Part memoir, nutritional primer, and political manifesto, this controversial examination exposes the destructive history of agriculturecausing the devastation of prairies and forests, driving countless species extinct, altering the climate, and destroying the topsoiland asserts that, in order to save the planet, food must come from within living communities. In order for this to happen, the argument champions eating locally and sustainably and encourages those with the resources to grow their own food. Further examining the question of what to eat from the perspective of both human and environmental health, the account goes beyond health choices and discusses potential moral issues from eatingor not eatinganimals. Through the deeply personal narrative of someone who practiced veganism for 20 years, this unique exploration also discusses alternatives to industrial farming, reveals the risks of a vegan diet, and explains why animals belong on ecologically sound farms.

I‘m so thankful for this author and the points she points out about our broken food system. And gives you a blunt, fact based argument as to why going to a vegetarian based diet is not only detrimental to your health, but truthfully more harmful to the environment than local farm systems. It‘s the plow, not the cow. Hahaha this book is thought provoking and should be a best seller. I‘m not sure why it isn‘t.

Nute Welcome to Litsy! It‘s a warm and friendly community. I know that you will enjoy yourself here. I‘m looking forward to getting to know you!🙂 5y

“The truth is that agriculture requires wholesale destruction of entire ecosystems. The truth is also that life isn‘t possible without death, that no matter what you eat, someone has to die to feed you.”

Really disappointed with this book. I was looking for a rational discussion about the negatives of vegetarianism. Instead I read a slightly hysterical, brow beating rant full of convoluted arguments. She makes some interesting points but the manic tone of the book put me off. Her arguments against a
vegan diet have some merit but if the book was argued a little more rationally I would have taken it more seriously

A vegetarian I once knew started eating meat again for the first time in 20 years after reading this book. I'm really interested to see what it is about this book that can change someone's way of life.
