Mehso-so

Elliot Ackerman is a novelist, journalist and former Marine who received the Silver Star, Bronze Star for Valour and Purple Heart during tours of duty in Iraq and Afghanistan. This is a sparsely written, thoughtful meditation on the US wars in the Middle East and his place in them and his meetings with Abu Hassar (an Al Qaeda fighter) are poignant but his reticence to go deep into the conflict make it a little frustrating at times.

Pickpick

Every bit as powerful & compelling as Nafisi (& others) suggested. Ackerman‘s memoir offers an uncompromising look at war & its aftermath as he recounts experiences in Afghanistan & Iraq as well as the people & places that drew him back to the region after his enlistment was over. Ackerman is an accomplished writer (he‘s been nominated for the National Book Award) & his meditative, unflinching look at war & geopolitics makes for powerful reading.

Author of Read Dangerously spoke highly of this book and it sounded interesting. So, I‘m starting this one today.

Pickpick

Have you read Elliot Ackerman before? Well if you want to hear this generation's military voice, you owe it to yourself. His new memoir is haunting. I've read 3 of his books now and let me tell you, this man knows how to end a book. All three endings have haunted me. I woke up in the middle of TNT night last night thinking about how he ended this memoir.
