This fictionalized account of the co-author's formative years as a poor indigenous girl in Ecuador who is sold by her family into servitude for a local Hispanic family is a tragic, eye-opening tale of how far determination can get one. Several times in the novel, the protagonist, Virginia, is given the chance to escape to freedom, but her “freedom“ is to go back to her people and grow potatoes the rest of her life. She makes a different choice.
Too engrossed in this fantastic read about a young Ecuadorian slave in the 80s overcome each burden with forgiveness and acceptance to become a successful entrepreneur. This is Maria Virginia Farinango's story and every person should read it. She writes about her honest feelings - being ashamed of being indigena, thinking about staying with those who beat her in order to learn.
Now to show attention to someone who doesn't like being ignored.

I didn't realize how few books I'd read that were set in South America. I had to pull this from my to-read list. This prompt will be helpful in diversifying my reading even further. #booktober #southamerica
