pickI love stuff like this—and savored the attitude shifts Holt vacillates through...sometimes playful when confronting the big question this book proposes; other times serious, and heavy.
All in all it made me think. I thought about it.... I thought some more. I rejected certain stuff, embraced other parts, but appreciated getting to have so much of the purview wrapped in a tidy, accessible volume for me to tackle.
My second nonfiction book in a row—when I don‘t normally read nonfiction—and I‘m finding it mind blowing. It‘s the exact kind of thing I‘m into.
Maybe the part of reality we know indirectly through science, the physical part, has the same inner nature as the part we know directly through introspection, the conscious part. In other words, maybe all of reality—subjective and objective—is made out of the same basic stuff. That is a pleasingly simple hypothesis. But isn‘t it a bit crazy?
In the opening pages of “The Fabric of Reality,” Deutsch had written, “I do not believe that we are now, or ever shall be, close to understanding everything there is.” Still, he had managed to impress one positive lesson on me: that there is a lot more to reality than we might imagine. The part of it we inhabit not only is tiny, but also may be grossly unrepresentative of the whole, giving us a partial and distorted view.
