On September 14, 1814, U.S. soldiers at Baltimore‘s Fort McHenry raised a huge American flag to celebrate a crucial victory over British forces during the War of 1812. The sight of those “broad stripes and bright stars” inspired Francis Scott Key to write a song that eventually became the national anthem. This is that flag. When I viewed it at the Smithsonian in DC it was an awesome sight

BayouGirl85 I remember seeing that flag at the Smithsonian. Everyone around you stand in silence outside this glass. I sense of aww and reverence hangs in the air. 4y

CMB The flag symbolizes great sacrifice made by others on our collective behalf. Despite all our societal failings, this country still represents the best opportunity to continue progress towards equality and justice for all. It‘s worthy of respect. 🇺🇸 4y
