Unknown Caller
Unknown Caller: A Novel | Debra Spark
5 posts | 2 read | 23 to read
For as long Daniella has been married to Joel, theyve received phone calls at odd hours, and late at night. Daniella knows the caller as Liesel, Joels first wife, a woman whose sudden departure devastated her husband. After years of disruptive, long-distance phone calls, Liesel rings to tell Joel shes letting Idzia, the seventeen-year-old daughter he has never met, visit for the summer. Daniella and Joel prepare for Idzias arrival, but when Joel goes to pick her up from the airport, Idzia isnt there. Back at home, the phone calls suddenly stop, and Joel and Daniella become haunted by the absence of someone who was never part of their life to begin with. Debra Sparks fourth novel, Unknown Caller, tells the story of a brief, failed marriage and its complicated aftermath. Leaping effortlessly across decades and continents, it works to uncover the reasons for Idzia and Liesels disappearance and the deeper puzzle of Liesels identity. Sparks candid, intricate novel highlights the near-impossibility of truly knowing another person, the pain in failing relationships, and the joy in successful ones.

I just can't get into this book. It's due at the library tomorrow...worth the fines to keep? Or just send it on back?

Stopped by Brookline Booksmith right outside Boston tonight after catching a movie (Hell or High Water) at the Coolidge Corner Theatre, an independent movie theater right across the street from the bookstore. 😊 I picked up Unknown Caller and The Fortunes. #getindie

BooksForEmpathy How was the movie?? We are thinking of seeing it Friday? Also, I might get The Fortunes right now! How good does it sound!? 8y
mauveandrosysky @BooksForEmpathy it was really good! Great acting and lots of moral ambiguity. 😊 I recommend it. And yes, The Fortunes looks amazing...I can't wait to read it! 8y
OneLitChick Wait, you live in Beantown? That's like one of my favorite places on earth! 8y

mauveandrosysky @Audrey we are lucky to have so many good ones! I love the Harvard and Porter bookstores too! 8y
Audrey The one in Newton Center (Newtonville Books?) is also great. It's around the corner from Sycamore Restaurant 💜. I still really really miss Wordsworth in H.Sq. 😥 8y
mauveandrosysky @Audrey oddly enough I've never been to the one in Newton. I live right in Watertown so I really have no excuse! I'll have to check it out. 8y

Pickpick

If you judge this book by its cover and title, it would appear to be some kind of thriller. Don't be fooled! It is actually a very well-written exploration of relationship, family, and invented histories. I liked it enough to pass it on to another discerning reader.

One of the more intriguing books I've gotten lately. A man is about to meet his 17-year-old daughter for the first time, but she never gets off the plane. Both she & her mother seem to have vanished without a trace. This is not billed so much as mystery as an exploration of families & secrets.

SaraFair Sounds intriguing!! 8y
