character‘s keen self-awareness and her passive, philosophical observations established her unique voice from the start and laid the foundation for a close-knit cast of characters who live only in subordination to her whims. This novel is tight and intentional throughout; I enjoyed every sentence of it.

saresmoore #NYRBBookClub Cassandra is back on the shelf! I think I‘m going to need to carve out more NYRB real estate in the coming months... 4mo
