Currently listening/reading Freefall.

Do any of you switch back and forth between listening and reading the same book? I do this pretty regularly. I‘m loving this book!

Thanks to Harper Books #partner for sending me a free review copy. #freefall #freefallbook #harperbooks #jessicabarry

BillBlume I have only ever done that with DoG&M, because it helped me get through what was a dreadfully awful book. Side note: this is the book that made me realize an advantage of audiobooks is that you don‘t have to pause the story to roll your eyes. 9mo

https://www.newyorker.com/magazine/2019/02/11/a-suspense-novelists-trail-of-dece...

britt_brooke I‘m happy I never read his book because it sounds as awful as he does. However, I think the real problem here is the publishing industry. But, that could be said for any industry. There are liars and manipulators everywhere. (edited) 9mo
Jess7 I didn‘t love it. It was suspenseful, but Anna Fox (main character) drove me crazy and the ending was super far-fetched. Learning about this author makes me sick. @britt_brooke 9mo

Sharpeipup 😮 Just wow. 9mo
AmyG Mr. Ripley and his Ladder to the Sky. Wow. I won‘t ever read any of his books. 9mo
julesG @britt_brooke Agree to the liars and manipulators everywhere. Why should the publishing industry be an exception. 9mo
TheLibrarian Well I‘m glad I didn‘t pay for his book and I won‘t support him in the future. That‘s just disgusting behavior. 9mo
Jess7 Yes, I won‘t be reading his next one. @TheLibrarian 9mo
tournevis Ok, someone on here yesterday said they went to college with him and was linking to this article. I lost the post. Who was it? 9mo
britt_brooke @julesG Exactly. That‘s why I don‘t find this situation surprising. Unfortunate? Yes. But not altogether shocking. 9mo
Megabooks @tournevis Yes! I went to college with him. Worked at the Chronicle with him. When it came out in Duke magazine last year that he was AJ Finn my mom remembered his name, but I didn‘t have a clear memory of him. Mary Carmichael, who was contacted for the article, was a friend in college. The bff read the article. She was head of the whole paper the year after Dan graduated and doesn‘t remember him. I contacted the friend that reviewed TV when 👇🏻 9mo
Megabooks Dan reviewed films and haven‘t heard back yet. It bugs me that I don‘t remember all his shenanigans. It‘s just crazy. I love (in a bad way) what he wrote to Princeton because that was the only school I applied to where I didn‘t get in! 9mo
Megabooks @britt_brooke @Jess7 @AmyG @TheLibrarian I don‘t plan on reading his next one either. I think it was @TrishB who said she met him at a book signing. 9mo
britt_brooke @Megabooks After all of this, I‘ll be curious to see what his books sales look like on the next one. Crazy that you went to school with him! 9mo
BarbaraTheBibliophage This reminds me so much of what happened when the truth came out about James Frey‘s supposedly autobiographical book. 9mo
Leftcoastzen Holy Crap! 9mo
Eggbeater Wow. I just read the article. This is crazy. Bipolar disorder does not turn one into a pathological liar. What a shame! I really liked the book, too. 9mo
TrishB @Megabooks I would like to say it was me just to add to the story! Not this time though. I have this book on my kindle but haven‘t read. 9mo
Leftcoastzen I was kinda interested in reading it, but also, the unreliable narrator thing is getting a bit tired. 9mo
Tonton Read the article, as well as a recap in the Guardian: https://www.theguardian.com/books/2019/feb/05/bestselling-author-of-the-woman-at... wow, a lot of energy misplaced 9mo
mrp27 @AmyG said it the best! Crazy..... 9mo
tpixie I haven‘t made it through the article yet but the story is incredible!!!!! Thanks so much for tagging me on this! 9mo
TheBookStacker This is bonkers! Definitely creepy parallels between Ripley and him (murder aside) 9mo
lele1432 Nooo freaking way!! Between this, Bad Blood Elizabeth Holmes and Billy McFarland from the Fyre Festival documentaries I'm too done!! We live in a world full of "successful" frauds. ? To lie about cancer is disgusting. I'm mad I bought his eBook on sale! ? I hope his next one tanks. 9mo
Megabooks @lele1432 preach!! 🙌🏻🙌🏻🙌🏻 9mo
BibliOphelia BANANA. PANTS. I am so bummed I bought the book (which I have yet to read) and hope his career crashes and burns. So tired of the callous, privileged people who burn through real nice people and never get their comeuppance. 9mo
Marilyncjackson This is crazy! And thanks for sharing 9mo
Reviewsbylola That‘s wild! And I also jumped to the James Frey comparison @BarbaraTheBibliophage although somehow this seems waaaaaay worse to me. I guess because this dude just lies for the hell of it, even to people who should be able to trust his credibility, whereas I guess I give Frey some artistic license. 😬😬 Awful, I know. 9mo
TheFunkyBookworm Omg wow this is truly wild!!! I‘ll def be skipping his next book...I wonder how people think they can get away with hiding these “skeletons” 9mo
TNbookworm Wow! I'm glad I never jumped on the bandwagon and read his book! What a liar! Crazy that he could get away with alI that! 9mo
Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks @Jess7 I haven‘t read it... it sounded too much like The Girl In The Train and I did not like that book!! So glad I didn‘t spend money on this one!! 9mo
The_Heeler_Booklife He sounds crazy. It‘s just horrible he loves to dupe and manipulate. Won‘t read his next book. 9mo
GripLitGrl Whoa! Thanks for tag. I am definitely anti liar I pretty must have a zero tolerance level for liars. He's quite the pathological liar & about health issues too, that is the worst! Thinking his book sales will suffer for this & I definitely won't be giving him any support going forward. I do think to lie in the ways he did something is not quite right & he may need some help so he can stop.😳audiobook library loan for me the hype was understood 9mo
Jennifer3 I have no words and my phone died before I finished it. Holy sh*t! That amount of lying is insanity. And how no one has called him on it for years! And that author Hannah and what she knows and does. My mind is blown by this whole situation @Jess7 9mo

Last Woman Standing | Amy Gentry
post image
Mehso-so

3/5 - I finished this book today, but it took me forever to get into it. (Hence the picture from early December when I started reading it.) I loved Gentry‘s first book, but this one didn‘t work as well for me. Parts of it were suspenseful, but a lot of it was drawn out and the ending felt far-fetched. The social commentary in it is important, but for me that wasn‘t enough to make me love it. Ultimately it was just so-so. #jpbookreview #netgalley

Jess7 📚 2/52 | Thanks to the publisher and netgalley for allowing me to read an early electronic review copy of #LastWomanStanding by #AmyGentry in exchange for my honest review. This book published 1/15 and is available wherever books are sold. #thegreeneyedreader (edited) 10mo
Jess7 Also — I think the reason I didn‘t love it was because I didn‘t have any feelings about the characters in this book. I didn‘t love, like, or hate any of them. I didn‘t think they were clever or interesting. For me whenever the plot is a bit slow, I really need the characters to evoke some type of emotion in me— be it hate or love, but frankly I just didn‘t care what happened to any of the people in this book. 10mo
Megabooks Thanks for the honest, good review. I liked her first book, but I think I‘ll just wait on the library for this one. 10mo
TorieStorieS I completely agree- it felt like two books forced together rather awkwardly... and I agree with your assessment of the characters and their likability!!! 10mo

An Anonymous Girl | Sarah Pekkanen, Greer Hendricks
post image
Pickpick

3.8/5 stars ⭐️⭐️⭐️🌟 - This book grabbed my attention from the beginning. Jessica Farris, a makeup artist in need of money, signs up for an anonymous psychological study on morality and ethics, conducted by an elusive Dr. Shields. Jessica speaks honestly and bares her inner secrets to Dr. Shields in her initial sessions. Dr. Shields offers Jessica an opportunity to participate in a social experiment beyond the confines of a computer. 👇🏼👇🏼

Jess7 (2) {continued } Enticed by the offer of generous compensation, Jessica accepts. Jessica quickly gets caught up in a web of deceit, jealousy, paranoia, fear, and murder. This book is suspenseful, but for those of you that read their first book, The Wife Between Us, be forewarned The Anonymous Girl, while suspenseful, lacks the explosive twist that their first book had. 👇🏼👇🏼👇🏼 (edited) 10mo
Jess7 (3) {continued} If you read very many thrillers like I do, you will likely be able to see where this book is headed, but that doesn‘t take too much away from the suspense. I enjoyed it and will continue to read these talented author‘s novels. #jpbookreview #arc #thegreeneyedreader Thank you to #stmartinspress [#partner ] for the free arc. Let‘s talk about TBR backlists! All of these books have been sitting on my bookshelves for quite some time begging me to read them, but for various reasons I haven‘t done it yet!

RaimeyGallant Nice pic. I *coughs* keep meaning to finish The Goldfinch. 10mo
valeriegeary I can highly recommend both Atwoods and the Secret History. I think I need to read A Little Life before I die but for some reason it intimidates me. 10mo
Emilymdxn I was really excited for Goldfinch and A Little Life and wound up really not liking either 😓 it‘s a hazard of spending a long time looking forward to a chunkster book! Hope you like them all tho! I adored secret history 10mo

4/5 stars - I listened to the #audiobook of this one and it was great. It started off a little slow, but once all the pieces came together, I thoroughly enjoyed it. I saw all of the twists coming, but it was still suspenseful and ultimately parts were quite heart-breaking. This was my first Lisa Jewell book, but it will not be my last. Highly recommend. #jpbookreview

Do you love a good book tree as much as I do? Here is a beautiful one from my local indie bookstore, #RoeblingPointBooks, in Covington, #Kentucky. 😍

Do you try to #shoplocal at independent bookstores? What‘s your favorite thing about indies? I love the feeling I get when I walk in.

I want to make my own BOOK TREE, but it looks incredibly time consuming. I know my friend @britt_brooke has made one before. Did you make a #booktree this year?

Chrissyreadit I want to make one too! But am more overwhelmed by the take down than the put up. 11mo
Chrissyreadit And I love shopping at indie book stores 11mo
Doughtah I haven‘t been to one recently, but there‘s one in my parents‘ town that i‘ll be heading to this new years vacay. 😊 What would some of the books be that u‘d put in ur good books tree? 11mo

Jess7 @Chrissyreadit yes!! That‘s part of the reason I haven‘t made one. @Doughtah I thought about making a small one of BOTM books since I have so many of those. @readordierachel Thank you!! 11mo
Mdargusch That does look daunting. But I love it! 11mo
TheKidUpstairs I do love to shop local when I can. I love the personal connection, and I get the best recommendations there. But sometimes I do have to do my gift buying at the big stores, especially if there's a chance they person I'm buying for will want/need to exchange! 11mo
Jess7 That makes sense. I buy most of my books from Amazon bc the price difference is huge, but I anytime I visit my local indie, I can‘t leave without buying a book to support it @TheKidUpstairs 11mo
Zelma Wow, that is a very visually pleasing book tree! 11mo
britt_brooke They‘re a lot of work! I made a small one couple of years ago, but haven‘t tried again. (edited) 11mo

LibrarianRyan Mine took about 30 mins to stack and another 10 to light and decorate. I didn‘t do one at work this year but that one normally takes half the day and that‘s on top of the half a day it takes to pull all the books. 11mo

I just love John Boyne‘s writing style and this was the book that introduced me to him. It‘s incredibly sad, but I loved it nonetheless. Thanks so much to @britt_brooke for sending me this beautiful edition for my Boyne collection! Also pictured is pretty bookmark Britt gifted me from @That-Bookish-Hiker ‘s Etsy shop! 🤗

JamieArc I saw the movie before I knew it was a book and because it tore me apart, I don‘t think I want to do that to myself twice by reading the book 😓 12mo
britt_brooke 🤗🤗🤗 12mo
Jazruiz.2014 I thought the book was ok but I wasn‘t fond of the writing style. I‘m not sure if this is the author‘s normal writing style or adapted for this book. I enjoyed the way the characters were developed in the book but the overall writing style didn‘t impress me. 12mo
Jazruiz.2014 @JamieArc I saw the movie before I knew it was a book as well. The ending in the book is sad, of course, but the movie was definitely sadder. 12mo

Who is planning to join me in December for the FINAL #LitsyBuddyRead of 2018? 🙋🏻‍♀️🙋🏻‍♀️ This book is only 276 pages, but I‘ve heard it packs in a lot to discuss! 🤗

A Ladder to the Sky | John Boyne
post image
Pickpick

5/5 stars - Boyne has done it once again. He has written a powerful, character-driven novel that captivated me from the very first page. This book is very different than Furies, and yet I loved it all the same. The main character, Maurice Swift, is the type of character you absolutely love to hate. He has no moral compass and he will do anything to get ahead in his literary career. I highly recommend! 🤩 #jpbookreview #bookreview #aladdertothesky

I had monthly plan with my credit card and then I applied a gift membership to it from my parents last year and some how without my permission and in direct contradiction to what I was told when I applied the gift membership to my account last September, BOTM charged me for a year subscription today. I‘m new to BOTM, but I had an issue with my subscription, and it took a couple of days for them to get back to me (it was the weekend when I sent the email), but once I got a response the rep kept emailing me until the issue was resolved. The_Heeler_Booklife I know sometime earlier this year they had an option in account settings to do monthly or yearly.
