Alice, I Think.
Alice, I Think. | Susan Juby
3 posts | 7 read | 10 to read
Susan Juby’s acclaimed first novel is now available in an edition that’s all grown up. After years of home schooling, it’s time for Alice MacLeod to act her age, meet new people, maybe even go to regular high school. Soon Alice is on the hunt for a look, a social life, a boyfriend and, most important, a half-decent haircut. But getting any of those things in Smithers, BC, isn’t easy. Especially not with a family like Alice’s. A hysterical account of high school that’s even funnier when you’re not in high school anymore, Alice, I Think. is certain to leave you laughing.

Pickpick

"I grew up in one of those loving families that fail to prepare a person for real life." Alice is a nerdy homeschooled kid living in a small town. On a whim, she decides to go back to "regular" school, plus a few other life goals. Alice's story is laugh out loud, a dry & dark funny. The book really captures an authentic 15-year-old voice. It's Juby's debut so not as polished as later stuff but still wonderful. Juby writes the best lovable weirdos.

CaseyTheCanadianLesbrarian A fav quote: "All three of us are going to some hair stylist recommended by dad's gay friend Finn. I have concerns about Finn's style suggestions because the only fashionable thing about him is his homosexuality." 5y
CaseyTheCanadianLesbrarian Another: "This may be a good time to take to my bed with depression. Dad does that frequently, and so do a lot of the women in the books I read. It sounds like a good way to handle problems. Sort of like lying down in the middle of the road and refusing to move. Freeing." 5y

I read this #YA book in high school and LOVED it. Like, milk coming out my nose laughing loved it. I recently got a copy at a used book store and hope it lives up to my memories. It's very Angus, Thongs, and Full Frontal Snogging which I also read in high school and loved. But this one is Canadian!
