The Degenerates
The Degenerates | J. Albert Mann
2 posts | 3 read | 4 to read
In the tradition of Girl, Interrupted, this fiery historical novel follows four young women in the early 20th century whose lives intersect when they are locked up by a world that took the poor, the disabled, the marginalizedand institutionalized them for life. The Massachusetts School for the Feeble-Minded is not a happy place. The young women who are already there certainly dont think so. Not Maxine, who is doing everything she can to protect her younger sister Rose in an institution where vicious attendants and bullying older girls treat them as the morons, imbeciles, and idiots the doctors have deemed them to be. Not Alice, either, who was left there when her brother couldnt bring himself to support a sister with a club foot. And not London, who has just been dragged there from the best foster situation shes ever had, thanks to one unexpected, life altering moment. Each girl is determined to change her fate, no matter what it takes.

Just finished my 170th book this evening (and Goodreads shows that in other places so not sure why it isn't updating). I definitely dont think the number of books you read in a year is the biggest indicator of reader success, but in a year of ups and downs I'm proud of how much I've read and all the amazing new books I've experienced and gotten to share about with others here.

Happy (almost) New Year Littens!

Pickpick

Four girls' lives intertwine at an institution for the "feebleminded." Sisters Maxine and Rose, their friend Alice, and London struggle to survive in an institution that considers them less-than. Horrifying & heartbreaking, but I thoroughly enjoyed the well-researched nature & the characters& their relationships.

TW: ableism, outdated/offensive "medical" terminology, miscarriage, institutionalization, homophobia, etc.
