Enormous Changes at the Last Minute
Enormous Changes at the Last Minute: Stories | Grace Paley
7 posts | 5 read | 6 to read
In Enormous Changes at the Last Minute, originally published in 1974, Grace Paley "makes the novel as a form seem virtually redundant" (Angela Carter, London Review of Books). Her stories here capture "the itch of the city, love between parents and children" and "the cutting edge of combat" (Lis Harris, The New York Times Book Review). In this collection of seventeen stories, she creates a "solid and vital fictional world, cross-referenced and dense with life" (Walter Clemons, Newsweek).

The above quote by Grace Paley was found in the beginning of the book I'm going to attempt to read in the next couple of days - any guesses littens 🤔😺📖

JenReadsAlot Whatcha reading?? 4y
KLyn1 @JenReadsAlot - attempted to read Mrs. Everything before it was due back to the library - wasn't successful🤦🏼‍♀️ 4y

“On deep tracks, the tears rolled down her old cheeks . But she had smiled so peculiarly for seventy-seven years that they suddenly swerved wildly towards her ears and hung like glass from each lobe.”

What a great visual!! From the short story Faith in the Afternoon, in this collection by Grace Paley.

“$32 even and you‘ve owed it for eighteen years.”

This is for two books. I wonder how much I‘d owe if I did that today!

There‘s a Little Free Library in town near son‘s piano lessons, and from it, I scored this short story collection by Grace Paley. I did put a book in the LFL. I forgot to take The Luminaries with me to read tonight!

ETA: this is the beginning of the short story “Wants”.

ReadingVampire So when I got back home from the Navy, I went to my library. They told me I owed $67 for one book... I've owed it since I was 16 when I last went to the library. I'm now 30 lmaooooooo 🤯😱😱😱 6y
Bookwm85forever @ValerieAndBooks @Puredragonstar My daughter is Circulation Manager in our small library. Population of 10,000. As of December, the unpaid fees to the library totaled over $18,000. 6y
ValerieAndBooks @Puredragonstar 😱! Unless the book is rare/out of print, the library might be better off asking for how much it would cost to replace the book. 6y

ValerieAndBooks @Bookwm85forever $18,000 is a scary huge amount and possibly a lot of missing Books! ! Is that from the very beginning of the library, or just in the past few years? 6y
Bookwm85forever @ValerieAndBooks I honestly don‘t know if it‘s from many years past. I do know many fines are from missing dvds and lost or damaged material. Some patrons rack up fines then refuse to pay them. They later use another family member‘s cards and repeat the process. 6y
ValerieAndBooks @Bookwm85forever It‘s too bad when borrowing privileges are abused 😢. Bless your daughter‘s heart!! 6y

"The doctor said, "You can't bleed forever. Either you run out of blood or you stop. No one bleeds forever."
Continuing my goal of reading/re-reading books I own and letting them out into the wild.

I want to read more Paley. A lot more. Like, every story she ever published type of more. This used book is used in name only - it was in pristine condition for $5. Winning!

batsy Edward Hopper cover! Double winning, if that's possible! 7y

"So foolish is the true love when responded to."

Happy birthday, Grace Paley. You were a radical, wizardly woman.
